Written as part of Kris 'n' Good Books' 'choose your own m/m story' challenge. This is now hosted by Goodreads' M/M Romance Group.
The story prompts for the author were: 1. part of the setting - a toy *waggles eyebrows* workshop 2. some background to one of the main protags - one of them is completely oblivious to attempts to get him under the mistletoe 3. another character/s - a weekend motorcycle club whose bikes are all named after Santa's reindeers 4. a conflict - *deep breath* finally engaged to the so-called woman of his dreams, one of the main protags finds himself left holding the baby after he discovers he was drugged and seduced by a former colleague at last year's Christmas office party *gasp* who was determined to have a child before her biological clock ran out but tragically died only months later leaving her gorgeous younger, gay brother and the main protag as joint guardians of the child... as long as they live together... *panting* 5. an object/phrase to be mentioned in the story somewhere - the last line of the story has to be 'And that's how you put the 'ho' in 'ho, ho, ho''.
I'm a single mom to a great adult daughter, and I have a full-time job as well. I started reading m/m romancein 2008, then went to reviewing and then writing.
Some dares and prompting of friends led me to the role of author and they've always been my biggest cheerleaders.
This was a two-star read for me (what with a woman date-raping a guy just because she fancied him and wanted to have his baby, then popping an aneurysm a year later and dropping dead, but not before finding the time and having the foresight to draw up a will and leaving specific instructions about her drug-dealing, gay and crass little brother having to raise her three-month old baby with the baby's father, who works at a sex toy factory, loves vegemite on toast for breakfast, enjoys watching gay porn with his uppity fiance and, naturally, has no idea about the little fella's existence) until I reached the part about the Christmas party at Aaron's (the baby's father) workplace and reading that Mary, bent over the manger (which instead of a baby, held a purple vibrator) with vibrating nipple clamps and a ball gag, Joseph poking her from behind wearing a butt plug with a horse tail and the three wise men having formed a man train, were part of the Christmas decor.
Anyone who has the guts to put that kind of image in my head, deserves a five-star rating from me.
Aaron proposes to his girlfriend the same night he finds out he is the father of baby Gavin delivered to his doorstep by the hot and perfect Ben. It seems that Aaron had a forgotten drunken hook-up at last year's office Christmas party with one of his co-workers (Ben's sister). She's recently passed away and left an ultimatum. In order to keep his baby Aaron has to agree to live with Ben for 2 years. Things happen very quickly in this improbable plot when the guys move in together. Aaron falls in lust with Ben and with baby they make three. The ending is a pretty randy Christmas party at the sex-toy workshop where Aaron works. Needless-to-say belief must be suspended to get through this fluffy GFY short. An extra half star for the author hitting all the prompts.
Freaking awesome! I've never seen an author get so much mileage from one four-letter work. I laughed out loud at every single use of the word "much." I cannot recommend this story highly enough. Coffee has been spluttered! Hot, funny, and sweet, all at the same time. I wanna join that biker gang.
The biggest disappointment will be the ending ... because it feels abruptly stopped (even if the line that ends the story is a great one). This one probably has one of the most peculiar job occupation in a m/m romance *grin*. And it's pretty funny too.
It's a freebie, I know I should not have hight expectations, I know But WTF?
"“If I’m not mistaken, this is gay porn, and seriously Banging Both Ends 1 was superior. I’m also pretty sure you said that chick here last night was your fiancé. Or is she a tranny? She was pretty tall.” “Don’t be disgusting. Former fiancé thanks to you. And everyone knows women are all about gay porn these days. It was for her.”
Ok, seriously... WTF? Or is she a tranny? She was pretty tall.” “Don’t be disgusting.
no again, did i read it right? One main character said it? Tranny? And the other main character answer "don't be disgusting??????"
Oh God... WTF?
Freebie or not, if I read a M/F romance when a character do a joke, insulting a gay male character I will go berserk. If I read a MM story, free or not, that INSULT trans* I'll go berserk too!
So, yeah WTF!
maybe I got it wrong... I hope I got it wrong. I HOPE I got it wrong, but that is a conversation of this freebie. And it's... absurd.
Unexpectedly sweet and funny with quite a unique set up. Through a series of events, Aaron discovers he was tricked into fathering a child late last year, the mother has died, and the baby and baby's uncle (a.k.a. the mother's hot, gay brother, Ben) need to move in with Aaron. The story does a great job of showing the little steps that reveal Aaron's growing attraction for Ben. Aaron tries to deny that he's attracted, but he can't help himself. His ultimate acceptance of his desire for Ben, and his acting on it, made me want to cheer. The humorous holiday party setting that one can only expect of Aaron's working at a sex toy manufacturer is icing on the cake.
