Prepare for seduction as Lara Adrian unleashes a dark new breed of vampire

Part human, part otherworldly, the Breed has lived among humankind for thousands of years, maintaining a tentative peace built on secrecy, power, and the dark justice carried out by the formidable warriors of the Order.

But now, a blood war within the race is set to ignite. Vampires are going Rogue in startling numbers, feeding without discretion, killing humans in the streets. It is up to the Order to stop the spreading threat of Rogue domination -- and in so doing, each of the warriors will be forced to confront private demons, darkest secrets, deepest fears. Some will know triumph, some will know loss, but each warrior can count on one thing: Love, when it finds him, will often come at the worst possible moment, with the least likely woman . . . and it will bring each of these powerful males to his knees.

Long rant ahead, be warned. (I mean LONG)

I am not a fan of the Midnight Breed series. Not by a long shot. In fact, I loathe the series. I know I loathe it, because so far I've read the first seven books.

"But if you loathe it, then why the hell do you keep reading them?" you may ask.

I blame Kobo. They did their usual "Books recommended for you" email (what kind of books am I reading that they recommended this junk?) along with a 30% off coupon. Midnight Breed was recommended, and I got the 8 book set for $20. I thought I scored a great deal!

Until I read the first one.

I'm usually pretty forgiving on the first novel in any series. The author's working out the kinks, figuring out their writing style, etc. So okay, it was the typical brooding emo amazingly hot guy who couldn't die falling for the girl that seems to have a quirky ability.

I could even ignore that he kept referring to her as "female". However, I had a much harder time ignoring that he breaks into her apartment to screw her while she's asleep, and she doesn't seem to have a problem with this once she finds out.

And you thought Edward had Rape Face.

Also, when you can delete every sex scene and only have a dozen pages left, I'm thinking you're missing something vital in your book. Something called a "plot".

Until I got to the next book. And the next (why am I still reading these? Because I'm cheap and hate wasting money.)

By time I got to the fourth book, I figured out that I could skim over 30% or more because it was nearly copy and paste from the first three. I thought that at some point she'd try to throw a wrench in this ship so it would go towards something new, but come book seven I'm now rolling my eyes and yelling, "Oh come on!"

She might as well have named every male character the same and every female character the same.
Let me break it down for you.

EVERY SINGLE MALE LEAD:

Drop dead gorgeous (though you're lucky to get a discription that goes beyond "(colored) hair and (colored) eyes and amazing body" (It took three books before she explained Kade is Native. Up until that point going by her description of him...oh wait, there wasn't one, I just pictured a blank void fighting alongside the Order)

All have identical speech patterns and use the identical phrases at the copy and pasted moments throughout each book. By book 7 I did notice that she finally started to veer away from this, a little.

Super emo loathes himself, thinks that the woman, er sorry, "female" would be insane to love him even though he dotes on her/is drop dead georgous/crazy wealthy/adores her/can't die/can offer her eternale life/etc etc. You get the idea. Every. Last. One. Of. Them. "I need to leave her, she deserves someone better! I'm a horrible person! I should rocket into the sun and die!"

Can make her climax with two strokes of his finger in her "hot wet cleft". Yes, this is the description used of a vagoo in every single book. But trust me, it's better than the author's other favorite line, "Her canal milked his cock like a hot wet fist". Does anyone else pictured someone milking a cow with sweaty hands? Because I did. For all four books this was used. Or was it five?

Oh, I only know that two of the males have short hair. The rest seem to have hair that magically lengthens and shortens depending on the mood. In the above drawing, I'm just guessing that Rio's hair is long.

Every guy has no respect for women, unless they're a "Breedmate" in which case they feel obligated to protect the "superier female". Otherwise, women are just things they can drink and screw and then mindswipe and walk away like nothing happened. "I can't get her pregnant, so it's okay!" (Big cheesy grin and thumbs up)

EVERY SINGLE "FEMALE"

Gives up her dreams and her life to spend the rest of her life on her back under one of these guys. The successful photographer? Now only shoots photos for her guy. The vet who ran her own clinic to help people from poor circumstances? Is now their doctor. I guess sewing up the Breed is like sewing up a shih tzu. Everyone one of these women walk away from what they're aspiring towards.

All have identical speech patterns and use the identical phrases at the copy and pasted moments (Look! I can use copy and paste too!)

All have mind shattering orgasms at the drop of a hat, or two strokes of a finger. (Their pap tests must be awkward)

Her family is dead. (Did I mention this is every character?)

Her friends are either dead or end up dead.

Why? Because the author can't, or simply doesn't want to, try to come up with a realistic or, heaven forbid, sad way for her to leave her family to live her new happy eternal life.

As void a desciption as all the other characters. You get hair and eye color, that's it. I was 3/4 of the way through the book before Clair's "butter skin" made sense, because it was pointed out that her mom was white and her dad was black. Up until that point going by the lousy description (that was the same description used for Rio) I wondered if she was Italian or something along those lines.

Are in no way respected, but thought of as beautiful, until they are exposed as a Breedmate.

I'm going to pause for a second here. A "Breedmate" is born only one out of every million women (or so the author says). Yet they seem to be everywhere, and is the first woman any of these men seem to talk to, conveniently only a few months apart. Guys that went 900 years without finding a "mate" are dropping like flies in two years.

Also, these women are being taken in groups of twenty or more at a time by the "evil" guy - read, the guy she threw in to make some semblance of an actual plot - yet no one seems to notice they're vanishing. I'm guessing there's just a hoard of horny Breed walking around.

Oh wait, there isn't, because they take women when they want and drink from them then screw them then wipe their memories of it. Mass rape, yay! (The argument, "but after I gave her the roofie she was really into it!" could come into play every time these guys have sex).

I digress.

