Carol's Mate

Rate this book
Life happens when you least expect it...

Carol Scott has everything planned. She'll finish her studies, do her internship, and return to Refuge to help run the medical center being built by her pack, The Ravens. When the time is right, she'll choose a male of her pack to mate with, push out a few pups, and life will continue--nice, neat, and orderly, just the way she likes it.

Then she meets Mark Johnson--sexy, handsome...human. Forbidden. A man who won't take no for an answer. He stirs her senses and even has her wolf sitting up and paying attention. What's a girl to do? Obey the rules or follow her heart and damn the consequences?

Then the choice is taken out of her hands.

I won't spoil the story and give away all the juicy details. However, I will tell you that Zena Wynn is one of my favorite authors, I love the True Mates series. I was looking forward to reading Carol's story and I was not disappointed. This couple played pivotal roles in the other True Mate novels, but we never knew how they came together. Now we know, their book stands on its own, as it should since its the prequel to the series. If you havent had a chance to read this series, you can start with this book. You will fall in love with the characters, and Zena Wynn. Even though this book is a prequel to a series, you dont have to worry about the lack of a plot, or the couple's story playing a background role while the author fills in holes from the series' backstory. Ms. Wynn takes her time to develop the story and the characters. Carol's mate is a sweet love story, not a rushed product that satisfies her publisher but not her readers.

All the books in the True Mate series are winners, Tameka Smiles is my personal favorite. My only beef, is that Amazon does not have the first book in the series, True Mates, available for download

So I read these all out of order ( I started with Tameka's smile) and I'm still not sure if this is the first book LOL. Either way I enjoyed these just as I happily read the rest, always waiting for the big " Surprise I'm a werewolf err shifter and double surprise you're going to be one too!" reveal to happen.

Carol, was very easy to sink into, she's sporty, doesn't mind getting dirty, has her family and her duty towards them in the forefront of her mind and very smart both with book and street sense. And then of course a man comes along looking like heaven must be like this which translates to here comes trouble. I don't want to have this as a spoiler so I'll refrain from saying anymore about the plot but I will say if you're looking for a novel that couples romance, wolf shifters, folks fighting destiny and men who love their woman wholly ( emotionally, spiritually, physically, mentally, are there anymore?) then read not only this book but all of Zena Wynn's true mate series.

I enjoyed reading this story because it was quick, entertaining and fast paced. The story centers around Carol, a college student who also happens to be a shifter. Carol has a seemingly good plan to finish school and return to her pack, the Ravens, but as things unfold in this novella, her plan begins to unravel.

Why? The answer is always a man. A man and a forbidden love.

The writer gets to the good stuff right off the bat, a fact that all readers can appreciate. The main character is likeable and Mark Johnson is very, very sexy. I liked the forbidden love angle and the sexual danger; this added to the sex scenes that are very well written by the way. The ending came as a surprise to me and it was a nice little twist.

I would read it again and you probably will too. Short and sweet in a naughty way.

The order of this series is a bit screwed up, a lot of people mark this the '00' out the series when it is indeed the '05' book in this series. However if you want to read them in an order than makes sense, you would start off with this one. I loved this novel, out of all of them, this one is the best. We are given something that isn't present in the other books in this series, such as major doubt and pain before the 'hero' corrects his mistake. It was a beautiful book and I was glued to it, like no other in the series before.

This is the 5th in the series but the all the action happens before the 1st story.

Carol has just about graduated from College as a RN when she smells a delicious scent. Turns out the scent belongs to Mark Johnson, a soon to be graduated Pharmacist.

As Carol is a wolf shifter and Mark is human, she wisely decides nothing can come of it and refuses all Marks advances.

She doesn't know about humans being True Mates .....

This book backtracks to some extent, filling in the blanks for Carol who is the Beta of her pack and who makes her first appearance in Book One of this series. Taking a human mate is problematic and the complications in their relationship are explored in greater depth here. That they love each other is never in doubt. But can Mark accept that Carol has hidden her true nature or the effect that their mating will have on his future? Another compelling Zena Wynn novel.

Actually, I really liked this one. I don't know if it was meant to be read before the others or not, but it takes place before the others.

It is Carol and Mike's story, which is alluded to in True Mates.

They were both young, and a little stupid, and it was perfect. I loved it. I loved how it was done with memory flashbacks. It worked really well.

First read many many years ago but length between books made me forget about this series.
Wonderful to find in Kindle Unlimited and see another book added.
Will be rereading and posting updated newer reviews.
Forgot how much full on sex was in these, nothing shocking today but still a lot of sex.
Whilst this is technically the first book, it was not originally written first. Now being in correct reading order in the box set, it will make much more sense.
Carol and Mark play a big part in future books and we kept getting references to their terrible and rocky beginning.
Now being able to read this at the beginning of the series, puts everything that follows into perspective.
Carol is a wolf shifter and meets Mark in college. Despite all her attempts to keep away from him, Carol and Mark start a relationship.
But Mark doesn’t know about shifters and the fact he is slowly turning into one himself.
Mark reacts very badly when told and is extremely nasty and demeaning to Carol.
Carol needs to accept a huge portion of guilt for procrastinating in not being honest and telling Mark what is happening to him.
All’s well that ends well as these two are True Mates.

Not bad. I enjoyed the story. But Carol got extremely distracted and woman up. Yea I said woman up. I should have said female up and told him before all of the distractions. And make him earn her back. Work and beg for it.

To say that I really have enjoyed the entire "True Mates" series would be an understatment. I almost didn't read this prequel because I thought I read enough about this two characters in the other books but I was wrong. A great series and I can't wait to read more. I wish the story was longer.

It was ok. The story seemed like one big flashback. I like all of Zena Wynn's books. This one neither added, nor took away anything. I have reread all of her True Mate series but won't be rereading this one.

Well that escalated quickly. I do get the need for the merging of past and present, but when you go from the past straight to a sex scene in the present you kind of get lost. The plot was good, I just wished she didn't start it off with sex right at the beginning.

Too much going back to the past and then to the present. Not my cup of tea. Besides didn't find the story to be that interesting, so I didn't completed the reading.
