Houston, Texas--Cowboy boots, baseball and journeys to the stars . . . right?

Wrong. Because Houston is also home to Jabril Karim, one of the eight powerful Vampire Lords who control all of North America. And as Private Investigator Cynthia Leighton will soon discover, not all Vampire Lords are created equal.

Jabril is the face of evil in the new world, a vampire who values no life but his own, who enslaves those he desires, steals whatever he covets, and destroys anyone who stands in his way.

Running from L.A. and its seductive Vampire Lord, Raphael, Cyn sees the Houston job as a welcome refuge, a place to get away and heal her broken heart. But Texas will be no vacation. Cyn will confront a true enemy in Jabril, one who will go to any lengths to satisfy his lusts, enrich his coffers, and expand his power.

Fighting for the lives of two young sisters, Cyn's journey will take her through the streets of Houston and back to L.A., where the human police are determined to bring Raphael down for the murder of one of their own. But the danger doesn't end there.

Jabril has set his sights on Cyn, and he will stop at nothing to have her.

4 Not all vampire lords are created equal Stars

First read 3/2014
Reread 4/2019

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

Going into this read I was already upset that Raphael and Cyn were not together, so imagine my surprise when I loved this book. The plot was so strong, Cyn was so awesome, and Jabril was so evil that I was easily able to overlook that fact that Cyn and Raphael didn't make up til later in the book. I don't think I have ever read a book before were I was rooting for the death of a main character the entire read. Jabril was disgusting and I truly hated his ass. His death wasn't slow enough or painful enough for my bloodthirsty ass. Just sayin'!

Cyn really shined in this book. She was smart, brave, and kicked some serious vampire ass. Raphael had me so mad in the first book. Don't get me wrong I really liked Raphael, but he totally wussed out over his feels for Cyn in book one. In this book he really brought his A game, and had me swooning with his words of love. Duncan who was really standoffish in book one was so cute, and sweet in this book. I loved how he opened up. Raphael and Cyn didn't get together til closer to the end of the book, but they had sweet moments through out the book. So I didn't feel deprived of their romance. When they did finally become a couple again omg it was hot! I really liked Cyn's friend Lucia, and I really, really hated Raph's sister Alexandra. She was such a bitter backstabbing bitch, and Raphael was so good to her. Mirabelle and Liz were great. I hope I see more of them, and how things turn out for them. I can't wait for the next book!

5+ viciously bloody, deliciously sexy, left me frantic for more stars!

Jabril is a continuation of book 1, Raphael, and a more brutal, heartless, evil vampire I’ve yet to meet than Jabril. He is not a good guy. He is not redeemable. He is nothing but evil, through and through. And no, I didn’t love him in spite of his flaws as I do so many alpha vamps. The thing is – the title is kind of misleading for most romance fans because while, yes, this is about Jabril, this isn't about him finding his happily ever after. There's no love interest (for him), no poor misunderstood male… he’s just the worse kind of evil, and this is his story.

Blurb

Running from L.A. and its seductive Vampire Lord, Raphael, Cyn sees the Houston job as a welcome refuge, a place to get away and heal her broken heart. But Texas will be no vacation. For in Jabril Karim, Cyn will confront a true enemy, one who will go to any lengths to satisfy his lusts, enrich his coffers and expand his power. Fighting for the lives of two young sisters, Cyn's journey will take her through the streets of Houston and back to L.A., where the human police are determined to bring Raphael down for the murder of one of their own. Okay, so…

Any vampire with half a brain would know that messing with the woman Raphael’s claimed as his will not lead to good things, true, so this story is brutal, gory, harsh, violent… and it’s one of the best vampire stories I’ve ever read. I’m not going to go into much, but trust me on this… if you’re done with (or just need a break from) glittery, ethical vampires, and love to see bad guys go down hard… READ THIS BOOK! But first, you MUST read Raphael to understand the dynamics of this incredible world created by the very talented D.B. Reynolds.

