An exclusive hotel on a tiny picturesque island seems to be the ideal retreat for Hercule Poirot from the stresses of criminal detection. But with the appearance of the beautiful Arlena Stuart, the quiet and peaceful atmosphere becomes charged with an indefinable erotic tension. And when she is found viciously strangled in a secluded cove, there are few, especially among the women, who seem to feel either surprise or regret.

As Poirot follows a twisting path of bizarre and bewildering clues, his only certainties are that the solution lies within Arlena herself, and that there is evil under the sun.

About the author

Michael Bakewell (7 June 1931 – 11 July 2023) was a British radio and television producer and radio playwright.

His work included adapting The Lord of the Rings (with Brian Sibley) into a 1981 radio series for the BBC and a series of 27 adaptations of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot stories broadcast between 1985 and 2007 by BBC Radio 4.

He was born in Birmingham, England. After graduating from Cambridge in 1954, he was recruited by the BBC's Third Programme. He became the first Head of Plays at the BBC in the 1960s.

Most of the BBC adaptions of Agatha Christie's books are fantastic. The acting in them is superb, and the direction from Enyd Williams is wonderful. Let alone, John Moffat's portrayal of Hurcule Poirot? Fuggedaboutit.

I will repeat this in other reviews, but there is something great about the Christie novels when either Poirot or Miss Marple are abroad. For some reason, I kind of feel like I'm on vacation with them. Or maybe I just need to get out more.

Regardless... I love this one.

Well dramatised with appropriately accented characters with sound effects adding to the story. A full cast including Monsieur Poirot acting as host of the narration providing brief introductions recapping the storyline to each segment.

Poirot is uncharacteristically holidaying in Devon, southern England. Poirot, perfectly situated for observing guest interactions, conversations and any murderous activities proves helpful when one of those guests is discovered dead. . .

This is a very good dramatisation of one of the most popular Poirot books by Agatha Christie. The story is well performed and the cast is well chosen, with voices distinct enough to be immediately recognisable, even in the early stages of the story when it’s easy to get lost.

This BBC Radio version simplifies an already simple plot by Christie standards and remains a satisfying mystery. Some great character observation really lifts this story, such as the fact that it’s not men who are drawn like magnets to Arlena, but Arlena who is drawn to handsome men. It makes you speculate on her role as victim and challenges the mysoginistic concept of a femme fatale drawing men to their deaths.

A quietly subversive story as told with Christie’s flair for detail and the BBC’s flair for nostalgia and old fashioned murder mystery.

Entgegen seiner Überzeugung, wagt es Poirot Urlaub in England zu machen. Natürlich ist er enttäuscht, das Wetter ist miserabel, genau wie das Essen. Immerhin ist die Gesellschaft soweit interessant. Da ist Arlene, eine ehemalige Schauspielerin, die mit ihrem Ehemann Kenneth Marshall und der sechzehnjährigen Stieftochter Linda Urlaub macht. Nur bedeutet Urlaub für Linda, diversen Affären nachzugehen, denn die Männer liegen der verruchten Schönen immer noch zu Füßen, was ihren Mann anscheinend kalt lässt. Besonders Patrick Redfern hat sich in Arlena verguckt und vernachlässigt dabei seine eher unauffällige Gattin, eine ehemalige Lehrerin. Des Weiteren machen Horace Blatt, Reverend Stephen Lane, Major Barry, Miss Emily Brewster und Rosamund Darnley, eine erfolgreiche Geschäftsfrau, die sich für Beruf und gegen Familie entschieden hat und eine gute alte Freundin von Kenneth Marshall ist. Natürlich dürfen die die obligatorischen Amerikaner nicht fehlen, die in England Urlaub machen, hier sind es Carrie Gardener und ihr unterdrückter Ehemann Odell.
Wirklich interessant wird der Urlaub für Poirot eigentlich erst, als Arlena tot an einem entfernte, einsamen Strand aufgefunden wird. Sie wurde erwürgt. Nur von wem? Von einem ihrer Liebhaber? Von einer gehörnten Ehefrau?

