This book introduces a unique approach to group decision making based on structured dialogue. People tend to shoot down new ideas, especially if the idea is not their own. Pepe Nummi—a seasoned facilitator who has dedicated his life to studying human interaction—has solved the decision-making problem by creating a technique where people need to understand other perspectives and points of view while sharing their own. People don’t just make decisions together but engage in breakthrough decision making—a process where the interchange of ideas leads to new insights and a shared understanding about how to move forward as a group. Breakthrough Decision Workshop Design and Tools introduces a variety of tools for successful decision making and demonstrates how they can be combined to help groups make important decisions together. Open the book and you will ●All major group tools●Analysis how to use the tools●Solid framework for designing workshops●Philosophy for making better decisionsThe book will transform your leadership abilities and provide some entertainment along the way, too.
I had mixed feelings while reading this book. On the one hand, I found the way the author describes the techniques and the flow of the cases useful and easy to follow. On the other hand, I struggled to see how I could apply these approaches in real working situations where I need to act as a facilitator. Adapting this knowledge to everyday practice felt quite challenging.
I was also surprised that the book does not cover online sessions at all. Considering it was written during the COVID period, this feels like a noticeable gap. In addition, the suggested timing often seems unrealistic — for example, selling a team on a minimum four-hour decision-making session can be difficult in many organizations.
Overall, I don’t feel I am the target audience for this book. However, for dedicated facilitators, it could still be a useful and insightful read.
It is a nice intruction manual on how to conduct facilitated workshops. In a step-by-step manner, the author gives all the print-outs on how to be a facilitator in two different cases and two different business requests.
Someone reading this book can take the scenario of the workshop and go to work with the group of people. They would not become facilitators, because the book does not teach a reader to be one. It just gives the blueprint on how to approach a case and structure decision making after a brainstorming session. I would call it at advanced book for someone, who already practices facilitation and is familiar with the group work, but needs additional hints and scenarios to mix it up.