As I said, it's a continuation of Raphael, and I'm happy to say that

Thank the Kindle gods, I have the next several books already loaded and ready to devour!!!!!!!!!!

Ugh, I told myself I that I was going to read something else. To not continue re-reading this series. But how can I not? It's Raphael? Sadly though, there isn't enough Raphael in this book. Though I enjoy the re-read (even if I just did a re-read of this one), it's not what I want to read right now. I need something else... probably a Raphael who's gay....
“I have been mastered at last, sweet Cyn, helpless in the face of that most human of failings, I love you.”

Second re-read: 06.01.2017
I love how you can fell/see the difference between a powerful, confident man and a egoistical, greedy and over-confident man. I guess you can guess which is who of those two, between Raphael and Jabril. Jabril was simply fucked up, screwed up side ways and a total sicko. Raphael, on the other hand, is sexy, delicious and yummy. Damn I wish I had my own Raphael. As far as the story goes, even re-reading this book for the second time, I'm still enjoying it. It's awesome, full of action, friendship and love. I adore it, though I do still wish we had gotten more of Raphael, as this book focuses mainly on Cyn and Jabril.
“Did you ever find it?” Cyn asked.
“What's that?”
“Something he wouldn't give you?”
“You know, Cynthia, I did. Very recently,in fact.”
“What was it?”
“You.”

Holy F Balls, scary vampire alert! This series is like no other vampire series that I have read. It is dark, it is awesome, and it is more than a tiny bit terrifying!

Okay, okay, granted I'm a huge wimp, but this book was creeptastic! And amazing! First off, some things you should know. Unlike most series where the title of the book is the guy getting his happily-ever-after, this book again follows Cyn from the first book in the series and the title guy is one sick M-Fer. Not a guy you are rooting for. ::shivers::

Jabril himself is a twisted, misogynistic vampire who hires Cynthia to find a girl who was in his "care". What Cynthia finds at Jabril's compound horrifies her, and she works to find a way to track down the girl and her vampire-changed sister before Jabril does.

The majority of the book focuses on Cynthia and her investigation but Raphael does come back into the picture. My favorite part of this book has to be Cynthia. It has been a very, VERY long time since I have liked a female main character as much as I like Cyn. She is perfection. Honestly. She stands up to all of these bad-ass creatures that go bump in the night and holds her own without any of her own superpowers. She is amazing. For real.

Though I can appreciate the awesomeness that is this book, I still tend to prefer my UF to be a bit lighter. The slight horror elements turn me off and my chicken-factor comes into play. However, I have to continue with this series because the writing is really addictive. Very well done!

"Mirabelle felt a flush of pleased surprise. A simple exchange, the wink of an eye, that's all it was. But it said so much: We're together here, you and me. Two women in a room of fools. She returned a tentative smile, but quickly lowered her gaze, suddenly embarrassed at how she must appear to this elegant woman, with her ugly clothes and drab scarf, not even a brush of mascara to bring out the color of her eyes."

See what the author did there? She gave us the formula for how to be a confident and beautiful woman. You get nice tight clothes and a brush of mascara and voila...

We have mirabelle who feels like she is ugly and weak. She has been raped and turned into vampire by evil vampire master Jabril (who thinks women have no use except being under a man, oppressing is his middle name and he is just evil..). Of course Cyn sees the reality of the situation with one glance and rescues the littlw vampiress. They get to LA and first order of business is of course getting a change of clothes for Mirabelle. Because if you have to run away from a sadistic master, you should do it in style. Next day they go to shopping and then they start to look for Mirabelle's missing sister. See priorities ladies!

And then there is Cyn who doesn't do friends -we have been told again and again since the first book- but everytime plot needs a nudge pulls out a convenient friend out of her magic phone. At the very end we are hastily introduced to Sarah who is the next heroine in the book aannd of course a good friend of Cyn. At first I was dumbfounded that how I could forget a character completely because who in their right mind would just scribble it in the last page when they could integrate the said character into the plot and make the reader curious about them. But what do I know heh.

