The number system children will use throughout their lives is based on a place-value system. Understanding the place value system is a foundation to all operations as children progress in mathematics education. This book introduces readers to the whole number place values, comparing, and ordering numbers using colorful, engaging images and simple text.
This book is my greatest recommendation for teaching non-traditional counting concepts to students. Math concepts made simple. It is filled with tons of activities covering skip counting, tens and ones placement, greater numbers, comparing ten less than or greater than a number, counting teens, etc. The activities are very simple and hands-on. I love that this book uses real photographs of children playing with leaves, ants, ducks and all sorts of beautiful creatures in nature to accomplish its task of teaching place value. The back of the book also has a glossary which defines digit, compare, skip count, and other words and terms, should a child have a question about what a they mean.
Place Value gives examples of lots of different ways that children can count and think about place values. It provides methods and strategies that are non-traditional. To teach literacy using this book, I would have the students write about what place value means to them. I think that it is important they students have a true understanding of place value and what that means for counting.
