Amanda Grange was born in Yorkshire and spent her teenage years reading Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer whilst also finding time to study music at Nottingham University. She has had twenty-five novels published including six Jane Austen retellings, which look at events from the heroes' points of view. She has also had two books published under different names: Murder at Whitegates Manor (as Eleanor Tyler; a Regency cosy crime murder mystery) and The Rake (as Amy Watson; a very light and frothy Regency romance).

Woman said of Mr Darcy's Diary: "Lots of fun, this is the tale behind the alpha male," whilst The Washington Post called Mr Knightley's Diary "affectionate". The Historical Novels Review made Captain Wentworth's Diary an Editors' Choice, remarking, "Amanda Grange has hit upon a winning formula."

Austenblog declared that Colonel Brandon's Diary was "the best book yet in her series of heroes' diaries."

Emilia Cavendish is desperate to escape the henchman trying to kidnap her for the evil baddie who wants to keep her for his very own love toy. She just happens to have a ticket for the one of the most elegant staterooms on board the Titanic and she can travel in luxury and safety to her godmother in Ireland. Things don't go very smoothly because:

1) Of course the evil henchman finds his way on board so he can continue stalking Emilia.

2) The ever-so-drop-dead-gorgeous-self-made millionaire Carl Latimer wants Emilia to swap rooms with his ailing mother (don't ask me to explain it) and he's in her face offering any sum for her to agree to a swap. Of course you know that Emilia's pluck and beauty will intrigue Carl, but then a little iceberg kind of gets in the way of true love...

Overall I found this to be a light, easy read and one that kept me turning the pages despite the somewhat predictable nature of the storyline. I liked the two main characters, but at the same time I wasn't fully engaged in their storyline, nor did I feel any real terror during the sinking and aftermath. And then there are those oh-so-forced plot devices. Emilia's poor godmother has a rich friend who just happens to have an unneeded ticket on the Titanic, just so's we can get our poor but well bred heroine into first class. Why she's such a hot-babe that the baddie would go to such extreme efforts to get her back. Carl's mother's instant return to robust health after a few words from Emilia. Carl's mother just happens to have bought a Worth gown too small for the person the gift was intended for, but a perfect fit for Emilia (natch). More evil baddies to plotting after the shipwreck (come on, that was ridiculous!). And then there are the typos. I suspect they came about during the conversion to e-book, but you would think someone would have gone through and proofread it afterwards. A few examples, but there are many more:

"but their fortunes had suffer a reverse in recent times."

"she could not disguise form herself"

"even thought"

"and water was creping up the deck"

I obtained this as a freebie so the typos are more quibbles or giggles, but if I'd paid full price I'd likely be a tad bit upset. A good story, but nothing original or earth shattering. Perfect when you're in the mood for some lighter reading.

I picked up this book while wandering aimlessly through the library. I don't normally read fiction, especially modern fiction and I am definitely not a romance novel person. But I was bored sitting at home after having surgery, I liked the cover art (made the book look decently respectable), and I skimmed the ending at the library to make sure it was happy (not in the mood for heavy thought content after surgery). Reading this book is like eating strawberries and cream--a little nutrition (the history), a little sugar (the love story plot), but all purely for enjoyment. The writing was nice, the plot line somewhat typical, the characters interesting but a little too-perfect to be completely believable. I enjoyed the myriad of detail about the Titanic and the very well-developed interweaving of the plot line with the sinking of the ship--that was about 1/3 of the book. My major complaint was the ending. It felt like the author had a page limit and about half way into the last scene she realized the limit was fast approaching so she hurried up and finished as fast as she could. The final reunion between the two characters was so completely under-developed that it was somewhat unbelievable and rather disappointing, especially after the thorough detail in the rising action. Hardly anything was fleshed out in the ending and there were even a few questions left unanswered (big ones, like what was he even doing there in the first place?). I read quick and I was still bored after surgery so I read the book again...I liked it better the second time. In summary, this book was what I was looking for at the time: a happy, entertaining read dressed up in the respectability of accurate historical detail.

My Thoughts...
Each April I try to read something about the 'Titanic' since it is the anniversary of its ill-fated voyage. What a nice surprise when this year I found this novel by Amanda Grange, one of my favorite authors. I was not disappointed with her story.

Stories about the Titanic always fascinate me, I enjoyed this story it was a fast moving story, and a fast read. I found it quite enjoyable. I realize many feel it followed the movie Titanic, however, only seeing the movie once many years ago, I really don't agree with those statements.

I must say I like Amanda's story much better than the movie. Amanda's story was "G" rated which I liked. No nude scenes or steamy love scenes anywhere throughout this story. It was a delightfully charming story to read. Of course the chaos surrounding the wreck and sinking of the ship wasn't delightful or charming, but the story of the "Titanic Affair" of Emilia and Carl was.

