DEVIL'S PROMISE intially was published in Dec, 2010 as a 40,000 story - the first of three - that was to continue the story started in DEVIL'S PACT. I read it when it first came out, was dissatisfied, and posted the 2 Star review below. It seems I was not the only unhappy reader because Siren soon removed the book from their website and eventually offered the whole 139,000 three-part story as DEVIL'S PROMISE - COMPLETE.

I read the COMPLETE story yesterday and my comments are as follows:

Probably the most controversial scene from the original non-COMPLETE version (in which a debutante that Devin Spawn considers like a "niece" throws herself at Devin resulting in some fingering below the belt that went on for pages and PAGES) has been edited. It's shorter by half and there is less fingering. I quickly went thru comparing the two versions and as far as I know, that part seems to be the only one heavily re-edited in the new complete version.

I am still not too impressed with the move of the characters from the Wild Wild West in DEVIL'S PACT to Boston high society and later, to Paris. I think Samantha Cruise's no holes barred no holds barred style and larger than life characters made more sense in a western setting. Trying to hide a menage relationship in stiff-laced Boston results in Caleb, the third in the menage, being thought gay by all since he shows no interest in other women. My favorite scene in the whole book is probably the confrontation between Megan and Caleb where Caleb points out how Megan has always chosen Devin over Caleb in their relationship. That and sex scenes (that doctor's exam? hawt!) have upped my rating to 3 Stars.

Where Devin and Megan (and The Cannon, natch!) were the protagonists of Devil's Pact, DEVIL'S PROMISE is more about Devin/Megan/Caleb's open marriage and how it eventually encompass Caleb's BFF Randolph and the object of Randolph's obsession - Cassie - into their open "family". I would say that Cassie is the heroine of the book for the last 2/3 of the story. Unfortunately, I couldnt get a grasp on her character as I wouldnt any heiress who tries to find out how alike she is to her depraved father by becoming a prostitute. Huh?

Content warnings: some fight scene violence, attempted rape, public sex, voyeurism, double penetration, double stuffing the same hole

Dear Santa,

I was so excited when I found this under my tree. After all, what can be a bigger present than "The Cannon"?!! It was just what I always wanted for Christmas, Santa.

Well, after a typically over-the-top Prologue in which Devin Spawn is thinking of mounting his wife. Megan, as she is giving birth:

He shut his eyes, pondering if anal sex was physically possible during delivery. He could be in one end and the baby pushing out the other.

Just then, Megan made a sound that told him sex of any kind was off-limits. At least for now, he reminded himself. “Consider yourself warned, soon as my boy pops out, I’m coming in.”

. . . . the story went nowhere from there.

Turned out that this 40,000 short story was more of a crossover. It soon became less about Devin, the Cannon, Megan, her other husband, Caleb, and more a set-up for future stories about a secret sex society called The Exchange. Yawn. I wouldnt exactly call the petering ending a cliffhanger but it was definitely one of those "To Be Continued" endings which annoyed me to no end. Even if the next story will be published next month.

Thanks for the bait-and-switch, Santa. Speaking of switches, next year, if I promise to be a really, really bad girl, may I have a good spanking story instead?

Love,

A continuation of the story begun in Book One in this series and I have to say that this story and the relationships in this novel really didn't go in the direction I expected. I was delighted that Megan, Devon and Caleb were able to find their way into a mutually satisfying relationship at the end of Book One. However, it comes to light that while Megan will always be first in Caleb's heart, he bears a deep hurt that having loved her nearly all his life she chose to marry Devon and take his name. Enter Dr. Sinclair and another beautiful lady to whom he is attracted, while being turned on by Megan as well. Then there is the overseas thing with the French connection of sorts and it seems that the entire situation gets very complicated. Lots of eroticism and sometimes I felt it was taking over. I'm not sure I liked that nearly so well. I wanted to see Devon, Megan and Caleb develop into a family and perhaps that will ultimately happen. HOpefully, if there is a sequel, that Caleb will find his way into a settled sense of belonging rather than feeling that he is an extra. I kind of hurt for him through this book. All that having been said, I thought that Devon as a character was fascinating--a rough and tumble guy who still really didn't find a way to be comfortable in society and fancy sitting rooms. Why was this family taken to a metropolitan setting? Their real genius was in the Western context. I have to own up to being disappointed to a degree, but there were things about this book that I liked.

This part two was a Hot Mess!! She made the Characters unlikeable. Unlovable! And Disgusting!! It was a Night and Day read. If I had read this one first, I would have never read the other one.