This book has one of those bad guys that you want to be killed in the most painful and horrific way possible. You know those ones? They are so horrible that you are just getting more and more bloodthirsty for their death as the book goes on?

The problem with a villain as vile as Jabril is that they usually don't get the type of death that we need to satisfy the bloodlust. Their death is too easy. Too quick. There wasn't enough suffering involved. And, believe me, this guy needed to suffer.

This would have been acceptable.

This book is basically a continuation of book one, so there is no point in reading it unless you read the first one. I read book one a couple of years ago and never got a chance to get back to the series. Well, I come to goodreads to be a catty bitch and review vampire smut, and I've already been a catty bitch today...

But, in order to show that I have culture, here are some reviews of some classics, to help you guys in life:

This one was better than the first. Now I'm sad to learn that the next books will not focus on Cyn and Raphael.

The book held my interest from start to finish. There is no real twist in the story, but I enjoyed watching it all unfold. It's fast pace and lingering questions are answered. Jabil is a bastard and one you hate and never love. He's not a villain to be admired.

I enjoyed this book, but I could have liked more romance in there. The plot was very interesting and entertaining.
I liked Cyn as a character, even more than I did in book 1. She is an intelligent kick-ass and yet sensitive and emotionally open woman, although she doesn't really perceive herself that way. She is strong, capable, independent, smart, good hearted, self-reliant, self-sufficient and yet, perfectly capable of asking for help and giving it.
Overall, it is a pretty good developed book. I can't give it more stars because I am a sucker for romantic intrigue and angst, and I found that a bit short in here for my taste, otherwise it is a pretty nice read.

I am sure I'll keep reading this series, although I have to say that neither book 1 or book 2 are Paranormal Romance. They might be sold as such, but they are clearly Urban fantasy books, which is fine with me too, I am just not sure what I will find in the next installments of the series.

P.S: The covers, book titles and specially the series title suck in my opinion. If it weren't for my Goodread's friends reviews, I would have never picked the first installment up. I am happy I did though.

SUCH A LOVELY SURPRISE:

This book is a continuation of the first one. HOW MANY TIMES have you finished an outstanding read and just wished for the author to write another one with the same characters you loved so much? And only to get your hands on the second book of the series and realize that all the characters have changed and only if you are very lucky you will get a little glimpse of them? I've suffer with so many series for this reason... But then I read book one in Vampires of America and had that very same feeling just to see that book two would give me much, much more of Raphael and Cyn... **sigh. Just like that this author became one of my favs! Because she gave me something that not one author in the paranormal romance genre was able to give me!

ABOUT THE BOOK

So in this book we face Raphael trying to stay apart from Cyn, figuring what he really wants and facing his own demons. At the same time we see a heart-broken Cyn trying to get over Raphael and going on with her life. And what better to put distance between them that a work proposal for Cyn? Houston's vampire Lord, Jabril, needs Cyn's help to find his disappeared 'ward'. Once Cyn gets to Jabril's place she realizes that nothing is what it seems and that some things are terribly wrong with the Texas' Lord. So be ready to see this marvelous heroine getting things wright and fighting to help those who are defenseless. Also be ready to see Raphael trying to win Cyn back... ***sigh.Nothing gives us a better HEA than time. When you waited so long to see them together, once you do, you realize that waiting only made the reunion sweeter.

COMMENTS ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

How to put into words how grateful I am that finally an author has done what so many couldn't for me? Paranormal romance is not an easy genre to write. I've read hundreds of books I regretted, but this one is going straight to my favs list. I adore the way this author describes things and how she gives life to her characters. This is an amazing series and I just know I won't be able to stop reading it until I'm done.

