About the author

Koji Seo (瀬尾 公治) is a Japanese manga creator from Shobara, Hiroshima, Japan.

He debuted in 1996 with the one-shot HALF & HALF in Magazine Fresh. His two hits, Suzuka and Cross Over, both mixed the genres of sports with high school romance. Suzuka focused on track and field while Cross Over used basketball.
He was an assistant to Tsukasa Ōshima, and respects Fujiko F. Fujio and Masahito Soda.
In 2009 he designed the High School Girl Kimchi for Hokubi Construction food company.

He has stated in an interview that he was a member of his high school's track and field team and that he loves to watch baseball both emphasized in his hit manga Suzuka.

I wish it would have been longer, but just like this one shot, seven days goes quickly. The artwork reminded me of Love Hina. I decides to look up the mangaka and found that the mangaka drew Suzaku (I think?). That explains it.

Everything was really simple. Nothing thought provoking. Very typical shojo.

The plot was really great, the whole story was something entirely different and new.
And its sad ending is priceless even though I wish if both of them could've just lived.

"live without regrets and you'll die happily" that's one thing I've truly loved about the story. The concept of living your life to its utmost so that when your time comes, you'll be ready to let go.

I decided to check this out because I'd started Kouji Seo's newest manga, Megami no Cafe Terrace, when it first began. My reasoning was incredibly simple: Shueisha's Manga Plus app allowed me to easily check out new additions to Weekly Shounen Jump, but I had no such luxury for rival magazine Weekly Shounen Magazine, and wanted to check out something from Kodansha's rag that didn't require bingeing hundreds of chapters to catch up; Megami no Cafe Terrace had just gotten its first chapter fan-translated a day or two before I decided to start reading it, so I decided to follow it week-by-week. The problem was that it seemed the main translation group, Black Cat Scanlations, had fallen behind a bit, or otherwise stopped uploading stuff to MangaDex for a while (in favor of their own website), which allowed me enough time to fall way behind myself. I binged through about thirty chapters between January 20th and 21st, and by that time I was in the mood to check out more Kouji Seo. Half&Half appeared to be extremely short, at only two volumes, so I planned to blaze through it at the end of the week (work stuff got in the way, and I was a chapter short of finishing Volume 1 on Friday).

I don't know if MnCF is truly indicative of Seo's style, nor can I tell if H&H is. I'm aware of some minor controversy around the author's works, I think involving a tendency to lapse into extreme melodrama(?) - I remember people anticipating some wack turns for MnCF when it first began. What I mostly "got" from MnCF is that Seo has an interest in fanservice, but for some reason found himself unable to pull it off a lot in his current manga, despite the setting allowing for a variety of hijinks, between the main boy living with five girls, and one of the girls being an amateur fashion-designer and creating costumes for the waitresses to wear (which would necessarily result in scenes of undressing to change clothes). Seo did indeed take advantage of such possibilities, but overall the manga felt more like a "slice-of-life" steadily developing into parallel romantic lines; there's still room for ass and titties, but these do not seem to be Seo's prime motivation. Regardless, dude is quite decent at drawing boobs and butts when he wants to. Such things were not the reason I was reading the manga, and indeed were secondary to my interest in the character-development threads, but I was still curious how Seo might handle more ribald ecchi.

Getting to the subject of Half&Half itself: I'm somewhat ashamed to learn I've lapsed into illiteracy - from the description on MangaDex, I was expecting the dual protagonists to share a body, and I guess swap between male and female forms or something. Turns out they're just linked by an invisible tether, like certain co-op video games. The premise is that Yuuki falls from the roof of a school building, hitting Shinichi on the head, and both die simultaneously, only to be resurrected by a magical force linking their lives and feelings together, challenging them to decide who of the two should die after the end of one week. The premise reads like something of a "death game" in the vein of e.g. The World Ends With You or Devil Survivor games, but the manga is more a romantic/coming-of-age drama. Neither person can move too far away from the other, as doing so causes an intense jolt of pain to afflict both people. Each person feels the pain and pleasure of the other, so any attempt to murder would end in both dying. The manga thus focuses on the two youths trying to live through their curse, but it doesn't quite bother with conversations on who should die. In the beginning, it is assumed (and stated by Yuuki herself) that Yuuki was attempting suicide by jumping off the roof, so Shinichi believes the cleanest solution would be to have her give up her life, as she'd allegedly already done. Yuuki claims a newfound appreciation of life, having survived her apparent suicide, but later events in this volume show that the circumstances of her fall were quite different than they seemed in the beginning. The volume ends in a bit of closure for Yuuki, and a deepened bond between her and Shinichi, but no real steps to a resolution of their problem.

