Based in Southern California, Guido Henkel has been a computer game designer and interactive fiction writer for over 25 years before he decided to try his hand at traditional novelized fiction.
Among the many award-winning games he's worked on as the "Realms of Arkania" series which was the official adaptation of the highly successful German pen&paper role-playing game series "Das Schwarze Auge." However, he has also worked on titles such as "Fallout 2" and "Planescape: Torment," a game based in one of the more extreme and mature AD&D universes.
Guido Henkel is the creator of the gothic horror dime novel series "Jason Dark: Ghost Hunter," which he not only writes but also publishes.
Guido Henkel – Terrorlord, A Jason Dark Supernatural Mystery (2010) – Jason Dark (Ghost Hunter) and his partner, Siu Lin, battle to stop a Terrorlord from opening the Gates of Hell, which would bring the world of the living to an end. Jason Dark is captured by the Terrorlord and Siu Lin partners with Herbert (H.G.) Wells to try to rescue Dark and save the Earth. It’s another creative, entertaining and suspenseful 19th Century supernatural mystery novella from Guido Henkel. This is my 10th Jason Dark supernatural mystery and I have enjoyed all of them very much.
The story for Guido Henkel's Terrorlord starts with a man named Edmund Hett who is performing a ritual by candlelight that will summon the Terrorlord. The Terrorlord is a skeleton type creature whose one desire is to open the seven gates of hell and unleash the creatures of the underworld to kill everyone on earth.
The Terrorlord uses mind control to use Edmund Hett as a puppet and sends him out into London to open the gates of hell. The terrorlord is also looking for the dark child which maybe Edmund’s son.
Just as the Terrorlord is released Jason Dark feels a tattoo on his arm left by the Terrorlord tingle and knows something evil has entered this world. As a child, Jason accidentally set the Terrorlord free and was forced to open the gates of hell. Jason’s father was able to save Jason and close the gates but the Terrorlord left Jason scarred for life and now is the only one that can stop the horror that is about to destroy Victorian England and the rest of the world.
This book does not go where you expect it to go and keeps you guessing what will happen next, which to me is a sign of a good read. At about the half way point you realize that the hero of the story wasn’t who you thought it was going to be and the antagonist is also not who you think it is. My favorite part of the book is when Edmund Hett enters a London slaughterhouse to open a gate of hell, the scene turns into a bloodbath and this is where the story surprised me(no spoilers here).
My only complaint about the book was that I wanted more character development but considering the fact that there were eight books before this one most readers probably knew the characters at this point. So I guess I’ll have to start reading book one: Demon’s Night to find out more about the characters. Also I found myself thinking that Jason Dark could make a great comic book series. The cover art for all nine volumes is excellent and the way the scenes are described I thought a hand painted comic would fit this story quite well.
If you like gothic horror, non stop action and are a fan of old pulp fiction stories like you would find in Weird Tales, you will enjoy Jason Dark: Ghost Hunter.
Who doesn’t love a good horror story with paranormal qualities? Horror is one of my favorite genres and there simply aren’t enough horror novels floating around. When Guido contacted me for a review of his work I almost fell out of my chair in the process of responding to his email. Really!
Jason Dark is a ghost hunter that fights against evil entities with a fearless attitude. His character reminds me a lot of Harry Dresden in the sense that he always seems to know what to do, and if he doesn’t then he knows someone that does. His partner, Siu Lin is a kick-ass heroine that almost steals Jason’s thunder. I’d like to see her in her own series; her personality and paranormal background make her a memorable character. I was blown away in each of Jason’s adventures. From volume to volume, he faces the unusual… and a few bumps and bruises too. He’s not immortal and that makes following him from fight to fight that much more entertaining.
This fast-paced series does not have to be read in order, which is another thing that appealed to me. The standalone volumes are action-packed and have enough paranormal entertainment to keep you on the edge of your seat. The Blood Witch is fantastic, it offers a unique twist that I didn’t see coming. I love it when that happens. Catch me by surprise once and I’m sold on your work. Terrorlord was a bit on the creepy side, very dark and disturbing. If blood and guts are your thing, you’ll love the Terrorlord and his wrath. Curse of Kali was very mysterious. It didn’t have the same feel as the first two volumes, and was more like a paranormal detective mystery than horror. Regardless, it still packed a punch and was very enjoyable.
Overall, I found Henkel’s style to be unique. His voice in the horror department was spot-on, giving you just enough darkness to give you chills without going too far. The Jason Dark stories can easily be enjoyed by light horror fans as well as hardcore horror junkies. Take a walk on the wild side with Jason.
TERRORLORD by Guido Henkel is the first book I’ve read in the Jason Dark: Ghost Hunter series. This is actually the ninth book in the series, but they are written as such that you can pretty much read them as standalone books.
What happens when all Hell breaks loose? Ghost hunter Jason Dark and his friends are about to find out as the Terrorlord attempts to open the Seven Gates of Hell in Victorian England. With the help of his human pawn, the Terrorlord begins to unleash the minions of Hell and initiates his quest to take over the world. Jason Dark starts to put the pieces together, but it may be too late. Not only is he fighting the Terrorlord, but his past and its impact on his future looms over him. Jason can’t do this alone; he needs his friends more than ever, but are they ready for the impending showdown with the Terrorlord?
This novella piqued my interest from the opening pages. The mood of imminent danger is appropriately set and the story wastes no time jumping into the action. Fast-paced and fun, this work of pulp horror is pretty much all that any fan can ask for. I enjoyed the historical setting of the novella, and the scene at Butcher’s Row is gory and fun. This latest installment is more about Jason’s friends, Siu Lin and Herbert, than it is about Jason. My only complaint is that there are some typos throughout the Kindle edition and, at times, they can be distracting (a couple of times the names of minor characters are not consistent).
I’d recommend TERRORLORD to anyone who’s interested in pulp horror and wants a quick, fun read.
Although the ninth book in the series, this is the first in depth look into Jason Dark’s background. We learn about his father and how Dark originally was introduced to ghost hunting and the like. I really liked that Jason is vulnerable in this novella. He is affected by his past in a way he never expected to be affected again, making him a character who needs to be saved in this novella. Because of this, Siu Lin, Dark’s sidekick, has much more up front involvement and I really enjoyed seeing much more of her. H.G. Wells is also back in this novella and it was a very nice change to see the more minor characters take on a bigger role, especially as Siu Lin is such a kick butt heroine...
“You shall open the Seven Gates of Hell!” – Terrorlord
The Terrorlord – the monster that almost killed Jason Dark as a child – is back and more determined than ever to unlock the Seven Gates of Hell and bring the world of the living to an end. Branded by the Terrorlord as a child, Jason Dark is powerless to stop the evil…
This is eight Jason Dark adventure I’ve read, each better than the last. The writing is tight, the pace fast, the story gripping. I really enjoy the way Henkel weaves historical figures and facts into his stories, though the way they used to cull livestock in 1881 was rather gruesome. Gruesome but factual.
Another fine "Jason Dark" novella by Guido Henkel. I can't help but think of the old gothic Hammer films of my ill spent youth, when reading something by Henkel. Henkel had to have been influenced by that old production company. In this novella, all hell is breaking loose and Jason Dark can't stop it. An old adversary of Jason Dark, the Terrorlord, returns with his plan to open the "Seven Gates of Hell." The Terrorlord has developed a chess-like strategy to destroy mankind and Dark's friends must take up the battle. I enjoyed seeing more of the character Siu Lin in this novella. The story is a dark, fast-paced romp through the gaslit streets of London. I highly recommend it.