Erneut ein sehr gut umgesetztes, stimmungsvolles BBC Radio 4 Hörspiel mit John Moffatt als Hercule Poirot. Der Fall ist verwickelt, verzwickt und nicht so einfach vorhersehbar. Voller falscher Fährten und Finten. Man sollte nicht alles für bare Münze nehmen, was einem die Personen so erzählen.
Was diesen Fall jedoch anstrengend macht und zu einem Punkt Abzug führte ist, dass viele der Sprecher zu ähnlich klingen. Normalerweise achtet der BBC darauf, die Personen charaktergerecht und mit möglichst unterschiedlichen Stimmen zu besetzen, hier jedoch klingen einige der Rollen so ähnlich, dass ich echte Schwierigkeiten hatte, die Personen zu unterscheiden. Zudem sind auch sehr viele Sprecher und Rollen in diesem Hörspiel, die einen Überblick am Anfang zusätzlich erschweren, da sie fast alle im ersten Teil auf einen Schlag eingeführt werden. Wenn man das Buch nicht kennt, ist eine Orientierung unter den Figuren also recht schwer, was zu zusätzlichen Verwirrungen bei diesem Fall führt.
Ansonsten sind alle Sprecher sehr gut, keiner klingt abgelesen, die Soundkulisse ist stimmig und man verzichtet, wie bei BBC Hörspielen meist üblich, auf nervigen Hintergrundsoundtrack, wie er bei vielen deutschen Hörspielen so beliebt ist.

Fazit: Ausnahmsweise sollte man das Buch vielleicht kennen, damit man nicht den Überblick über die vielen Personen verliert, die teils sehr ähnliche Sprecher haben.

Das BBC Radio Play von Evil under the Sun ist kurzweilig und unterhaltsam. Es ist wie ein Film, nur ohne Bilder. Wellenrauschen und Möwengelächter schaffen die Atmosphäre eines englischen Sommers auf einer Insel vor der Küste von Devon. Die Swing-Musik zwischen einigen Kapiteln versetzt auch noch in die damalige Zeit.

Hercule Poirot mag ich nicht besonders, in den Büchern klingt er affektiert und arrogant. John Moffatt schafft es aber, ihn nicht unsympathisch wirken zu lassen und hat dazu noch den genau richtigen Akzent. Sehr gut gefiel mir auch der schottische Schauspieler Iain Glen als Patrick Redfern.

Der Plot ist wie alle von Agatha Christie formal perfekt und das ist gleichzeitig seine Schwäche. Es ist alles darauf angelegt, das Rätsel zu lösen. Alibis werden aufgeräufelt, Uhrzeiten verglichen, alles ist viel zu kompliziert ausgedacht und das Motiv für den Mord steht im Hintergrund. Deshalb sind auch die Personen in ihren Büchern beliebig austauschbar. Die Krimis von Agatha Christie sind wie eine Tageszeitung, einmal gelesen, abgehakt und darum kann man ihrer auch schnell wieder überdrüssig werden.

Poirot is on holiday at an isolated Devon hotel set up on a smuggler’s island. Heads turn when the beautiful actress Arlena Marshall arrives and is clearly carrying on an affair with Patrick Redfern in front of her husband and his wife.
When Arlena is found strangled and alone in an isolated cove, Patrick is the main suspect, but he has a cast iron alibi.

These are sooo good. I read the paperback weeks ago, and these productions are fantastic at editing the story down to a few hours.
Of course it was Iain Glenn as Redfern… I should know that voice anywhere.

Again, they are too clever at editing these into radio plays.

I enjoyed this BBC radio dramatization just a bit more from the previous ones I listened to because I haven't read or seen its movie adaptation. So I was puzzled and fascinated by it. I love beaches, I love resorts and this audiobook had plenty of it, hooray!

This is an eaudio version of the book. I would have to describe it more of a audio play than an audiobook. The PBS tv show is much better than this dramatization. Still a good listen just not what I was expecting.

Lots of fun, and well acted. I've had one or two experiences with Poirot before (the classic movies of Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express). Love it.