Do you guys know what I really thought once I found this series: OMG, not another of this lame vampires series... This because I have read so many lately where authors try to give the vampire theme a funny or creative side, which I usually hate. I've read some funny series about vampires which I loved, don't get me wrong, but they never became favs of mine as I enjoy this theme the most when it's taken seriously. Another thing I thought was Vampires of America? Seriously? what a stereotyped name for a vampire series! and WTF is going on with the covers? The reason for why I'm telling you all this is because if you thought the same I needed to tell you that you need to forget about all this and just read the books because they are so worth it! Forget the cover, forget the titles and just read it! This is a new author for me and I just know I'll keep reading her books from now on because I adore her writing style. Even with the last books published on my favs series I haven't been this absorbed and captive as I was with the books in this series. So thank you D.B. Reynolds for these amazing reads and please just keep them coming.

What a great book! The second instalment in the Vampires In America series was better than the first. It upped the action from the get go and never let down. Where as Raphael was a little slower to start, I appreciated diving right into this one.

Jabril picks up a month after Raphael finished, leaving Cyn desperately trying to move on from her Lord vampire but failing miserably due to some hot and bothered dreams that appear to be more real than not. She is working hard, mainly to forgot the dark-haired master, but also to keep herself moving forward. Cyn finds herself once again hired by a vampire, Jabril, lord of the southwest, to find a missing young woman once of his staff. She also happens to be the sister of one of his vampires, and a future wealthy inheritance.

Cyn once again displays her magic and lethal, cunning investigative skills to source out the disappearance. However, once in Texas, Jabril's stronghold, she finds things are not as they seem and decides to alter her intentions.

I really like Cyn. She's smart and resourceful, yet kind and vulnerable. She's a great heroine and reading about her never gets boring. Jabril on the other hand is one sick mofo. He's ruthless and brutal in a very primitive and uncivilized way, using fear and manipulation to steer his followers. His intentions are always selfish and self-serving. And unfortunately his plans for Liz, the missing girl, and her vampire sister, Mirabelle, are sinister indeed.

What about Raphael? well, he shows his face at about 40% in. No doubt Cyn is avoiding him at all costs but is forced to deal with him when Jabril's intentions become known. I loved Raphael even more this time around. He was much more open and willing to share his past and feelings with Cyn. His reasons for walking away were very believable and he completely redeemed himself with a heartfelt speech for her.

So needless to say, the relationship problems between Cyn and Raphael are resolved and then some, but the story continues of course focusing on others in this world. This is a great series and really reads like paranormal RS.

GENRE: PNR/RS
STEAM: Moderate but strong
POV: 3rd person
CLIFFY: No, but segue to the third book in the series.

All right, Jabril is one creepy dude. But Cyn really shines in this book. She's scared to death of the Texas vampire lord and his freaky minions, but stands her ground and saves the day. Her actions are really the definition of bravery. At first, anyway. Then things go downhill. We don't see much of her man Raphael for quite some time, as he and Cyn have called it quits due to him being the typical male, scared of his feelings. I didn't like this one quite as much as the first in the series, but this is still a great world to lose yourself in. I'm anxious to see what it's like in another vamp's territory. I understand that this is the concluding story for Cyn and Raphael.

Terrific second installment! Jabril is NOT a good guy or one that you would want to have a relationship with. Most vampire series focus on the romantic element between the two main characters and that is not the case here. Jabril hires Cyn to locate someone after he hears how she helped Raphael in his investigation. These vampires are very territorial, and Jabril’s intentions seem to be more than just the need for a good PI. This story packed a lot of punch and you get a good mix of the new characters and the continuing story that involves the ones from the first book. Raphael and Cyn meet again and they are at odds on how to continue, if at all. You’ll have to read it to find out. Duncan played a big part in this book and I’m really starting to crush on this vamp.

This is a smart, well thought out series, with a lot of life left in it…thank goodness!

I liked this one more than the last one.

