When a new coach with an entirely different system of play takes over State University's basketball team at mid-season and Chip Hilton is put on the inactive list, the championship team's winning ways are in jeopardy. Original.
I read quite a few of the Chip Hilton books in grade school, and when I spotted this one on the clearance rack of a used bookstore I picked it up on impulse. This is the twentieth volume in the series, and didn't strike me as being as well-written or tightly-plotted as the earlier ones I remember. Chip is off at college with a new coach and supporting cast and the philosophies seemed a trifle too dogmatic and out-of-touch for 1962, much less the current day. Then again, I always preferred the football and baseball books to the basketball ones. The story picks up in mid-season and ends before the end of the season, so the arc isn't convincing and feels sort of patched and incomplete; too, Chip is ill and out of action for much of the time, even though he's still working full time to manage the drug store for his boss, who's also ill and out of action... One of these days I'll have to go back and revisit one of the early books, when Chip was still at home and all was right with the world.
Chip has a lot on his plate in this book! Basketball, work, school, and a new coach. He does what he usually does and buckles down to work only it doesn’t happen like he thinks it should. Love how his friends rally round him to help, and how he influences even his new coach without meaning to. And of course there were some basketball games. Recommended to any sport lover.