While I am interested to see how the youths reach a conclusion, I kind of just assume they'll somehow work it out so both survive, so I'm not terribly invested in the mystery so much as I am... almost everything else. I guess a great deal of my interest concerns the potential romance budding between Yuuki and Shinichi, which I suppose would be tied to the choice they must make anyway. But, to tie back to an earlier paragraph here, I'm also strongly invested in the "suggestive" content. The manga ran in Kodansha's monthly Bessatsu Shounen Magazine, with which I'm not too familiar beyond Shingeki no Kyojin and a couple Shuzo Oshimi titles. I suppose it could be said these works are a bit more "mature" than the standard Weekly Shounen Magazine (indeed, Kodansha USA have published some of Oshimi's Happiness volumes with a "Mature" rating), while still aiming for a demographic of teenage boys. Half&Half seems to be about the same level as Shounen Jump's I"s, as something I would not have enjoyed at the age of twelve, but may have appreciated more at fourteen. For the most part, I mean this because of the naked boobs, simple as. I'm pushing thirty now, but I'm still occasionally surprised by some elements of manga, not expecting certain developments to happen in manga that seem geared toward wider audiences. Basically, I'm saying I was a little shocked that the first chapter here ended with Shinichi masturbating in the bathroom after seeing a sleeping Yuuki's fat boobs, and she woke up mid-orgasm, discovering her feelings are linked to Shinichi's and necessarily will feel what Shinichi will feel when he cums. Chapter 2 thus begins with Yuuki making a sign prohibiting masturbation. Later on, she suffers something similar when a backed-up Shinichi nocturnally emits. Off the top of my head, I cannot recall reading any shounen manga with so brazen a reference to jacking off and/or cumming, so that was quite funny. We also see the main characters walk into a room where two secondary characters are mid-coitus, with the girl's tits out, which I didn't know was allowed in shounen manga at all, considering the only manga I've read with on-panel sex have been seinen or outright H. This doesn't necessarily mean Half&Half is "good" because it has nipples, sex, and references to jizz, so much as there's just a relative "novelty" here that ends up impressing me somewhat. I'm used to pretty extreme fanservice, e.g. in To Love-Ru Darkness, but at the end of the day much of the content there is technically quite "chaste," which I guess is why/how this manga stands apart. Or maybe it's a difference in standards between Shueisha and Kodansha, and maybe Kodansha's WSM allows lewder content than Shueisha's WSJ, so Kodansha's BSM is maybe less "special" than I imagine? I don't fuckin' know (lol).

✍ LA PETITE INFORMATION ✍

Il y a maintenant 25 ans, un one-shot de cette histoire a été écrite, le manga se nommait aussi Half & Half et avait gagné le 55e  prix du meilleur premier Shōnen de Shōnen Magazine. Il l'a écrit plusieurs fois et a fini par le publier. Ces deux tomes sont un remake avec plus de détails, d'autres graphismes et des similitudes. Certaines choses changent et sont précisées  lors de la lecture. Par exemple, dans l'ancienne version la fille s'appelait Tyrrell, survit à la chute et  réanime le jeune homme  par un baiser, etc. Je n'en dirais pas plus, car cela spoilerais l'histoire.

Cette version actuelle a été publiée le 1er juillet 2020 officiellement chez Pika Édition, auteur à succès de love comedy romantiques, Kouji Seo nous offre ici un remake de son premier manga publié chez Kodansha qui lui a valu le prix du meilleur premier Shōnen du Shōnen Magazine.
La série manga Half & Half, a été pré publiée d’octobre 2012 à juin 2015 dans le Pocket Weekly Shônen Magazine de Kodansha, et compte 2 tomes.

~Le manga est centré principalement sur nos deux protagonistes suivant ;

~Yûki Sanada qui est une étudiante assez mystérieuse, on se sait rien de sa vie ou de son passé durant le tome 1. Dans l'ancienne version, elle se nommait Tyrrell et c'étais une extraterrestre hors dans cette version, elle est humaine.

~Shinichi Nakagawa qui est un étudiant assez banal, qui rêve de devenir dessinateur, mais il n'y a que sa grand-mère qui croit en lui, car son père veut qu'il travaille dans son entreprise.

~L'apparence et le nom de nos protagonistes ont changés dans cette version. Shinichi s'appelait Takashi Kinoshiro.