I really like this author's work and humor; I'll keep an eye out for more from her.
P.S. Being a newbie to m/m romance, I didn't figure out until now that "GFY" means "gay for you." I like this theme and will seek more out.
First of all I need to mention the cover. I was so focused on the freaky baby face I didn't realized what the mistletoe was hanging from... O_o Too hilarious!
I really enjoyed this story, it was really cute. How Aaron acted around Gavin was adorable and justifying his attraction to Ben was as well. You can definitely tell this is a challenge-fic because the ending is quite odd. Still a really enjoyable, goofy holiday read.
Fabulously funny and entertaining story about a guy who works for a sex toy company and the totally unexpected, and life altering, surprise he receives one night. This one's got a bit of everything: a GFY theme, a cute baby, tons humor (I loved the descriptions of the office Xmas party) and of course a couple of sweet, sexy guys. Definitely recommended.
This had real potential, cute idea, good mc's but something was missing and I'm not fond of shorts ending so abruptly it's like someone forgot to print the closing chapter.
Met all of the requirements of the task challenge. Dialogue between the two main characters was very believable. I really like the vegamite scene. But why are there two Chapter 4s?
This story was ridiculously implausible, but definitely had some cute and funny moments. I think ridiculously implausible is all you can expect from a Christmas-themed, M/M, choose-your-own-story format.
This story had a great premise and lots of humor but I had difficulty with the abrupt ending and the non-issue (big issue!) of the lead being raped.
The humor here is great. Aaron's job at a sex shop is full of humorous surprises that readers with a raunchy sense of humor will enjoy as I did.I also enjoyed the set up of Ben, the baby's uncle, moving in with Aaron and these two creating a family.
What I detested was that Aaron was date-raped to knock up Ben's sister the previous year at the holiday party and neither he nor Ben find any issue with this. Let me say that again: HE WAS DATE RAPED! The author really needed to find another plot device for the baby to happen because this one was HORRIBLE.
Finally, the ending was just too abrupt for my taste. I wanted an epilogue or something to show romantic relationship development instead of what happened at the end of a heavy-drinking-raunchy-Christmas party.
Perhaps I'm too harsh on what is marketed as a fun little freebie but this fell short for me.
WTF? The guy was drugged by a woman that wanted to have a child and the guy just say 'muh'??? Hello, he was raped! But hey, we all know that guys can't be "really" raped by women so why make a drama about that. Cliche.
And again the two women briefly present in the book are bitches. Cliche.
All guys don't dream of eating and drinking junk food. Cliche.
For a guy that just lost his sister three weeks ago, Ben doesn't seems too bereaved. But hey that would ruin the mood for the story! Cliche.
Horny 'liberal' people that work on a sextoy workshop. Cliche.
What I liked was the tone this story used, very funny.
The fact that Aaron doesn't freak too much ( just five minutes loll) at the new of his paternity was a good change of the other stories that used the same plot.
And the complete denial Aaron live in. Can the guy be more clueless?
Note: Hundred dollars for a tree? Wow! Where I live that cost twenty-five.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
- The appearance of the baby - He watches gay porn with his fiance and is in denial - Gets dumped because of baby, well more because a female character in a m/m story must be a cold bitch, it's almost a rule!
Oh and according to this if a woman is tall she's probably a tranny and trannies are disgusting I think it's meant to be banter but still.
Wow, taking into account the prompt this could have gone so deeply wrong……But it was really good and I’m sorry I haven’t read it earlier. Respecting all those outrageous prompts and still managing to make it YOURS….. good job Tam. And I can’t even imagine the amount of research you had to put into writing this. The sacrifices some of us have to make. I feel for you Tam, I truly do :)
Really funny and sweet when it was called for and the MCs are endearing.
P.S.: Are Lovejoy hiring ? 'cause it sure as hell beats my work Christmas parties ! :)
This was a very cute story. I liked it....of course going in I thought it was smut smut smut...but no it was not LOL what can I say? Anyone who knows me knows I love my m/m ;P But still, I liked the story regardless :)
Hilarious! And yes I know I’m reading xmas stories in the middle of august and also is 30°C in Argentina...but who cares! With those 5 prompts given to the author things could go in any direction. This was a funny, inventive and sweet GFY story. And I love couples with babies.
4.5 stars. Very good, very funny short m/m holiday romance about a guy who works for a sex toy manufacturer and discovers that he has a son he didn't know about.
Tam Ames did an awesome job of creating a story out of the prompt she was given. I enjoyed it, but it was too much story for it to be so short. Ben and Aaron need a longer story.