I wouldn't say I am a Titanic Buff, but anyone who is may enjoy this story, especially if they would like some light reading about the Titanic voyage of April 1912.

You may already know that the Titanic hit an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. on the night of April 13, 1912 and sank just over two-and-a-half hours later on April 14, 1912. That was 102 years ago this year on April 14, 2014.

This book is a part of my Kindle library and I liked it so much I awarded it 4 anniversary stars.

I love books about the titanic, and I really loved this one. At first, Carl Latimer seems a bit like mr Darcy - full of himself and his pride. But when he meets Emilia, he changes and they fall in love, until the ship starts to sink.. Luckily, Emilia is put into one of the lifeboats in time, but she is unsure if her lover Carl has made it.

WHAT I LIKED:
1. I appreciate the fact that this author really knew her stuff. She was 99% accurate in all of her Titanic facts and knowledge (the 1% being things that are just speculated, like the other row of lifeboats not being added because it would make the deck look cluttered)

2. I love the fact that she didn't paint Ismay as the villain! OMG so many books and stories do this! but not this one! it accurately explained how he had helped to put women and children into lifeboats only leaving when he was sure no one else was getting into one of the very last boats.

3. I liked what the story TRIED to be. It had potential but there were some problems.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:

I love anything to do with the titanic so I was excited to read this. It was a fast paced story with a lot of action. The characters were well developed and likeable or unlikeable depending on who they were.

Carl came across as a brood at first but I grew an instant attraction to him. His mother was great. It's amazing how a couple of nice words can cure someone who's been blue. Some reviews mocked this but the thing is, if you're told you're I'll but no one knows what the problem is, it is going to make you low. It happened a lot back then.

What I really loved about the stories were the descriptions Amanda used in regards to the ship and even to when it was sinking. It felt like I was there. I found myself reading faster in the hope that it would be over quicker and they would be safe.

If I was to say anything bad it would be the typos. They were very off putting but I think it was caused by the conversion to ebook. This is the only reason I have it four stars.

Overall fantastic story and can't wait to read it again. :)

Love anything to do with the Titanic. Was secretly hoping the ship didn't go down. The title can be misleading as there was no affair. Commoner Emilia was able to use another's ticket on the Titanic. Running from a bad man, she safely boards. Lucky to have a nice stateroom, rich Carl begs her to give it up for his mom with failing health. She won't let him have it. They keep running into one another and her feelings toward him change. You know the fate of the ship. The question is, will these young lovers survive or forever mourn ones death?

The classic story of the ill fated Titanic! Although this book parallels the movie Titanic, this book has some very good plot moments of it's own. I enjoyed the book very much, it makes nice light reading for an afternoon or for a rainy day. I suggest giving it a read!

Great book with just enough history

I love anything about the titanic. Although predictable, it had a good storyline and good character development. I enjoyed it.

Despite having some good qualities, unfortunately I don't think this book succeeded as neither a romance novel nor a historical one.

The romance: I know it's hard in a book this short not to resort to an instant love connection, but this one still felt incredibly quick. You can tell the author tried for the first couple chapters to make it seem like they disliked each other at first, but I don't think it fooled any one. And, of course, because of the inevitable climax, it was all very Romeo and Juliet at the end. And even Romeo and Juliet knew each other for more than a few days.

The history: It's obvious Grange read up on her Titanic accounts, but I feel like that might have done her as much harm as good. It seems she wanted to include every passenger anecdote, so much so that every account on board seemed to either happen to Emilia or happen within her range of hearing. Even the ones that were proven fabrications. It felt like the author was trying to add too many historical references.

There was one moment that did make me laugh out loud. I'm not going to harp on it because it was obviously just an oversight by the author and editor, but I feel like mentioning it anyway: Charles telegraph... was 83 words long. Charles must own New York if he was willing to cough up that much money for a telegraph that was 80% filler.

And that's what I'll remember from this book.

Some spots, near the end, were right from the movie.
Instead of Rose and Jack, we have poor , little British Emilie Cavendish, and wealthy American Carl Lattimer.

We all know how that story ends.

Emilie is only aboard until they reach the Irish port, where she will go live with her Godmother. She is also running away from a rich man that will stop at nothing to get Emilie to marry him. He sends his henchman aboard, to keep an eye on her, and bring her back.

All the fancy doctors in America & Europe say that Mrs. Lattimer is quite ill. They just want to keep getting paid by her wealthy son, Carl. Emilie hears that the doctor is a charlatan, and tells Mrs. Lattimer.

