Rue Volley is a seventeen year old going on immortal. Her mother Grace is in Rolling River Asylum, after she mysteriously stopped speaking to anyone. Her father William is now absent from her life. The only person she thinks she has left is her annoying brother Kai, who tries to kill her with his lack of cooking skills. Kai convinces Rue that she needs to be more social and drags her to a party at Johnathan Graphs house. Little does Rue know that because of this one small change in her otherwise normal routine, her life as she knows it will never be the same. Rue is about to find out that she will never die and has to make the ever trecherous decision of which hot boy she will spend eternity with. She wants Johnathan Graph, really, really bad but she needs Joshua Barrington, a boy who does nothing but annoy her death. One boy wants to kill her and one will die to save her. Suddenly, although she has lost the core of the family that she has known, she has gained a new family, who desperately try to help mold her into what she will become. Rue struggles to learn who she is as she navigates through a new world of beings that seem to want to own her or destroy her completely. This story takes Rue on a wild ride from her hometown of Calvary, Minnesota to the gates of the immortal city of Valon...the birthplace of her decendants...immortals who believe that humans are nothing but cattle. What do you eat when blood grosses you out, but that's all you think about? Everything is such a big deal, except death...OMG.

Where to start? I loved the story. Or maybe it was just Josh, but mostly it was the story, and Rue (the character).
The story starts with Rue acting like a normal book worm anti-social teenager. (Hello, Lori Parker 11 12yrs ago). <--- Don't do the math. I beg you, do not do the math!!!
Of course, she can like"flick" static electricty off of herself. Oh and her parents are never around, for various reasons, and her brother is a shitty cook. Ok, so her mom is in the mental hospital. That's a pretty legit reason for not being around. Her dad is working in the first few pages? I don't know. He's not home. Then he kinda gets sucked into...well I am getting ahead of myself. You don't need or want me to retell the story, do you?
Do you see where I am going here? This book was full of so many laugh out loud moments, filled to the brim with sarcasm and wit, and dark humor. I can't keep the sarcasm out of my review. It was like feeding into my sarcastic, dark humored soul. It was tasty.

The characters were all great and had their own, very 3D personalities. I was very much in love with a lot of them. But just Josh. Mainly.
The author built a funky and trippy new vampire world. It got confusing in parts but by the end I think I understood "the rules" for these vamps.
Some people don't like love triangles. I don't mind them. But I ALWAYS pick the guy the heroine doesn't choose. I hope for once I get it right. (TEAM JOSH not Johnathan).
I just can't express how amazing this book was!!!
However, in light of this being an honest review I will point out the things that tended to pull me out of the story. There were some major editing issues with the copy I had. Typos and awkward sentences abound. Sometimes the POV or tense would shift without warning. It got confusing at times. Obviously, the story was amazing enough for me to overlook these things (and I NEVER take off stars for editing issues).
The book was long. Like really long. Like this could be two books long. There is a certain point, right around the halfway mark that would have made a perfect ending to book 1.
Johnathan. I don't know why, but I cannot stand him. I'm sure he's great in an "evil, rapey" way but he does nothing for me. I spent a good portion of the book wishing he would just go away already. LOL. No this really isn't a sign of a bad book. It's the sign of an amazing story that was good enough to evoke this strong of a reaction from me!!!
Will I be reading book 2 and reviewing it here for all of you. Hell yes!
*Note this book is not a YA book. It falls into the New Adult category. There is strong language and lots of sexual situations.

Speaking of typos, can we count all the ones I made in this post. *facepalm* now you see why I don't take off anything for typos.

My Thoughts:
One of my favorite genres to read has always been vampires, but after awhile and you have read SOOO many vampire novels, you have to give the vamps a rest and try a new "outside your comfort zone" genre, so I have been visiting with some other friends like werewolves, faries, witches and even some shapeshifters and a whole lot of romance. Sometimes when you read too much of one genre they all seem to blend together and become not boring but just the same.

When I agreed to read this series the blurb of both books, something grabbed my attention and I thought I would re-visit my favorite vampire friends, hoping it would be different, I was not disappointed one little bit, and you will not be either. Most books I read have the ability to take me right into the story, to me that is a great book, some take me half way, but I love it when I read a book that takes me completely into a book from the first chapter and hold me there right until the very last page, and leave me totally shocked and surprised and wanting more RIGHT NOW lol. This was one of those books.

It was almost like I was right there living and feeling right along with all the characters, it was filled with laughter, magic, it was packed with action and I loved the love triangle that went along with it.

Now this is a two-part review as I have read the second book in this series as well so I will just keep going with my thoughts on book 2 Smoke and Mirrors.

