my aunt wrote this book based on a midwife she portrays in drama; it is historical fiction.

I got this book at the library cause I it piqued my interested. Unfortunately it was difficult to reach as it was written in "the following dialect (is) representative of the speech patterns of those who have lived in this area." Granted people from that area do have a dialect, but it isn't that hillbilly backwards and I would think that the author would want to make something easily understood by the readers. As a result, I lost interest and was unable to finish the book.

I am from the area where this book takes place. While I loved the story of the midwife’s life, the author’s attempt to voice the local dialect is so far off base that it is laughable. In fact, the butchered dialect and monotonous sentence structure detracted to much from the story, I found myself merely skimming the pages for details pertinent to the life of the midwife.

The character was very endearing but the story was mostly about her dying than the midwifery. I wanted to hear her stories and adventures as a woman of that time. I also had to keep myself from correcting the speech as I read to stay in character.

It was ok. Interesting information on the way if life in the south. Didn’t like style of writing.

An amazing story and life. My only complaint is how much of the present tense was spent on her few last days.
