From RDCB Volume 1 1980 ~ The year was 1916 after the failed Rising in Ireland against English rule. Nora Shannon left her homeland for New York City with Thomas Cassidy's baby in her womb after young Thomas was hanged for his part in the rebellion. Armed only with her culinary (specially French cuisine) skills from her service since she was 10 years old at the Wingfield's estate in Doonmara, she found a job as a cook in a strange household that advertised for a cook specializing in French cuisine. Shortly after her departure from Ireland's shores, Patrick Cassidy, fugitive from the noose and Thomas' brother disembarked into New York City's docks. How these two friends fared in their separate lives and how they dealt with whatever trials Fate saw fit to hurl at them is the heart~warming and engrossing tale that is the subject of this beautiful prose.

I loved this family saga about Irish immigrants who moved to America for a better life after losing family in a violent struggle against the British. I loved the Irish history, the history of America during the early 1900's coming full circle to WWII. It was a great story with interesting characters and was a look at the struggles immigrants had to make a new life in a new land.

Wonderful book about the lives of two Irish immigrants and their families, spanning from 1916-1940. Would America hold the promise they hoped for?