I really wish we were allowed to give 10 star reviews on books because this one would be on the top of the list. I would love to pick thru Ms. Volley’s brain one day and see where she gets her stories to entertain us as she writes so many different genres for all to enjoy. This one I have to say out of all the books I’ve read of hers is definitely my favorite and I found myself up till 3 am reading it because I had to know what was going to happen. So move over all big named authors because Rue Volley is definitely going to take over the writing world for us since she has the knack to keep us entertained in all aspects of the writing world. She is a star that will shine over all of us. If her writing has you hooked, you should check out her artwork and her jewelry as well.
Rue sleepwalks and wakes with bruises. Her brother Kai is the comedian of a life time and can’t cook for the life of anyone in his way. Something is wrong, her mom goes missing and her dad disappears right before that. Sam and Josh have come to take over caring for Rue and Kai. Rue is discovering that she is more than just human. Johnathan is in love with Rue and he wants to be by her side no matter what. But there is more to him that he doesn’t know. The pull between the two of them is enchanting but can they control their feelings for each other? With Josh around though, Rue wants to dislike him but can she? Who will you fight for and protect no matter what? Welcome to a world of magic where looking into a mirror might be your biggest mistake.

I fell in love with the characters of this book! Ms. Volley has a great way of expressing her characters feelings and she takes you on a wonderful roller coaster ride of emotion through out this book. Don't read any more if you don't want spoilers! When the story begins Rue is almost child like but soon grows in her powers and knowledge and matures throughout the story. She falls in love with the handsome and charismatic Jonathon, but then there is Josh, who is snarky and fun and always in her face. She loves them both and thus a triangle ensues but it's hard to sort out your love life when the men you love keep getting captured and they are all constantly fighting for their lives. Blood and Light leaves you with little doubt that both men love Rue, and would sacrifice themselves to save her, the question is will they be able to before Rue saves herself? I look forward to reading book 2 in Ms. Volley's series to see exactly what happens next! I loved this book!

Gave up around 30%. The dialogue was juvenile at best, story-telling left much to be desired. The editing was atrocious. If you are comfortable wading through hordes of run on sentences (which were paragraphs long!), many misspelled words, and unedited books in general, feel free to give this a go. I found it distracted from the story enough that I just plain didn't care and was too aggravated to continue. I purchased the entire series at once, sadly I will not be continuing.

It started out slow, and I had to get used to the writing (it sort of annoyed me in the beginning how much the names are said!) I nearly gave up and moved on to something else, but then it was like flipping the page turned the light on and it got quite interesting... the further I read the more I didn't want to put it down. and then it hits you with a cliff hanger from out of nowhere! I immediately downloaded #2, Smoke and Mirrors. Can't wait to see what happens with Rue and Josh :) You can just toss out Johnathan if you want ;)

This first book in the series starts you on a journey that you will find hard to ignore and once you start reading you will be hooked...or perhaps bitten.
The Review
Wow what a fantastic start to a great series, I really cannot wait to read book 2, I loved every minute of it, Rue had me hooked, these Vampires are not normal everyday vampires, these are a different breed all together, I loved all the characters, they were so well written, I could not put it down, The fight scenes were stunning to read, I really felt like I was in the middle of them all, OOoooh Joshua Barrington, what can I say, LOVE him big time, but that’s just my opinion, although he may sway a few of you, I loved Kai he was so funny, This book kept you on your toes, with the constant twists and turns, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who love Vampires but also for those who fancy a little something different to read, I wish I could go higher than 5/5, it is so worth it

Every now and then a book comes along and after reading you tell yourself that you are so glad that you picked it up and gave it a chance to tell you a story.Rue Volley's "Blood & Light" just so happens to be one of those books. From the first few paragraphs you feel your are there living the book along with each compelling character. This book is perfect for those who love to have a novel take the...m through all types emotions, and those who love to actually feel what they are reading.
A wonderfully fresh spin on the vampire novel. It has a brilliant mix of humor, magic, swordplay and moments of action that not even todays films can match. I felt a great anime influence while reading this that kept me glued throughout. It is a story that anyone can pick up and enjoy.Rue Volley really has given this story a heartbeat and a sense humanity that will make everyone want to grow along with it's characters and envelop themselves in it incredible imagery.
This is a story that you will want everyone close to you to read, so that they may have the same sense of joy that you have had reading it.

Today's review is on Blood and Light by Rue Volley

Blood and Light is the first installment in Volley's Blood and Light series. I agreed to review this book based on it's summary and was looking forward to a new and exciting story. However, this 400+ page book was like an albatross tied around my neck.

Though the central premiss of the story is enticing, the story seemed to go on and on and on. The characters kept being captured over and over by the same group and ending up in the same places. Bor-ing.

