Erich Wolf Segal was an American author, screenwriter, and educator. He was best-known for writing the novel Love Story, a bestseller, and writing the motion picture of the same name, which was a major hit.
Contrary to popular opinion here, I thought this was quite beautiful. This was yet another tribute to Oliver's and Jenni's epic Love story, is what I felt. In a twisted way, I liked the fact that Oliver wasn't able to move on. I mean, I do understand why it's important for his present day relationship with Marcie or any future possibilities and it's what's healthy for Oliver too, but it felt good to know that some love stories are forever, if only on paper!
Sometimes I ask myself what I would be if Jenny were alive. And then I answer: I would also be alive
Oliver, whose true love Jenny died in Love Story, goes through the motions here. But since True Love can only come once in one's life and one must be permanently scarred when it's lost, he will be miserable forever. The end.
Some people will disagree with me, but I thought there never should have been a sequel to LOVE STORY. That novel was a perfect entity unto itself. Sure there were unanswered questions, but that was part of its charm. OLIVER'S STORY in my opinion does a disservice to the overly romantic Love Story.
Some time has passed since the reader has last heard from Oliver. His life has moved on, sort of. He still dreams about his late wife, who wouldn't? Right? But when Oliver does meet a woman, and does have a torrid love affair, which I felt was mainly filler for a weak story line, ghosts of his past continuously haunt him. And then: .
Weak, I say, weak. Read this if you are curious enough to know what happened to Oliver after the conclusion of LOVE STORY. If you're not that curious not to worry -- you're not missing much. Three stars for effort.
Though I was apprehensive about "Oliver's Story" because of its really low rating on Goodreads, I was inquisitive to find out how Erich Segal furthered Oliver's life after such a big tragedy at such a young age. Now that I'm done with the sequel, I honestly regret taking it up.
As most people may not have read the sequel, I won't reveal much of the plot except that it is exactly what you would guess it to be: Oliver struggling to regain his happiness after the loss of the love of his life. There are girls, there is a therapist, there is family, there are friends... All predictable so far. The crucial difference being that while opposites were attracted to each other in the first, the second book couple seems to have more points in common. Both hurt by past relationships. Both rich but independent of families, both successful, both desperate for love. Does this relationship work out? Well, read OS if you are really an Oliver fan.
Where the sequel fails miserably is in Segal's story development. The humour is natural in LS but artificial in OS. The repartee between Oliver and Jenny in LS seemed so instinctive and organic, like actual fun verbal sparring between lovers who are opposites in nature. But in OS, it seems like Erich Segal was so forcefully trying to recreate the same adroit conversation between couples that a part of his desperation creeps in the book and messes it up. Oliver just sounds whiny and idiotic. His decisions don't make any sense (which you might excuse because of his supposedly broken heart but which is not at all convincingly written).
OS is about a 100 pages longer than LS, and this further kills the charm. It just feels tedious and long-winded. I skipped through quite a few paras of the book because they were too boring and irrelevant.
The only saving grace in the book is a character returning from the first one: Jenny's father Phil. An already beloved character in the first, OS makes you fall further in love with him.
A reader friend had praised the last lines of this book as really beautiful. I agree. I can't reveal those lines here as that would be a huge spoiler. But they are the only truly beautiful lines in an otherwise totally mediocre book.
Recommended only for serious fans of Love Story.

Let me start by saying I did like Love Story. So you really can’t hold this against me.
I hated this book. HATED it. And I very rarely hate a book. Sure, some books fail to live up to my expectations, some are just disappointing after being hyped up and receiving rave reviews, and some just aren’t my kind of books. With Oliver’s Story, the problem was this : it was plain terrible.
I’m reviewing this book a week after reading it in the hope that some of the anger would have subsided. I can’t say that it’s worked, but at least I’m not employing every swear word I know.
The Negatives:
1. Oh, where to start? If there was a list of things so cheesy you could make ten cheese burgers with it, this book would make it on that list. At the very top.
2. Take Oliver himself. He’s whiny, annoying, and he stalks the first female he decides to let in after Jenny died. Because he thinks she’s keeping secrets from him. The hell? They’ve gone out ONCE. And he thinks he’s entitled to know everything about her? Please.
3. Listen to this:
“For some unfathomable reason, Oliver, I like you. But you are impossibly impulsive“
“You’re not too possible yourself,” I answered.
I’m sorry, what? What does that even mean?! “You’re not too possible yourself”?! Erich Segal, have you completely lost it?!