Ok, so everyone was right, this series really is good.
I loved the characters, really liked that they finally got the ending they deserved. Too bad we didn't see much of Raphael, at least not as much as in the previous book. He's still a badass though, and so is the heroin. I like that she has weak points as well and they're not the all powerful couple I'm used to, they both have their flaws.
The plot was good, nothing exceptional but good nonetheless. And it was fast-paced, no annoying, useless information.
Really glad I continues the series :D

Spoilers ahead

It's late and I'm so sleepy but I couldn't put this book down, now the romance is almost non existent here as Raphael and Cyn only reunite almost at the end but the plot though gruesome was very interesting.

Jabril the raping, murdering vampire Lord hires Cyn to find the runaway sister of one of his vampires. Cyn in all her badass glory, realizes that Jabril is a sick monster who raped and turned the sister so he could legally claim her money, she rescues the sister and takes her back to California. While trying to find Liz she also solves a case of murdered runaways with a human framing Raphael for the murders. Crooked cops, judges and a surprising betrayal from Raphael's camp round out this one.

I loved Cyn! She was everything I hope for in an h even though she didn't ask the hard questions I was hoping for at Raphael's return, I still loved her.

Raphael's reason for abandoning Cyn at the end of the last book were dumb and there was no explanation as to how he was feeding while they were separated. Since feeding and sex are so enterwined I'd have liked an explanation as to how he went about it. Since Cyn didn't ask and he didn't volunteer the information I'm choosing to believe nothing happened because then I'd have to bitterly hate Raphael and aside from him cowardly leaving Cyn I'm a Raphael fan.

There's not much couple time between Cyn and Raphael in this one. We get some hot dreams,a brief meeting ,a scene where he apologized and offered his bogus explanation and their eventual reunion. It does end on a high note for them though I expect to see them again as the series progresses

A couple of niggling issues ⬆made this one not as enjoyable as book 1 but I still enjoyed it and am ever hopeful that I can make it to the end of the series.

I enjoyed this second book just as much as the first in the series. The old characters were more well defined and the new characters were pretty much brought in with full personalities that made you either like or dislike them immediately upon meeting them. You knew who was who and who could be trusted in a tense situation.

Jabril Karim is one of eight Vampire Lords and headquartered in Houston, Texas. While Raphael rules through loyalty and respect, Jabril uses fear and threats. Mirabelle is a young woman who was placed in Jabril's care as a 15 year old along with her 10 year old sister. In order to get his hands on her money and control her he turned her one day after her 18th birthday, but he still needs her because she does not get the bulk of her money until she becomes 25, but after that he will not need her.

When Mirabelle's sister runs away to avoid the fate of her sister Jabril hires Cynthia to find her, though he does not believe a woman can do the job. What he wants is to claim Cyn and rub it in Raphael's face for not making her his. With her arrival in Texas Cynthia decides that what Jabril wants is something she will have to thwart in order to save sisters who were given to a monster.

While the main story is good we have a secondary story that is just as good and compelling. Enjoy this book and be ready for the next which should prove just as good.

This book opens one month after the last and Cynthia is still dreaming about Raphael and to kind of get away from him goes to Texas and takes a job with another Vampire Lord and pretty soon she is wishing she didn't because he is pure evil. Cyn is soon embroiled in helping two sisters who are his victims, one who he turned into a vampire, another who has run away to get away from that fate. The book takes us back to LA and Raphael who is back and wants Cyn back.
Most of the book we see Cyn being her kick-ass self and Raphael doesn't appear on the scene much, so not much romance. There is a scene when he opens his heart and tells her what she means to him and that he was unprepared for her.
I think the best part of the book was the heroine who could bring vampires to their knees.

Joint review with Maru
My rating: 4.7*

Maru: Ok, are you ready folks? Aly and Maru joint reviewers extraordinaire are back! Yes, we know that our Raphael review left you wanting more of our hero picks, snarky comments and oh so funny gifs
Aly: Hear, hear!
Maru: So we decided to continue the path of joint reviews and see where it takes us. Aly, are you ready to kick some review butt?
Aly: Sure am Maru!
Maru: Awesome, as a matter fact so am I! Aly, what did you think of the ending?
Aly: Satisfactory :P
Maru: No, just kidding... but what did you think of the story overall?