Also, I know there is suppose to be a love triangle between Rue, Josh, and Johnathan, but I'm not really feel it so to speak. It's obvious that both of them are in love with Rue, but nothing really happens.

For a 400+ page book I either want to be so enraptured that I just CAN NOT put it down, or I want to be on the edge of my seat waiting to see what comes next. Blood and Light did neither of these things for me. The events in the story are to repetitive. Perhaps Volley should have broken this tome into smaller books instead of trying to write a "Twilight" sized book.

Was the Authors ....... key broken because I found it hard to read this book with the sentences randomly broken by a string of ...'s. And really why did she type with caps lock on when the characters were yelling, this made me want to stop reading and delete the book from my kindle.

So long. It just felt like a lot of unnecessary info. I lost interest. I did not know where the story was going. The writing style did not pull me in.

I am disappointed since I was excited to start this one.

I'm sure we all know tons of books about vampires and maybe, you are just tired of them. Well, don't be. Rue Volley, the author of this series, introduces us to a new kind of vampire. Forget the feeding on blood stuff, the "if I go out and the sun hits me I'll burn to death" and the "garlic and crosses are a big no".

The story begins with Rue, our main character trying to survive her brother's cooking skill (or the lack of it to be honest) and visiting their mother, Grace, who suddenly a year ago stopped talking and had to get into an asylum.
After visiting their mother Kai (Rue's brother) convinces her to go to a party and it is there that the story begins to develop... Jonathan, her secret crush, shows a lot of interest for her and after a few misunderstandings they go to the woods and start making out. But something weird happens and Rue is suddenly covered in flames, blue flames, and this triggers something in Jonathan who tries to hurt her.
Of course she is saved by a Protector. And what is a Protector, you ask. Well, this is the tricky part...
Samantha saves Rue and after introducing her to Josh (Sam's brother) reveals that Kai and Rue are not humans but Protectors too, just like their parents who are now missing. Protectors are vampires, but they don't feed on blood, they feed on energy (mostly) and they, a long time ago, used to protect people... but after an intern war caused by Caine some of these Protectors had to run away like Rue's parents, and the ones who stayed at Valon (their city) begun to feed on human energy.

But Rue is special and a very difficult destiny awaits her now...

What I liked the most was the love triangle "Josh-Rue-Jonathan", I mean, who doesn't want to be desired by two hot guys?! But I'm Team Josh, no doubt. He is sexy, funny, sarcastic and caring and he just knows how to tease Rue.
We also have a lot of funny situations with Kai trying to seduce Samantha (and most of the times she knocks him down)and Theodore (Sam and Josh's brother) who is... well, a very funny and special guy.

The only reason I don't give this book 5 cheeses is because the writing, at the beginning of the story, was a little repetitive but it improves after a while.

Hopefully I'll read the second book soon, I can't wait to see what happens next... the ending left me with my mouth open... and I need to close it soon!

This is the story of Rue and Kai. They are vampires, but don’t think they live in coffins or sparkle in the sunlight. They are from an old race that protects the world, protectors. They need energy to survive so they can brush up against people or drink their blood. They also can manipulate energy, which is a lot like magic, and can move super fast.

Because of the civil was between the protectors, the radical group that believes that humans are nothing more then cattle has been in power. Rue’s parents were part of the other side that felt humans need to be protected, like everything else in nature. The radicals have learned that Rue and Kai are the first born since the civil war and that Rue is even more special. They are trying to hunt her down to keep her locked in their private city.

Friends of Rue’s parents, Sam, Joshua, and Theodore, are trying to keep Rue and Kai safe. But Rue is also attracted to Jonathan, the grandson of Caine, the main bad guy that is intent on trying to find a way to have children. Rue is torn between Joshua, who irritates the heck out of her, and Jonathan, whom she will do anything for.

This story has great potential; I’m excited to start reading Smoke and Mirrors. I also admit that I hate giving this a three star rating, but I have to. The writing is a bit jumpy. I had a reread several pages to figure out what was going on. I also didn’t like that several characters had very similar names. When Rue kissed Joshua it took me a while to figure out that it was not Jonathan. Also, who was Sophia. One minute I see that name as Jonathan’s sister then I see it as the mother of Caine. I also couldn’t figure out the whole brushing up on people to feed when every where else they had to have blood to feed.

Beyond those minor annoyances, I would have given it a 4 star rating. It has a great new perspective on vampires. It is a good young adult story.

Thank you to Roxanne at Bewitching Blog Tours provided this story for review.

Four ½ stars

First I have to say, I am an author as well, and I already adore Rue Volley as a person, but I’m here to give a fair and honest review. Second, the edition I read has been edited, (for errors not content), and updated since I purchased mine some months ago. I’ll be uploading the newest edition ASAP.

