Yikes stripes, this was a hot mess. A lot of nonsense with no real plot or build of emotion between most of the characters, tons of incest, dub-con, and non-con. Plus, oh yeah, teachers who are full grown adults doing completely inappropriate things with high schoolers. This just didn't work for me. The only redeeming quality was the relationship between Ma-chan and Toru, and even that was more of something that was less bad than what was around it rather than something good. Clearly some people love this but I just found it to be awful.

Kazuma Kodaka is a titan of the manga and Boys Love industry, known for numerous titles such as Kizuna, Border, Kimera and My Sexual Harassment, just to name a few. She’s known for her muscular attractive men, anatomy and dramatic storylines. Bad Teacher’s Equation is no exception filled with first crushes, identity mixup and the tried and true trope of students falling for their older and more attractive teachers.

Our main character, Atsushi, has blinders on for only one person. Armed with his memories of the sweet smiling, fair haired young man who took care of him when he was younger, he’s now a full teenager entering high school and can finally pursue the man he loves… or so he thinks...

CW: Student Teacher relationship, Incest, Dubious Consent, Homophobia

I have mixed feelings on this, but I ultimately enjoyed it. It's a comedy slice of life about a school. There's a student teacher relationship, which is not usually my jam. This is also a product of the 90s, had some language with homophobic slurs I didn't like. The characters were still fun, though. I love the art, and I'd be lying if I said I was lenient with this one because the mangaka is one of my favorites. I'm going to continue it and see where it goes.

i regret reading almost all the volumes. not the absolute worst thing I've read in the BL genre (looking at you, Twittering Birds Never Fly and Yaribu) but certainly something you'd not want to read unless you only treat it as a horrible comedy you laugh at instead of laughing with - which is what I did until I dropped it.

Atsushi Arisawa enrolls in Jyogaoka High School just to be near his long-time crush, “Ma-chan”. He has turned down offers from the top five schools in Tokyo to be near him, once he learns that he is the school nurse there. The less than stellar school is co-ed, and has been given the nickname of “Yankee High”. When he first arrives, Atsushi wonders if maybe he’s made a mistake.

To his dismay, Atsushi discovers that his beloved “Ma-Chan” has undergone a complete character transformation, and he does not recognize the loud, brazen man he’s become! Further complications arise in the person of Koji Inagaki. Childhood friends, Inagaki always protected Atsushi from bullies, and had even proposed that they get married, so he could always protect him, a proposal which was sealed with a kiss! Koji still feels the same way about Atsushi. His “girlfriend” Yuriko, sister of one of the coaches, is just a beard; she’s actually a close friend who encourages him to kiss other boys, because she is a voyeur and a fan of boys’ love.

Koji is in great demand by all the sports teams at the school, but he isn’t interested in any of them, only in Atsushi, and he is determined to protect him again, as if their separation during middle school had never occurred. What Atsushi doesn’t realize is that the “Ma-chan” he remembers is Masami Shibata, who is currently on leave from the school, his place having been taken by his brother Masayoshi. A veritable comedy of errors and mistaken identification ensues!

Masami is dating another teacher at the school, Toru Hagiwara, although their relationship is still in the early stages. Hagiwara and Masayoshi are often in conflict with one another over Masami. When Atsushi discovers his error, seeing the real “Ma-Chan”, he transfers his newly discovered affections to Masayoshi, to Koji’s chagrin.

As Koji tries to get closer to Atsushi, Atsushi is trying to get closer to Masayoshi and Higawari to Masami. Koji applies for a job at Club Lush, which is Masayoshi’s club, in order to help out at home. Masayoshi will only hire him if he agrees to join his team at school. Blackmail, anyone?

Well first off, it’s Kazuma Kodaka. Seriously. I’ve loved her work ever since I started reading Kizuna. This is a wonderfully hilarious tale that begins as a case of mistaken identity and progresses from there. Atsushi loves Masayoshi, Koji loves Atsushi, Toru loves Masami, and Yuriko loves to watch gay men in love! It’s got humor in abundance, and it has very sweet moments too, and romantic ones. I’m already cheering for Koji to win Atsushi’s heart!

The artwork is vintage Kodaka. Koji actually reminds me of Ranmaru from Kizuna, and sometimes Masayoshi resembles Kei. Not that I’m complaining, mind you, because I’m not. She’s laid the groundwork for an interesting series here, one which I look forward to exploring. Her plots are almost Shakespearean in their intricacy. I just know there are lots of fun times ahead for all of these guys! Another great series from a great mangaka!

If you enjoy Bad Teacher’s Equation, I suggest you check out Kizuna, and Samurai Love, by the same author.

I LOVE Kazuma Kodaka! I am a huge fan of her works and try to buy everything she writes. This manga is about a young boy, Atushi Arisawa, who transfers to a school of hoodlums just so he can reunite with his childhood crush, Ma-Chan (Masami Shibata) who is the school nurse. But unbeknownst to Atushi, Ma-Chan has left the position and instead his wild, good-looking younger brother, Masayoshi has taken over the job.

When Atushi meets the loud and blunt Masayoshi, he can't believe that this is his precious Ma-Chan who was quiet and gentle. But since the man is the school nurse/teacher and has the name Shibata, the boy believes that he has found his crush. It is a case of mistaken identity that ends up with the truth being found out by Atushi who is angry at first mistakenly thinking he was fooled on purpose. The boy comes to realise that he is in love with Masayoshi after all and begins an all out attack to win his teachers love.

This manga features many side characters like Koji Inagaki (the boy that has a crush on Atushi), Yuriko (Koji's wannabe girlfriend and boy love fan) and Masami and Toru (Masayoshi's older brother and his boyfriend who are the only gay couple in this first volume)

This volume is dated by Kazuma's art style (she later becomes much more streamlined) and the fact that this manga was started in the 1990's and has barely any yaoi in it except for some brotherly love snuggling and kisses between Toru and Masami.

A good start to a great series! I recommend this manga and Kizuna to all yaoi fans. Nobody can tell a story like Kazuma-sensei does.

I really enjoy Kodaka's works. The art isn't as pretty as most artists, but it's still always a good, fun story. This volume was so long it took forever to read! It's a good start to the series, though I'm not sure why it was sealed. There was nothing that warranted it compared to others I've read that are unsealed.

I saw two of her characters from another manga in here as well, which was a fun trip down memory lane for me.

However, I am stuck. Atsushi loves Shibata, but Inagaki loves Atsushi and has since childhood. I don't know who I want Atsushi to end up with! And then there's Yuriko. She's a fun sidekick who would pretty much be me if I was in a manga. Heck, if I had friends like her's I would be like that, too!

Can't wait to read the second volume and see what developments there are.