Aly: Loved it! No more drama lama and stupid decisions(much), it was a great continuation of Cyn and Raphael's story. How about you? What did you think of it?
Maru: I agree with you, but with no stupid decisions we had no plot...I think that books 1 and 2 could be merged into a super book 1, but that´s just me... What did you think of the side characters in this one?
Aly: The villain was very hate-able! I literally couldn't stand seeing him on the page!
Maru: What about Mirabelle and Liz living situation?
Aly: I have no idea how those 2 could survive with that Jabril a-hole, him and his "women are good for one thing and one thing only" ideas.
Maru: Oh God!! I hated him instantly!! Poor girls, having being raised by that SOB...good thing Cyn came along, even though she made a couple of bad decisions, but she´s pretty kicked ass
Aly: She is since we all make those, I think we can let her off the hook. I have to say that I loved how Raphael had to suffer in this one, not much, but it was good for his soul
Maru: Yes!! I liked how she made him work for her, and he said " I love you" first, almost all the heroines say it a week after they meet the guy and they say it first...so this was a nice change

Aly: Yes, a good twist. Did you expect Alexandra to do what she did? I didn't...
Maru: Me either, that was bitchy of her...I liked how Cyn was the bigger person and didn´t let the hard feelings get in the way of decisions
Aly: I would have let him toast her
Maru: Yeah me too..guess we are as bloodthirsty as our beloved Raphael
Aly: I wouldn't call him "beloved", but we are, a lot :)) I kind of liked learning about the Vamps' customs
Maru: Yes that was interesting, something all the vamp books have is the fact that they like to do a show of everything.
Aly: I expected them to be more unforgiving with the whole "New vamp-Lord Vamp" thing
Maru: Yeah Jabril or whatever his difficult name was, was kind of forgiving until the very end
Aly: He was scheming, that's what he was... Can I say that i'm happy with the way he left the world of the living?
Maru: Yes, I was smiling at the part...freaking finally. Now let´s discuss the epilogue.
Aly: I liked it! Cyn and her friend talking... and then the hotness that is Raphael rolling in:P

Neither Raphael nor Cyn know or want to share

Maru: I liked how she introduced a new character, but it was kind out of the blue since Sarah isn´t mentioned previously...I would´ve expected the next book to be about Luci.
Aly: I thought the same thing Maru. I started searching both books for this Sarah :))
Maru: I liked the last line "How is he going to know I´m in Buffalo?"
Aly: Yhea... kind of like kids asking their parents about how Santa knows that they're not home.
Maru: Hahaha yeah! Is there anything else left to discuss?
Aly: Nah. Just that the next books better be as great as these 2.
Maru: I completely agree on that! It was a pleasure doing a joint review with you Aly, thanks for your time. Till next time minions!

"You told me once I haunted your dreams...with you gone, I have lived for those moments stolen from your sleep. I wanted you to remember me so that no other man could touch you the way I had.
~Raphael

Jabril picks up right where Raphael left off. This book flowed a bit better than the previous with lots of romance and even more kick ass action. I loved the fact that parts of the book took place close to home, in Houston Texas.

In hopes of taking her mind off of Raphael, Cyn takes a job offer from another, much different Vampire Lord by the name of Jabril who rules much of the South and calls Houston home. Jabril rules through fear, violence and greed. While Raphael and Cyn's dance continues, the main storyline is the introduction of two sisters, Mirabelle and Elizabeth. The sisters have something Jabril wants and will do anything to have and keep. Getting Cyn within his reach, just to piss off Raphael is a bonus.