I started reading this book after a long spell of editing my own work and beta reading for others. At the start, I had difficulty just reading because my inner-editor wouldn’t shut up! Halfway through the first chapter, something wonderful happened. Rue’s concept, characters and artful storytelling took over, and I couldn’t put the book down. I was SUPPOSED to build a website for an author friend. I was SUPPOSED to write a post for my blog. I was SUPPOSED to clean my house up and go to bed. Instead, I sat up all night and read. I had to know what happened next!

My inner editor isn’t easily overcome. I have what I like to refer to as WCD (writer’s compulsive directive), and typos or misspellings generally hurl me out of a book faster than poor storytelling. Blood and Light was simply too compelling to allow that to happen. The characters are realistic and multi-faceted. The vampires were a refreshing break from the typical bloodsuckers, and a far cry from sparkling or simpering. The world Rue has created is intriguing, and the plot moves forward at all times. If you haven’t read it yet, you’re missing something special. This is a book I’ll keep for my children to read in their teens.

Oh, and Rue, thanks for stifling my inner editor and allowing me to read purely for pleasure again.

This book begins with a slightly older Rue in a Mental Hospital. She has no memories and you journey with her through her time there while she tries to remember her past. There's many twists and turns. She leads you on many a path that will bring you back to where she began.
You also visit with many of the other characters from her first two books, their stories all interlock together into a magnificent story.

Rue Volley creates another book to her Blood & Light Series that leaves you wanting more!

I truly enjoyed this book, I had been looking forward to it after reading the first two books in the series. The stories in each book just pulls you in and you have to continue reading. Now that I have read this 3rd book I find myself already anticipating the release of the 4th book. Rue weaves an unbelievable story.
The characters are complex and easy to relate to, you get to know them and can relate though the story is so fantastical it's beyond most people's imaginations.

If your looking for something different, something imaginative and paranormal then this book/ series is for you. I highly recommend you read this series! You will not be disappointed and you'll have a new series for your keep pile!

5 Stars!!!!!!!!!!!

Rue is a 17yo girl, but she's not any normal girl, she has a shock coming to her.
KAI - Rues Brother drags her to a party, because she never gets out, she lives in her own little world But things are about to change. at the party she meets a young man called Johnathan, and the two hit it off straight away. while this is going on Rues mum is in a hospital not spoken for years but one night she speaks and say Rues in trouble. Right back to Rue, Rue and Johnathan are getting down and dirty lol, and something happens and Rue is covered in blue flames and something happens to Johnathan and he goes crazy and trys to attack Rue. but all is not as it seems.
Right im going to leave it there lol. yes I know I'm a tease but i really think you should read this book, it was so full of action and we all know I love my action. Rue has a wonderful talent for writing, her descriptions in her books makes you feel like your traveling along side the characters and I love to feel like I'm a part of the book. so guys please give this book a try, I'm sure you will love it.

Rue has been deeply alone for a long time and her brother just wants to see her happy so he decides to get her to go to a party. What happens next involves lots of power struggles along with uncontrolled attractions. If you are to read these books you'll become obsessed that is a promise! I'm reading Book 2, Smoke and Mirrors ( Need to get all the books!) and it's continuing some major energy charged and wickedly stunning fighting scenes. The Blood and Light Vampires are unlike any you'll ever meet. Rue, the main character is witty, at times shy, but really kick-ass. Big fan and of the cute and pretty boys involved in the story. There is so much happening because a situation can change in a moment's notice but you'll be wishing for more.

First off. I do believe I have an old copy.
Some editing etc in my copy is needed. This has since been rectified and I am happy to report that editing etc is not a problem in this new copy.
That being said....
The start of Rue's story gripped me.
The author did an amazing job in describing the loss a girl feels as she loses a parent.
I loved this part.
This is not a typical book and for that I am glad, a bit too sexy for me though. I know, I know, I am the only one in the world that would say this but it is true.
My post title.... I am glad I got past my reluctance to read this book. After having read hundreds of books reading another vampire book simply did not have the appeal I wished.
Once I started though, met Rue and her love for life, her complex situation etc I felt my reluctance being replaced with a page turner attitude.

ok so this book is 400 pages long but to me it only means you are getting more for your money! A fab read that most definatly should not be split up, rue will definatly become known as an author whose books could stop a burgler at 20 paces. No one is getting up after having one of them thrown at them.....

The story itself is great and doesnt relay on sex to get it through which is quite a difficult thing to achieve in your average sized book. Thourghly enjoyed this book and cant wait to read the next.

This is quite well written, despite the editing errors. It's good value for a YA read, but I had issues with the repetitive nature of the novel which made it a slow read and boring. The precept of the story is good, but I don't think it's for me, and I suspect I will never finish it.