4. I can’t handle so many stuck-up snobs. I just can’t. I don’t care if that’s how all corporate heiresses and people born into truckloads of money act (and somehow I doubt they’re thaaaat pretentious), but all the conversations about money in this book made me nauseous.
5. There’s this bit towards the end of the book where they visit Tokyo. And I swear, it feels like he’s looked up the place and Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V-ed everything he could find. Or he actually visited Tokyo and somebody gave him a dreadful brochure. I don't care, I don't owe him the courtesy of making him excuses.
I liked Jenny. I did. If this was actually a book about him coping with Jenny’s death, it might have been better. I’ve never cared about Oliver much, and I doubt I’d ever be able to read Love Story again because of this.
The Positives
None. Oh, wait. At least I’m one book closer to my year’s goal. I suppose that counts.
Final verdict: Dreadful. Absolutely dreadful. I've never read anything this cliched or cheesy. Ever. If you see this on a shelf in a bookstore and think, "Hmm. Maybe I'll just pick it up to see how Oliver's doing," DON'T. PUT IT BACK. TRUST ME ON THIS.
Love Story took me by surprise. I didn't know it would end just LIKE THAT!!! But then, I was actually satisfied with that ending and I found the book so amazingly perfect. And then, this book came out. I wasn't aware that there would be a sequel to Love Story. And since I loved Love Story, no one could stop me from reading this one, even if I know that Jenny wouldn't be in it.
***Contains a FEW SPOILERS from this point onwards. And so I read. I wasn't sure what to expect, just that Oliver's still here, grieving. I was totally into Jenny and Oliver's love story that I couldn't let it go. But then I have to 'cause Jenny's dead. And frankly, I wouldn't want Oliver to be alone, feeling utter loneliness. So when Marcie Binnendale came along, I was filled with mixed emotions. First, I don't want to betray Jenny by wishing another woman for Oliver. But then, Oliver's such a good guy inside and out, he deserves a good life; a better life than just sulking around, alone and drowning himself with workloads. So in some ways, I was happy for Oliver. With his new life with Marcie, I thought he could live again; fall in love once more; be with someone else and have a happy and satisfying family. I thought the future was bright for them. I thought.. I thought... Well, I thought wrong. It turns out, Jenny was, is and forever will be Oliver's only one true love. But then again, I couldn't think of anyone else who could make Oliver live again the way only Jenny did.
Every time I think of this book, I can't help but wish Love Story and Oliver's Story didn't end like that. Yet, it was both bitter and true..
And I would like to add that one reason I love this book is it keeps teaching me lessons in life that I may not appreciate and understand fully yet, I know there'll come a time wherein I'll see through it with different eyes. Although there is one thing that really struck me with this book. It is that Life goes on.>
See how personally and emotionally engrossed I am with the book? :))
"In our family, tradition is a substitute for love."
Sequel to the critically acclaimed Love Story, Oliver's Story is set two years after the heartbreaking events of the first book. It has been two years since Jenny passed away but Oliver hasn't been able to move on. With Phil as his only constant from those days, which feels to him more like a different life, there is not much he looks forward to. His friends, including Phil, try to set him up on dates but none of that works out. None, until of course, Oliver meets Marcie Nash.
Marcie Nash is a mystery, and quite literally a liar. She has told him things about herself that are just not true. And when he tries to get deeper into her lies, all the two are able to do is shut each other out. If I'm being frank here, their love story was more annoying than likable. Marcie never truly gave Oliver a chance to be his own self. Their brief period of courting is horrifying as she blames him for not getting back in touch with her when in reality, she never even gave him her full name, let alone her phone number or address.
Yet, Oliver is ready to overlook all of that because somehow he is in love once again. It is annoying, not because of the sweet story he shared with Jenny but because of how this feels rather forced to be true.
Contrary to popular opinion, I feel like the ending was rather magical. A lot of my friends who had read the book said that they had expected more from the ending but I believe it was just perfect. Oliver is a simple guy. He fell in love, not because of the riches but because of the simplicity of people. Little things in life are more important to him than money. So naturally, he chose Jenny over any of the other women in his life. And naturally then, he couldn't love Marcie when she was the epitome of all the reasons why he hated his rich ancestors. No, he couldn't.
Besides, I felt for him in this one. He was a heartbroken man who knew what mattered to him. Their story was doomed from the story, and it was kind of exasperating to go through the entire book only to read what I already knew would have happened.
*angkat topi*
As Cher said: "Do you believe in life after love?" Oliver believes in existing, but he's not living anymore without Jenny. Will he be able to love again? Will he be able to overcome the grieve of losing his true love?