What starts out as a job finding a missing girl, turns into much more. Cyn is not only determined to find runaway Elizabeth but rescue Mirabelle from this hellish prison. If Jabril has his way, he'll not only have both sisters and all that comes with their last name, but Cyn as well.

In book one it's very apparent, early on, that Cyn is a kick ass heroine. In Jabril she takes it to a whole new level. I like that author displayed vulnerability, her broken heart over Raphael but instead of writing her heroine into a corner, weeping and waiting to be rescued and to 'matter' again, she sent Cyn out, guns blazing...literally. Such a fast paced, exciting read that screamed GIRL POWER!! All those big bad vampires underestimating all things female...tsk tsk.

Without spoiling, I have to say, Raphael has a way with words. Such a force and yet his heart, his heart is so pure. He too will face difficult decisions, difficult realizations and changes in his world. Changes that will lead straight into book 3. Next stop, Buffalo!

Re-read because a new full book about Raphael and Cyn coming this year. As always, I just love this series. I know a lot of readers gave up after the first book, not realizing that there was more to come in this book about the couple, which actually finishes up their story.

2.5 Stars

The plot kept me intrigued and prose improved greatly in the second installment of Raphael and Cynthia's story; however, the romance aspect was even worse (if that's at all possible) than in the first book. It was almost non-existent in this one. Why the author felt the need for two books (other than a ploy to keep readers) to tell Raphael and Cyn's story I haven't a clue. The book's focus was NOT on them as couple, but on Cyn and her new work assignment with the vampire, Jabril (the villain). In fact, Raphael didn't make an appearance until the book was half over and, then, only marginally. They do finally get together near the end, but by then, I was so disconnected from them as couple I honestly didn't care anymore. The only reason I gave this book 2.5 star is because of how intrigued I was by some of the secondary characters. Especially, the plot surrounding Mirabelle and Elizabeth. They are the only reason I kept read.

This series should never been labeled Paranormal Romance. It's not. It's Urban Fantasy with a decent plot, improving prose, and a (lackluster) splash of romance.

Jabril is book 2 of Vampires In America and I am so hooked! I really enjoyed Raphael and delving into this world where there are eight Vampire Lords ruling with absolute authority over eight different regions. Raphael (the vampire) is so powerful, sexy, bad*ss, mind controlling, and yet really good to his people - both vampire and human. Jabril (the book) continues the story of Raphael and Cyn, much to my delight. The pace is much faster and suspense filled in this second book by D.B. Reynolds. Jabril (another vampire Lord) is evil and gets off on the pain, fear, and suffering of his people. Cyn is a take no sh*t private detective who strolls head first into danger and kicks *ass - mortal and vampire! I was so happy to read more of Raphael and Cyn's story and to get a better, more satisfying ending than in the first one. I can't wait to read book 3 of this awesome series. Hats off to the author for creating a world in which both humans and vampires exist, knowing about each other and living & working together. This is not your typical vampire story...I loved it!

Cyn is AWESOME!!!
Love this girl:)

This one is the continuing of Cyn and Raphael relationships.
Love that, he the one who eat the humble pie admit his feeling and she the one who the strong one, you go girl!!!

Btw, the last scary scene? The scene when Cyn hold that gun and surrounded by those horrid vampires? It's magnificent!!:)))
One complaint from me to though, didn't see C&R together much here:(
From other reviews is more of them in Sophia's book, because they are already solid couple by then.

So, I will read Sophia next, I just want to read all Cyn and Raphael books first before start reading the other vampire lords and their mates.

Do not read this booke if you haven't read Raphael! They are really tightly connected and you'll loose much of the enjoyment and understanding if you've mised Raphael!

Excellent as the first one!

Raphael and Cyn are even more wonderful than in the first book!

Going to Houston, Texas for a job seemed like a good idea, but when PI Cynthia (Cyn) Leighton gets there and meets the vampire who has hired her – vampire Lord Jabril Karim, she realises quickly something is seriously wrong. Jabril is one creepy and sadistic vamp, he is also lazy and he decides stealing wealth from two innocent young women (sisters) is the way to go. What he doesn't count on is one human PI getting in his way and refusing to move.

