Replete with new photographs and new information, this update of Marilis Hornidge's classic discusses the Maine Coon Cat from the tufts on his ears right down to his feathered toes. Her lively discussion of the maine Coon Cat from the tufts on his ears right down to his feathered toes. Her lively discussion of the origins of the Maine Coon, along with anecdotes from owners and a gallery of photos, accompanies in-depth information on breed standards, showing Maine Coons, health issues, breeding, general care, and cat psychology.
Our gorgeous cat is a Bengal-Maine Coon mix, so I wanted to see how she compares to thorough-bred Maine Coons and the answer is: in every way! (see her twin on the frontispiece of the book!) This book was informative and accessible, although I have to admit it started losing me in the gene/DNA chapter! I enjoyed the "Cat Tails," although I feel the author missed an opportunity for a pun there, which I have supplied. I very much appreciated the specific points that cat show judges are looking for. While our cat will never be a show cat, she is uniquely beautiful and it was great to learn more about her breed.
3.5/5 Definitely a cute little book on the Maine Coon breed. You can tell how passionate the author is about Maine Coons and felines as a whole. For being a vintage book, it still mostly holds up over time. My one critique would be that some of the pictures were randomly placed in the more recent editions and I felt like these could be a much more valuable update if presented better. Quick cute read if definitely share with friends
One of the most authoritative books on Maine Coon cats; a bounty of history of the cats and how they came to be, and fascinating tales of the cat; great pictures. I have all 3 editions of this book and was lucky enough to meet the author who graciously signed all of them for me. A special part of my collection!
