Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

This title definitely does not shy away from the gore!

description

One thing I'm consistently impressed by is that Invincible is such a vibrant looking comic. Where a lot of graphic novels tend to mute the colors for violent panels, this one does not. Everything, including the more bloody scenes, are played out in Technicolor.
Gross...but awesome!

description

This was (once again) a fantastic collection of issues. I'm constantly surprised at where the story goes, but at the same time, it feels like the direction is very organic. I'm not sure if I'm describing that very well, but it's meant to be a compliment to Kirkman's writing.

description

So much happens that it would be an annoyingly long review even if I were to try to hit only the highlights, and nobody likes that. So I'll just say that for those of you who have been following these characters, you'll love it.

description

The heart, humor, and pacing are all still here, along with the twists and turns that we've all come to expect from this title.

This to me is when Invicible went from great to "HOLY SHIT ONE OF THE BEST COMICS EVER" And it still holds up.

We start off with a invasion of Invincible from different multiverses. They all come to the main one and attack not only Invincible but every hero on the planet. It takes everyone to even fend them off but of course it's not that simple as the eventually overtake the planet. But due to greediness of them they might not get what they want. Just when we get a breather in comes Conquest. The one who challenges Mark to the death just because he's tired of waiting for Mark to make his move to control the planet. After that we also get various plotlines I won't spoil but they begin to question if Mark is doing what he's doing right, and more of Allen and Nolan which is a huge plus in my book.

This is a fantastic collection. Probably one of the strongest in the whole series since get SO many wonderful plotlines, great fights, and emotional moments that'll make you go "WHAT THE FUCK" and cry. I really love Invincible, it might even be my favorite comic of all time, and it mostly began to happen around this part of the series.

A 5 out of 5.

Jaw-dropping. The scope and level of violence and destruction in this volume truly raised the bar for this series. Mark crosses a line and time is actually spent analyzing his decision/actions, trying to figure out if what he did was right or wrong. This feels like a turning point where the book becomes more mature.

Wow. The 6th Volume of Invincible was rather dark. Generally, this is a comic that draws you in with humor, character development, and some twists and turns. That is not to say that it pulls punches. It does not. But, this 6th Volume is one of the darkest and most violent I've come across yet. This is not a bad thing. The artwork seems to have improved as well.

Invincible's story really takes a crazy and violent turn when a Viltrumite known as the Conqueror is sent to Earth to fight Invincible and take over. What a fight it is. This dark and mature tale mixed in with the humor of the previous volumes shows us that Kirkman's series has more to it than just a superhero soap opera. From his developing relationship with the government to his relationship with his girlfriend, to the way he will train his little brother- this issue has a lot of growth in terms of character development. I really enjoyed the Conqueror run. It also finishes (I think) the Sequid story arc.

The continuing adventures of Omni-Man and Allan as they escape the Viltrumite prison and Omni-Man shares his knowledge of the Viltrumite weakness and let's people in on the secret of Viltrumite populations. Finally he returns to Earth to enlist Invincible's help.

Great issue. As far as Invincible's "Return" it just means he switched back to the old yellow and blue outfit. Meh..whatever. Killing or not killing is not a derivative of your ensemble. Just saying.

Great volume in a fun and entertaining series. 6 volumes in and the story is still going strong. Count me in for Vol 7.

I am now halfway through this series, and it has hit its stride- Mark is no longer a new superhero, instead, he is an established warrior grappling with moral decisions of whether it is right to kill a villain or not. Levy sends dozens of Invincibles from other dimensions to attack Mark and the entire globe so every single Image hero is called into action to combat them. Two important heroes make the ultimate sacrifice to fight them, and cities across the world are left in ruins with millions of innocent bystanders killed during these battles. If that's not bad enough, the Viltrumite Empire sends one of their deadliest soldiers, Conquest, after Mark. Their fight was excessively long and bloody. In another part of the universe Allen and Omni-Man team together after their escape and make plans to prepare weapons and allies for the impending war with the Viltrumites who want to take over Earth and breed with them to strengthen their dwindling numbers. In the aftermath of the two earlier battles the little pink aliens from Mars are planning their own conquest- poor Earth is just always under siege!

The illustrations style shifted a bit in the last half of the book, as original artist Walker drew parts of the story, but I have to admit I much prefer Ottley's work now. Walker's Omni Man and Eve's faces were especially different and not to my liking. This series pulls together so many different plot threads and themes- it can be a bit much. It can veer between gore, campy fun and poignant emotional moments in just a few pages or even panels, giving me whiplash sometimes. Nevertheless, this first half of the series has been intriguing and I look forward to the last half.

Another winner. I love Mark's development. There were some rough casualties in this one. Some will probably be reincarnated but not all. I like that. The stakes are real but not necessarily permanent. It feels like a fair compromise. I'll miss the black and blue outfit.