Raphael also has big problems, as the cops try to arrest him for a series of brutal murders and someone close to him tries to have Cyn harmed.

Only two issues with this read - Jabril’s death felt too easy for me and I wanted Raphael to

Cyn remains one kickass heroine.

*****SPOILERS*****

Yeap...That was me after reading the second book in the Vampires of America series! I think Reynolds has a new fan!

After her heartbreak from Raphael, Cyn wants to be as far from California as possible so when a Vampire Lord from Texas contacts her with a job she accepts to travel there. Jabril is nothing like Raphael. He has no respect for women, humans or even his own subjects. He was the legal guardian of Liz and her sister Mirabelle but the only use he has for the girls is the family money. When Liz escapes just before she turns 18 he will move heaven and earth to get her back. When Cyn discovers the abuse the girls suffer in his hands she will do her best to protect them. In the meantime street girls have been turning up murdered in LA and the police blame Raphael for their deaths. Cyn must now find Liz, figure out a way to protect both girls from Jabril and find the killer.

To say Cyn has a full cup is an understatement, but when you add the still strong feelings she has for Raphael and his insistence in getting her back you have an overwhelmed woman in your hands.

But does she give up? Of course not. She keeps going, she finds her answers, solves the mysteries, catches the bad guys! Cyn is such a strong, lovable heroine. You can't help feeling for her. After her last fiasco she is scared to allow Raphael in again but our heroine is brave.

"Love lets you down, made you vulnerable. No other emotion had the power to wipe away reason, to destroy carefully built walls and leave you bleeding in the wreckage."

And then we have Raphael. Sadly he isn't present in most of the book. I think we don't even have his POV at all. I missed this guy, but he was such a sweetheart going after Cyn that it was satisfying enough.

“I have been mastered at last, sweet Cyn, helpless in the face of that most human of failings, I love you.”

To be honest I found it a little strange that the book is named after the bad guy but who cares. I also hate the covers in VOA books... Such a pity because it is a fact that many judge the book by the cover and they just don't do justice to the books in this series so far!

My favorite character in this book was once again Duncan, with his loyalty, sense of humor and of course his hotness I can't help but look forward to his book.

My least favorite character was Alexandra, the little selfish bitch should have been left to die. Honestly both Cyn and Raphael would be better off without family!

There was also a hint to the next couple there in the end(or at least the female half of it)...So off to book 3!;)

Another action packed addition to a very addictive series. Jabril was a nice surprise as it did not focus on the romance between the two main characters. Raphael and his Cyn's rollercoaster of a relationship, while ever present, took a backseat to the main storyline which centered around freeing two sisters from the book's sinister namesake. The myriad of secondary characters - Duncan was my absolute favorite - were fabulous and I really hope I see many of them elevated to main character status in their own books later in the series. Cyn once again shined as the gutsy, confident, hardcore chick that she is. My favorite scene of the entire book is her literally standing amongst piles of vampire ashes as the last woman standing - at that moment my girl crush was at its zenith. If she wasn't a fictional character I might consider leaving my hubby for her :) Almost as great as Cyn's awesomeness was finally getting a glimpse of Raphael's softer side. An alpha who wears his heart on his sleeve for his love is my favorite brand of hero.

My only real disappointment was that the epilogue didn't offer any glimpses into what happenes to the Hawthorn sisters as they were at the center of the storyline. Instead it was used to introduce the heroine of the next book, a "good friend" of Cyn's who was never mentioned before. It also gives a glimpse into Cyn's life since the end of her story. The changes seemed out of character for her to me but who am I to begrudge a woman in love?

So for now it appears this is the end of the spotlight on Raphael and Cyn and while I will miss them I am looking foward to their novellas later in the series. I can only hope that I am just as spellbound with the other vampire lords and their ladies.