~Dans ce tome, nous n'avons rien de concret jusqu'à la dernière page concernant cette voix mystérieuse, nous ne savons pas pourquoi cela arrive t'il, mais nous en avons un peu plus sur nos deux protagonistes.

~Ce premier tome est surtout centré sur qui des deux va mourir et leurs querelles ainsi qu'une partie de la vie de Shinichi.

~C'est un manga assez romantique et érotique. Dans le tome 1, nous avons la pointe de fantastique avec la voix et le monde entre la vie et la mort, mais ils seront de nouveau sur terre et pourront interagir en tant que vivant. L'ancienne version était soft. Les graphismes sont explicites. Les scènes sensuelles deviennent érotiques et explicites ainsi que les graphismes qui sont assez osés et détaillés.

~J'ai moins apprécié les "Ben", "Eh ben" constant lors des dialogues, assez répétitif. L'œuvre est assez poétique dans le sens où ils n'ont rien en commun, ne se connaissent ni d'Adam ni d'Eve. Mis à part le fait qu'ils sont dans la même université.

~Shinichi va mourir par la faute de Yûki qui tombe du toit de l'université alors qu'il se baladait. Ils se retrouveront dans un entre-monde et ne seront ni mort ni vivant et après ils seront à nouveau dans leur monde a eux. Au début le garçon se dit que c'est elle qui doit mourir vu qu'elle s'est suicidée, mais Yûki ne lâchera pas l'affaire et changera d'avis et voudra vivre. Ensuite s'enchaînera une cohabitation assez compliquée à cause des conditions posées par l'entité mystérieuse, ils devront savoir discuter calmement pour savoir qui des deux restera en vie à la fin du délai écoulé mais cela deviendra dur car des sentiments naîtront. Ils apprendront à se connaître, mais nous en saurons très peu sur la jeune femme.

~L'histoire est intéressante et je ne m'attendais pas à ça. Car des questions se posent et Yûki ne veut pas souhaiter sa mort. Mais qui mérite le plus de vivre? Tel est la question que chacun se pose. C'est un manga qui nous fait réfléchir. Et nous en saurons plus sur la mort de Yûki également. Il y une vraie questions sur les questions que se posent les jeunes sur l'avenir.

~ Par contre, le fan service est beaucoup présent. Mais j'aime beaucoup le coup de crayon du mangaka.

~Ils devront tout partager, que ce soit les sensations, émotions ou douleurs. Donc que ça soit physique ou psychique, ils ne font qu'un, ce qui est assez poétique.
Ils seront connectés et mourront s'ils essayent de se tuer avant le délai.
Les personnages sont attachants et l'on ressent leurs émotions. Le manga parle également de sujet compliqués comme l'abandon des parents ou l'orientation de notre parcours que nos parents choisissent pour nous et d'Alzheimer. Des sujets aussi dénoncé au sein de l'université.

~Des révélations et des mystères laisseront place aux doutes. Dans cette version Yûki et Shinichi reviennent à la vie par cette voix mystérieuse qu'ils prennent pour un "dieu". L'auteur nous montre les comparaisons de l'ancienne et de la nouvelle version à chaque fin de chapitres.

~Alors que dans l'ancienne version, seul Takashi avait perdu la vie et c'est Tyrrell qui lui permettait de revenir a la vie en partageant la moitié de son âme.

~J'ai bien aimé l'histoire en global, même si pour finir, nous ne savons quasiment rien sur la voix ou l'entité qui leur a permis cette chance ni Yûki, mais l'auteur à préciser vouloir garder le mystère jusqu'à la fin. Il ne savait pas quelle fin il allait faire jusqu'au dernier moment.

~Concernant les personnages secondaires, j'ai été assez en colère contre eux, car il y a pas mal de trahison et dans l'ancienne version il y avait beaucoup plus d'amour et une histoire moins tragique.

J'espère que mon avis vous aidera, c'est un bon moment à passer je trouve en compagnie des deux héros auxquels nous nous attachons.

مانگایی بود که داستان جدیدی داشت و وضعیت این روز های مردم جهان رو نشون میداد و به موضوعاتی مثل دوستی های فیک و خیانت می پرداخت که وقتی میخوندمشون واقعا عصبی میشدم ولی در دنیای واقعی هم متاسفانه همین وضع هست و این مانگا یک جورایی اعتراضی به این موضوعات بود.....
آرت خوبی داشت و بیشتر ژانرش رو میتونیم به زندگی روزمره اختصاص بدیم و داستانش هم خیلی به دل من نشست و مانگایی نیست که شما بخونید و بخندید؛ جاهای خنده دار داره ولی بیشتر غمگین هست....
راستش دلیل خاصی نداشت که بهش نمره چهار دادم ولی حس کردم که این نمره براش مناسب تره....