"True love comes quietly, without banners or flashing lights. If you hear bells, get your ears checked.”- Erich Segal, Love Story. Yes Love Story ended off with Jenny's death leaving Oliver miserable and lonely for the rest of his life.
In Love Story, we saw how perfectly Oliver and Jennifer fell in love with each other, and even more perfect when they started living together. But not for very long, Oliver's soul mate, Jenny was taken away from him. This book was in very possible way amazing and way too emotional, this book makes Jenny & Oliver hard to forget, they are etched in our hearts forever.
But in Oliver's Story, there is no love story. It's a book telling us that what has become of Oliver, how's he's coping up with his only soul mate's death. Then comes Jenny's dad, who thinks Oliver is miserable and lonely and advises him to date women. But here we can see a change in Oliver's character, he has become more and more impulsive and annoying. He judges every women with Jenny. Then enters Marcie Binnendale in his life, since he didn't know a thing about her, he starts stalking her. Anyways, he found out that she is the heir of the Binnendale chain of department stores. They started dating, but I'm sue you won't feel a thing, as you felt while reading about Oliver and Jenny's date. Then one day Marcie takes Oliver to China to her chain's manufacturing office. Then suddenly Oliver takes out his anger on Marcie, the reason being the use of cheap labor, that's all, the end of their cute romantic relationship! Think just because of cheap labor, their relationship ended. Anyways this proves that love can happen only once and Oliver never stopped loving Jenny.
This book might not draw a mark in the reader's minds. “Sometimes I ask myself what would I be if Jenny were alive. And then I answer : I would also be alive." - Oliver.” Yes it's true, Oliver's too is dead, this book was just to show us that Oliver can never live a second life with any other women. So it justifies his love for Jenny.
But this after-life of Oliver's story was way too moving and emotional. Readers will feel his plight just after reading two pages only. It's not that bad, now if you've read Love Story, then definitely you should read this one.
Ciao readers.
"sometimes I ask myself what I would be if Jenny were alive. And I answer: I would be alive."
I wasn't planning to rate this book!
I think I should not have read this one, because it honestly destroyed the image I had of Oliver. Was thinking of leaving it off midway, but good I did struggle through because the last line did earn the book it's undeserved 2*!!
I may sound harsh, but it was just not to my liking!
Tip to future readers: Refrain from perusing this and be content with"Love Story"!
Novel lanjutan "Love Story" ini menceritakan kisah Oliver. Skrg dirinya mjd pasien seorang psikiater.
This book is not my cup of 🍵
I've been putting off this book for awhile now. Just because I'd love Jenny and Oliver so much from the first book, and I believed they've had this one great true love, that, reading a journey to love again for Oliver after that, feels like too much of a betrayal to Jenny. However I just needed to read it. See my dilemma? You want to read a book, but you're just to afraid to read it. You know what I mean? And so now, after having read the book, here I am, just contemplating everything. It's 1 am and I'm just babbling about it. I could probably write a 300 page essay about it!
So I started reading, and it was like walking on Oliver's shoes. I felt everything, his grief, his anger, his hope, his loneliness, everything, and I've never felt like that to any other character before. Sometimes I get confused as to why certain characters to the things they do. But with Oliver, I was with him the entire time. When he recounted memories of Jenny I drowned in his longing because I was longing too. This is a testament to how much I fell in love with Love Story, because it stayed with me all through out this book. I'm great believer that in life you only find ONE and true love, that would stay with you throughout eternity and the loves that come before or after that, just doesn't even compare. I think this is why the author wrote this sequel. The epic love Jenny and Oliver had, I knew for certain, and then at the end it didn't disappoint. And now for some reason makes me want to break my heart again, by reading the story they had in Love Story. It's crazy how books as inanimate as they are, evokes such emotions out from you.
Oliver’s story was a nice book, however I felt it to be more slow and on the dull side.
The whole thing consisted of Oliver trying to move on from Jenny’s death and eventually as we see he almost succeeds at finding someone in his life (Marcie). After that everything was slow. As they both tried to work their relationship out knowing that both of them are full time workers, and always busy.
I thought everything was sailing smoothly but things take a sharp turn. As Oliver leaves Marcie after a horrific revelation regarding her work.
And I admire Oliver for that, he didn’t accept child labor & even though Marcie didn’t care, he did and decided to chose to leave her over this. Even though he was in love with her.
Marcie ended up getting married in the end to another guy. And Oliver moved back to his parents life. Took over his rights and settled down there. With no love interest in sight so far.
So I guess for now Oliver is content of the celibate life he is leading.