I have some issues how recent books limited the emotional impact.
Until book 5, this comic was great when it came to handling emotional reactions, but now it got worse. What we get is just anger. And I get the race Mark comes from has anger issues, but... where's everything else? Omni-Man was not defined by anger at all but through all other emotions. And until recently, Mark was showing all of these, now it's just anger and screaming, anger and screaming.
You tell me that Mark sees evil versions of himself from all these dimensions and doesn't wonder? What went wrong? What made him evil? Can it happen to him? There's so many of them, which means this is a possibility. A big one. Where's that? Where are the emotions connected to the fact that in so many worlds, he is the destroyer. We had time to focus on Eve's boobs getting bigger but not for Mark feeling something while seeing somebody who looks like him, is him, killing his friends?
Lazy. Lazy. Lazy writing.
Later, he mostly tells people there are different emotions he feels. But what we see is anger again and rarely anything else (excluding being worried for Eve). And I miss how we could see it, see the emotions being drawn, not told.
(There are moments where anger plays well, with Conquest for example.)
And then we're skipping the aftermath of Nolan, now changed, coming back completely? While Mark thought that he was executed? It feels lazy.
All has to be suddenly told through pages. The first time Mark saw Nolan after his father left Earth was handled amazingly through just a few pictures. Now... nothing and then he just talks to Eve.

I am now halfway through yet I can safely say that this is the best comic book series I’ve ever read. Like this is so prefect the themes the psychological aspect of it everything! It’s blowing my mind. I love Dick Grayson. I mean MARK GRAYSON. Mark is just Dick but in a “literally us” type of way.

The problem with giving all previous volumes of this 5-star ratings is I can't really do better when the series gets better as it goes. This is the best volume yet.

The beginning of this one moves so fast that I had to look back at the last collection and make sure I hadn't missed an issue. I had not. This makes for an interesting read but makes me wonder why Robert Kirkman suddenly compressed the story so much.

This is where the Invincible series becomes out of this world kick ass! 5 stars for the action / drama / high stakes. The lead story from issue #60 featured an invasion of over a dozen evil Invincible dopplegangers from alternate dimensions invading the Earth. Invincible alone cannot handle it - all the Image heroes must help! It has big stakes for Mark and other people that he works with, like Robot and Cecil.

After that battle heavy issue comes a bigger and bloodier battle: the Conquest arc! Conquest is a Viltrumite warrior sent to enslave the planet Earth - since Mark clearly hasn't followed orders. Conquest doesn't mind tearing Mark limb from limb to do so - that's pure entertainment to him. Mark is clearly outclassed yet again. There's a big twist involving Atom Eve - which helps if you read her two parter special - but essentially she is very powerful - and her actions here will come up again later on.

Simplemente Impresionante.

Another good edition and one that was full of carnage. I liked the storyline here but found the character conversations fell into monotone, some of the one liners failed. I found myself enjoying certain portions of the book even though it started ticking off playlists for storytelling. The ending was fitting, especially for the direction of the mythology. The huge battle that sets the storyline up is brilliant and paves the way for villain introduction. The Kirkman humour is essentially the same for every character, the characters are distinct, only the artwork. This series is a 4 and I don't think it will hit the 5, the book is quite contempt with the family dynamics of its superhero and if the series conclusion wasn't announced you could see this series going on forever.

Can I just say that in regards to the story, Kirkman delivers as always but this collection belongs to Ryan Ottley's amazing art. The Conquest arc contained some of the best fight sequence/mass carnage art I've ever witnessed. Think I'm overstating? Check out this cover for issue #63: http://www.majorspoilers.com/wp-conte...

Continuing the series.
Oliver is growing up and becoming a teenage, while we deal with a modern issue, Atom Eve s pregnant and doesn't know how to tell Invincible.
Invincible battles a cruel warrior sent from his father's planet, and almost is killed. Lastly we have the return of his father, asking for his help, making matters more confusing on and off Earth.

Much of the Ultimate Collections Volumes 3 & 4 were setups for this story.

When issue #60 came out in comic format, it was billed as a one-issue vent comic crossing over with all the Image Comics superhero teams and characters. And I Hated It. As a single issue, I found myself irritated at the pacing, the lack of time spent with any characters (seriously, the "crossover" aspect could have been entirely edited out of this "event", as the four people excited over seeing Spawn Collection, Vol. 1 in the pages of Invincible were probably so bummed out that Spawn is kind of sort of in one panel, that they complained about it to their hockey action figures (aka only friends) all night long, until their local comic store opened, at which point they went in to complain to the person behind the counter who Absolutely Hates Them.

But as the first part of a major shift in the Invincible story, it's actually very good. There is so much medicorely-written mopiness and romantic pining in the previous two volumes, that it's kind of nice to start a story that's all action and consequences but very little discussions of feelings and regret. That all comes in the net few issues, but the action at the beginning of the story makes it seem necessary as opposed to something to suffer through before the action. "I feel bad about peeing on my friend's cat" is much more easy to identify with than "Should I pee on my friend's cat? What if they're not my friend? What if they're my friend but their cat isn't? What if they aren't but their cat is? Do I even have to pee? Why did I drink three gallons of Gatorade this morning? You know what, fuck Terry, and fuck Terry's cat. I had to listen to that guy gripe about Todd McFarlane comics for an hour this morning. Maybe instead of peeing on Terry's cat, I should pee on his comic collection. I hear Spawn issues are one of the few comics that go up in value when they're drenched in urine. I'd actually be doing him a favor."