This was a bitter-sweet read. I loved how the story developed and progressed, how the love between main characters slowly bloomed. However, although I knew what I was getting into when I picked this one up, I still cried at the end. I usually don't like stories that end up in heartbreak, but this one was an exception. Recommended.

Story :
A boy and a girl die accidentally. However, a voice tells them that they will prolong their life by seven days, they will share physical feelings and emotions and shouldn't leave each other. After seven days, both of them will have to choose who will die because only one is allowed to live on.

Interesting premise with a good twist at the end and a somewhat acceptable development. Rushed that at times the interactions didn't feel realistic. Good for passing some time.

Je remercie les Éditions Pika pour cette lecture. Après avoir lu le résumé de ce manga, j’avais vraiment hâte de découvrir ce qui pouvait bien se cacher dans cette histoire.

Shinichi est un lycéen comme un autre. Un jour, alors qu’il se balade en pleine rue, il voit une fille tombée d’en haut. Elle lui atterrit dessus et… Elle le tue sur le coup. Les deux sont morts. Pourtant, ils se réveillent ensemble dans un endroit étrange.

Une voix leur apprend qu’ils sont dans un entre-deux. Ils ne sont ni morts, ni vivant. Ils vont avoir sept jours pour décider qui des deux va devoir vivre. Condition : ils n’ont pas le droit de s’éloigner, dès qu’ils le font il souffre et cela pourrait les tuer. De plus, toutes les émotions, qu’elle soit physique ou psychique sont ressentis par l’autre. Ils ont chacun leur corps, mais c’est comme s’ils ne faisaient qu’un.

L’histoire est vraiment intéressante. Entre une fille qui se suicide et un garçon qui n’a rien demandé, on pourrait penser au début que le choix est vite fait. Pourtant, ce n’est pas si simple. Yuuki ne veut plus mourir, elle souhaite continuer à vivre. Mais dans ce cas, comment décidé de qui mérite-le plus de vivre ?

Il y a une profondeur dans ce manga qui m’a beaucoup touché. Premièrement, on apprend progressivement à découvrir les deux personnages. Deuxièmement, il met en avant une question morale intéressante : en se basant seulement sur la vie de chaque personne, peut ont vraiment décidé qui mérite le plus de vivre ? La personne qui souffre le plus des deux, qui a la vie la plus merdique des deux, méritent-elles vraiment d’être choisi pour mourir ? Ou au contraire, ne devrait-elle pas vivre, pour apprendre qu’elle peut être heureuse aussi ?

En bref, c’est un manga intéressant, qui pour ma part, m’a beaucoup fait réfléchir. En dehors de l’histoire qui est prenante et intéressante, on se retrouve avec un manga très profond. Il nous fait réfléchir, on se prend au jeu et on finit aussi par se demander lequel des deux devrait vivre ou non. Je m’en vais de suite lire le deuxième et dernier tome pour découvrir le dénouement de cette histoire.

Au fur est à mesure du manga on découvre le passé des personnages et on nous montre qui mérite de vivre et qui ne mérite pas (si on peut vraiment dire ça)

Bonne idée de la part de pika d'avoir proposé 2 volumes en même temps car le premier volume est surtout de la mise en place pour découvrir qui ils sont.
Ce qui est intéressant dans le scénario c'est que les personnages partage tout; émotion etc.. ils ne peuvent pas etre loin l'un de l'autre.
Ce qui évite de tenter de s'entre tuer.

Bref j'ai adoré la série. Certes les premières pages sont un peu longues mais cest normal dans le scénario. 2 volumes c'est parfait vu qu'on suit 7 jours. Par contre le manga est pour le public 12+ mais attention scène de nudité très peu servent vraiment à la série c'est plus pour le plaisir des yeux.

This was a very short manga but I really like it, I know that there is a new edition to be honest the new one is quite better. The ending in this manga was very lame, the thing I hate the most was that there wasn't a really goodbye but the story is good.

След като прочетох кратката версия, се заех и с по-голямата като обем манга. Очаквах голяма доза от романтиката от предната черново да е запазена и тук, и останах разочарована. Имаше забавни моменти, но настроението е коренно различно - мрачно, почти зловещо и изпълнено с плътските помисли на Шинчи.