Good on y’a olive and wise call ~

I inevitably had to read the sequel to Love Story after I wiped up the last snot bubble from reading the first book. It's two years later and Oliver has met someone else. And she's another WASP this time. Hooray! But this isn't a callow attempt to write a belated fairy tale ending for Oliver, and I admire Segal for making that choice. I'll just leave it at that.
I never saw the movie version of this. Why do I feel like my streaming video plans for this evening were just decided?
30 seconds later.....
Available from Amazon for $2.99, after I corrected my iPad search results. Damnit Siri, I said "Oliver's Story," not "Oliver's Storage." ("Now serving Bridge Creek!")
This was an excellent sequel to Love Story. Oliver is now on his own & must find meaning to his life without his great love, Jenny. It's well done, especially his relationship with his father. It especially meant a lot to me, having raised a couple of boys myself. It's amazing how my intelligence & worth have varied in their eyes as they've grown.
Love Story is the quintessential tragic romance. Not all of it has stood the test of time, and I definitely felt icky at times from a feminist perspective. But I was interested in whatever happened to Oliver. Oliver is an ass IMO and is so for much of this book. But in his grief and trying to heal, he does find redemption. Not only does he do the right thing, but he sees his father in a different light and makes peace with his family history and loses much of what I never liked about him.
This is almost an adequate follow-up to Love Story, but not quite. The main character is clever to the point of obnoxiousness, and his reluctant romance is just annoying all the way through. It’s almost the same Oliver as in Love Story, but a shallower and less interesting guy this time.
Things I liked about this book: ( Can’t say I liked any thing so I am just giving my views )
I wanted to like this book , I really did . I had absolutely loved Love Story ( ya,ya I know , the tear jerking romantic story ) I knew this book couldn’t be as phenomenal as Love Story. Some books have that kind of impact but I had definitely expected something atleast close to the first book.I was throughly disappointed.
The book fell short on reasoning and realism. As a reader I just couldn’t identify with Oliver’s decisions. He was too much in love with his first wife Jenny , granted .But he doesn’t want to take a step forward in to a new life. He doesn’t realise that not every person is alike and not every girl is Jenny. Oliver just couldn’t handle the fact that Marcie has different prioroties in life. All he does is try to find her in Marcie. I would have left the book within a few pages , had it not been for the curiosity of knowing what happens to Oliver eventually. Wrong decision Shona. Should have left the book at the time I thought I had enough of over the board romance and cheesy emotions :) Take my advice , go read Love Story and forget that the book has any sequel . Ok?
On my rating scale : 2 out of 5 ( I would have said 1 but Erich Segal is one of my fav authors)
"Discovering the courage to love again..." . 😯 . . ⭐ 3.7/5
I actually like this book better than Love Story: there's more exploration on Oliver's feelings and more depth in the writing overall, unlike in Love Story where the tone was more clipped.
And I feel for Oliver: his grief, the subconscious way it's affecting his life, the loneliness he feels. But I also love that the version of him now clearly shows how much Jenny changed him - for one, mending ties with his father, and the other, the moral question about labor and equality.
As for his relationship with Marcie, I do see that it really wasn't genuine love. It was driven by loneliness and grief, and somehow, I can also see from the get-go that there is no way for that relationship to work out. It wasn't just about Oliver's grief; Marcie and her wealth and her workaholism and her values and everything else had a lot more weight on it.
As for the ending, I guess it was already foreshadowed at the very beginning: "I had it once. And who the hell am I to hope that God will give me two of what people never get at all."
And I felt that.
Every kind of love that comes to our lives is never the same, but there's a kind of love that's literally once in a lifetime and can never be replaced - and Oliver had it with Jenny.
I wonder why Segal wrote a sequel to Love Story since the first book was just perfect by itself. Having said that comparing this with Love Story would not be right since this book is not a love story. While it is romantic in a way, I do not think it is about love. While Oliver's Story was annoying to a great extent, I kind of understood his journey of trying to overcome his grief and loss and finding acceptance.
PS: I DID NOT see that end coming! Still trying to make up my end if I liked the book or not.
I am only finishing this book because I try to finish every book I start but this book stinks! How can an author write a book like Love Story and follow it up with this stinker?
Oliver Barrett is self-absorbed, angry, condescending and a total ass. The way he is written, I have zero sympathy for him. He is not a likeable character. I wanted to like this book but I was actually rooting against his finding happiness!
The characters in the sequel to "love story" are deeper, darker and more interesting. Also because it's mostly a book about loneliness, it won't make you feel so good in the end. For all those reasons and others, I liked it. oh, and it took two days to read - that's also an advantage in comparison to LS which took only about 2 hours.