Emilie & Carl form a friendship. In the course of five days, they fall in love.
When the inevitable sinking occurs, they both lose track of one another. After rescue, while aboard that Carpathia, they are both told the other has perished.

Until they both attend the same garden party in NYC. Reunited with each other & friends, they get engaged immediately. Much to the dismay of the rich, busybody women on Titanic, who wanted Carl to marry their niece.

This is definitely not the kind of fiction that I read these days but it was the perfect distraction for this horrific week. Ms. Grange obviously did her research and I learned a few new tidbits about the Titanic. If you are looking for a steamy affair, you won't find it here but will find a lovely little romance with a HEA ending. If like me, you just want an escape, this is perfect.

Happy Ending!!!

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book despite, as I originally thought, it would have the same predictable ending!
However, this wasn't quite the case, as our main characters both survive the disaster and find one another in the end!

Quick, easy read

Enjoyable story with likable characters. It felt a bit like watching the movie Titanic, but I guess there aren’t too many ways to write a love story on a sinking ship! It was well-written though, so I would definitely read more from this author.

Good read!

This story catches you quickly with its tale of adventure. Each character is written so you know them, you learn to love or hate the. The story brings the tragedy of Titanic's sinking and beauty of the "unsinkable" ship to life.

Especially at the beginning and end, read like something my 15 year old might write, almost as if written from a naive & inexperienced person.

I reported many errors in punctuation, formatting, and text throughout the book which I found to be distracting from the story.

Love the style in which the book was written. Remembered myself of the 40'movies period. Took we only a few hours to read it as the book has only 230 pages.

While I enjoyed the setting for Titanic Affair, the romance was forced, unbelievable and way too hasty. As for Mrs Latimer's recovery, that was nothing short of miraculous! However, if you are looking for a novel to while away a few hours and one that won't put any strain on the brain, this could be the book for you.

Poignant

Beautifully written. The dialogs are crisp and full of nostalgia . I felt as if I was there, reliving the moments of pain, anguish and hopelessness. Yet love survived!

I have always shied away from Titanic based fiction because, let's face it, no matter how you dress up the story, you know how it is going to end = the ship is going to sink, and nothing will change that. So I was pleased when I found I really enjoyed this story. The main theme running through the book is the romance between ordinary girl Emilia and super rich Carl, and this made really good reading. At first I did wonder if I was reading a sequel, because there is a "story before the story starts" which is revealed in good time, so that Emilia is a "woman with a mystery in her past" when we meet her.
You know virtually from their first meeting that Emilia and Carl are attracted to each other, but the author still manages to keep you interested, wanting to know if, how and when they will take matters further and to what end, knowing the fate that is in store for them.

There are some wonderful colourful characters in the book including the busy body matrons who are determined to keep the couple apart for their own selfish reasons as well as the evil Mr Barker who has his own plans for Emilia. The descriptions of the ship, its crew and passengers on that maiden voyage really bring the story to life in such a way that whilst reading the book I actually forgot that the ship was going to hit an iceberg and sink, and was really quite shocked for a moment when disaster struck. I found that the part of the book dealing with the iceberg and sinking was well paced and gripping reading and went on for just the right amount of time, without taking up hundreds and hundreds of pages so that I didn't lose interest.

The author has obviously done an incredible amount of research for the book, and it certainly pays off.

Highly recommended romance read.

When I picked up this book, I didn't realize it was a romance, but I probably would have gotten it anyway since I have a fascination for Titanic, both the ship and the movie.

Emilia Cavendish has managed to secure a first-class ticket on the maiden voyage of Titanic and is eager to escape Southhampton and a man who will not take no for an answer. She is scheduled to get off in Ireland, but no sooner had she boarded the ship, than she meets a man who is determined to buy her stateroom for his ailing mother and will not take no for an answer. Carl Latimer doesn't know Emilia Cavendish, at least not yet.

There are similarities between this story and the movie, but I was still curious as to see how the author would make things turn out. There was an attention to detail, and thanks to the movie I felt like I could picture this story better. As with many books I read, I am never ceased to be amazed at the cruelty (indifference and apathy are a couple other words that come to mind as well) among some people, and in this story and time and place, the wealthy versus the have-nots.

I've been on a Titanic kick lately and found this on Pixel of Ink as a free read. I'm reading another Titanic book right now so this book might have gotten a good bump because the other was so terrible, but I don't think that's the case.

It's a nice light read that gets the facts straight (that's the bump), but there are quite a few typos. All the words meant what the author thought they meant so bonus! The typos were easily overlooked to get to the good story underneath. There were a few moments of stretched disbelief and the bad guy was too stupid to live, but the heroine wasn't so definitely worth the time. Entertaining and enjoyable read.