Don't get me started on how the women aren't allowed to leave the compounds during the day because it's "too dangerous". Oh wait, they can't leave at night, either.

So, to break it down:
Every last male is the same.
Every last woman is the same and gives up her career to be his sexy playmate.
Every book has copy and pasted lines/paragraphs/pages/chapters
Every book can now be skimmed over and you don't miss anything important. (There was something about an evil guy for a second, wasn't there? OH HEY SEX!"

Rant over. Sorry

Lara Adrian, I wish I knew how to quit you. I cannot wait for Hunter and Chase's stories.

Things I Learned While Reading These Books:
1. Apparently these vamps never wear underwear. They just go commando. (I'm not one to judge or complain. One less article of clothing to take off.)
2. Gen Ones (1st generation vamps) are very powerful but can't stand being exposed to the sun for a period of time. (Unlike the later generations who can withstand longer sun exposure. If need be.)
3. Breedmates are women who carry the gene with the ability to procreate with Breed males. (They can be identified by the teardrop falling into the bowl of a crescent moon.)
4. Once a Breed male mates with a Breedmate, it's for life (The exchange of blood keeps them linked and sustains a Breedmates youthfulness.)
5. The Big Bad (yes, I'm borrowing from Buffy) has been biding his time for a LONG time.
6. Rogues are vampires who have succumbed to Bloodlust. (They're the junkies of the vampire world.)
7. Rogues can be killed with titanium laced weaponry. (They sizzle, melt and turn into ash when cut by said weapon.)
8. Darkhavens are for sissies. (These are the sheltered, politically correct type of vamps.)
9. The Warrior class is bad ass. (That is all.)
10. Minions are humans who are controlled by a vampire. (Vamp sucks the consciousness out of the human and in return, the human does the vampires bidding. Good for day time activities.)
11. There are no Breed women. (As in, female vamps.)
12. The older the Warrior, the more dermaglyphs. (Dermaglyphs: naturally occurring marks inherited from the Breed's forebearers. Unique indication of lineage and social rank. Changes color to match the mood of the Warrior.)

Very good series. I found it hard to read Harvards book in the beginning but I'm glad a i stayed with it as it was very interesting towards the end. I just felt the beginning was slow and covering old ground that anyone who had read the rest of the series would have already known. Lara Adrian is a great writer with an amazing imagination. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series and have already pre ordered it.

As shown, this collection contains the first 8 books in this series. I took a chance after reading a review of this series and ordered the entire collection. I do not regret doing so, as after reading book 1 I was happy that I had them all and also made sure I preordered book 9.

In this twist to the vampire story, vampires are known as The Breed. They all descend from aliens that crash landed on earth more than a thousand years ago. These aliens follow the regular vampire story line in that the sun will kill them and they must drink blood from live humans to live. A difference in the storyline is that although the breed are living being, who because of their alien genes can live a long time, never get sick and can heal from injuries very fast but can also die if hurt bad enough. Also included in the storyline are human women that are identified by a certain birthmark. These women, called Breedmates, who because of something in their DNA can mate with breed members and have children (who are always male). They also can live a long time, heal fast and never get sick as long as they drink blood from a breed member.

The series revolves around a group of the breed who call themselves The Order. Their main job is to hunt down and kill members of the breed, called Rouges, who have given in to bloodlust and just start to kill with no regard to the possibility of discovery by normal humans. The normal breed member while he must drink blood from a living human to survive will usually pick up someone, drink, seal the bite and using their powers erase the bite from the memory of the person bitten, thus maintaining a balance between humans and breed. Of course there has to be someone who has decided that members of the breed should control the world with normal humans basically becoming nothing but a food source, with him (of course) ruling the breeds.

How he plans to do this and the books, (each book follows a different member of the order), show how the order found out about this and what happens as the order tries to stop him.

This series is similar in mythology to the Black Dagger Brotherhood, but less cheesy. Like BDB, it is more paranormal romance than urban fantasy, but there is enough adventure to hold my interest. (Well, to hold my interest when I am in the mood for a light and easy read).

Interestingly, in the final book 8 the mythology seems to start evolving a little. I am interested to see where Adrian is taking things in future books.

Midnight Breed has it all

I absolutely love this series. I have read these stories many times but I can not get enough of this amazing heroic, sexy world she has created. All but one heroine is as great as their male counterparts. I have to say that Claire Roth is one of the weakest female characters ever written. She has no balance for Reichen. But all the others pull you in and make you want more.

The 1st and 2nd book was okay, I gave it a 3 star but then i couldnt even start or finish the 3rd book. Anytime I saw it, i wasn't filled with excitement i was filled OMG WHY?, cause I started the series and I really really hate starting and not finishing a series so there are sometimes I approach a book with PROCEED WITH CAUTION sign. I feel pissed that I got bored with this when I already started it. So i wont be this reading anytime soon.🤢🤮

I liked it very much, the feeling of an actual team and showing the little things about the Order from Mira and the little dogs, the exchanges amongst the boys in the various areas of their expertise such as Gideon and his toys in the tech room. It's nice to see vampires BE vampires instead of all shiny and sparkling.

This a wonderful series with a brand new twist on the vampire mythology. I was hooked with the first book. The characters are richly described and hold your interest. I'm just hoping a TV series could be made from these novels because there is not only romance but a lot of action, intrigue, drama and comedy. I hope the series never ends.

I loved these books and couldn't wait to read the next one. Lara Adrian is a very very good writer. waiting on the next one. If you love vampires as I do. These are close to J R Ward's BDB books. Pretty good reading on a dark cold night.

Is a great mind-less vampire series. They are steamy, and addicting. And I really enjoy Lara Adrian's writing style. I like the paranormal romances to take me out of reality for a little while and this series does exactly that.