Where was I?

Ah yes, the emotional exposition in this volume is placed better than in the previous two, and makes the story feel more vital than previous volumes.

"Still Standing", while great on its own, is also a wonderful buildup to "Growing Pains", where several of the B plots take turns being center stage, and somewhat resolved. There's still plenty more story to go, but it's nice to feel that some parts of the story are wrapped up so we can prepare for the next big twist.

The one drawback to this collection is the final issue "Invincible Returns". Why this was put at the end of a volume makes no sense, as it's a recap of the previous seventy issues. Including what you just finished reading. An editor who paid more attention to how narrative works, would have put this at the beginning of the next volume, as opposed to the end of this one. But even if they'd done that, it's just a Chris Claremont Narration Box Clip Show with forgettable art and absolutely no impact on the rest of the series. It's like an illustrated Wikipedia entry of the first seventy issues. Skip it. Kirkman is better than this issue, Ryan Ottley is better than this issue, Corey Walker is better than issue, and you are better than this issue.

I recommend this to fans of superhero stories with conclusions to storylines, Justice League enthusiasts who get hard when someone whispers "Starro" in their ears, event comic fans who can only budget for one issue of one title, costume designers who want to see dozens of variations on the Invincible costume, and those four guys who really wanted to see Spawn in that one panel. Viva Mcfarlane!

Invincible Ultimate Collection vol 6 sees the series at its strongest point yet!

Right from the get-go this volume slams the gas peddle through the floor and does not let up until about the halfway point of the book. At the end of volume 5 I was wondering what Angstrom Levy was planning with the alternate Invincibles, and how long we’d have to wait to see this plan unfold. The first issue of this book starts off with the army of alternate Invincibles leveling most of the major cities in the world, with all of the heroes of this series and the Image universe struggling to take them down. We get an epic sacrifice from Rex Slode, and a satisfying character arc that makes his conclusion more sweet than bitter.

During the cleanup from the Invincible attack, the Viltrum empire sends one of their most ruthless soldiers, Conquest, to take over the planet, and the series then goes from an edgy super hero series to an R-rated set of DBZ episodes. For four issues we get some of the most intense and gruesome battles I’ve ever seen printed in comics, with a handful of surprises along with it. This arc concludes with Atom Eve losing control of some of her powers, and Mark questioning his high morals as he deals with the guilt from the last 2 giant back-to-back attacks.

This volume also sees the return of quite a few things from this series past. First up we get the return of Nolan and Allen the Alien in a few issues with art from Invincible’s original artist Cory Walker, who has improved immensely since the series’ start. We learn that the Viltrumites are near extinct, and we follow our new favorite duo as they fly across the universe in search of the weapons from Nolan’s books that will help in the war against the Viltrumites. Teaming up Nolan with Allen was the smartest move Kirkman could make for the character, because his friendship with Allen truly shows his change of heart and really redeems the character.

We also see the final return of the Sequids, and while this felt like almost a down-step from the first half of the book, it was a well-earned climax to Mark’s dark change of heart after we see him murder an innocent man who was controlled by the Sequids. While it was a fitting homage to Symbiote Spider-Man seeing Mark get a little darker and edgier with his new darker costume, it was a warm welcome to see the inevitable return of his original costume and a change of heart back to his old morals.

At the halfway point in the series, Invincible continues to break the boundaries on super hero comics, and continues to impress me the further into the series I go. I’m glad to have 6 more books to go because I’m not ready to get off the ride.

*spoiler alert* jesus christ.... its like BAM BAM BAM BAM all at once. this volume by far is the most action packed to date. conquest, sequids, universe girl, the dino thing everyone is obsessed about... officially marking the end of season 3. well, from this point on, everything is new, so i think ill be able to review without bias. honestly, part of me hopes the show doesnt follow this volume by heart, considering its all too much. mark literally cant catch a single break. im aware theres most likely a time skip in between the invincible war and the sequid shit, but damn like my brain hurts. besides that, this volume has had my two favorite issues so far, ive put them in my fav-comics list. i can tell from this point on, invincible is gonna get darker. allen/omni-man is my favorite trope so far, i actually enjoy reading their storyline. atp i think mark is in a messy place, and the whole holding back/wanting to kill thing is just exhausting. last thing; is cicil dumb broo, of course this guy escaped in like 2 panels.

Invincible continues to be one of the, if not THE, best super hero comics out there. And it's definitely Kirkman's best work. The story builds, the characters grow, the relationships flourish and die. Little bits from one issue come back 30 issues later. There's humor, tragedy, action, and beauty. It's a darned fine series. But watch out. It'll rip your guts out. As in the best fiction, nobody is safe. It doesn't matter that a villain is really cool, and really interesting. They might die. And it will be a final death, with no reset button. And the worst punishments are held for our heroes. In spite of its colorful panels and classic Marvel style art, this is not a kids book. And when it gets dark, it gets really dark. It deals with some pretty shadowy gray areas of morality. Good stuff.
