This was one of those reads that completely pulled me in and didn’t let go. From the first page, it felt like stepping behind the curtain of a world I already thought I knew, only to realize I hadn’t seen the half of it. It struck this perfect balance between being packed with insight and still reading like a fast-paced thriller—it had that addictive, edge-of-your-seat energy but with the depth of a well-researched nonfiction dive.

What really surprised me was how much detail was layered into every chapter. It wasn’t just a companion piece—it peeled back the layers of the original story, unpacking the symbols, the hidden meanings, the real-world connections behind the fiction. Everything from Masonic influence to American history to obscure references I completely missed the first time around—it all clicked into place in a way that made me want to revisit the original book with fresh eyes.

The pacing was spot on. It never dragged, never got bogged down by info-dumping. It delivered just enough context to make each connection feel like a revelation without over-explaining or talking down to the reader. Honestly, I felt smarter reading it—not in a pretentious way, but like someone handed me the keys to a hidden library and said, “Here, let me show you the parts you missed.”

It also added a new layer of appreciation for how much research and myth-making went into the original narrative. The blend of art, architecture, religion, and symbolism came together so seamlessly that it genuinely felt like a treasure map disguised as a book. I loved that sense of wonder, that feeling of being drawn deeper into a puzzle that’s been hiding in plain sight all along.

This was the kind of book that reminded me why I love diving into companion pieces and literary deep dives. It didn’t just fill in the blanks—it amplified the entire experience. Clever, illuminating, and just plain fun to read.

A decent, even-handed and sometimes entertaining account of Blue Lodge masonic practices, despite a couple of clangers e.g. The Grand Orient of France did not admit women in 1877; that was the year they dispensed with the need to believe in a supreme being. Women were only admitted into certain GO lodges a few years ago, and that only when one of their number had a sex change. The duties of lodge officers differ from obedience to obedience but Gittins steers a reliable middle course. Worth reading.

A shameless cash-in on the back of Dan Brown's Lost Symbol. To be fair, it has a decent stab at explaining the history and ritual of Freemasonry, without twisting the poignard to make anything more controversial than actually exists. This lack of sensationalism though makes me suspect it will disappoint both masons and non-masons alike.

An excellent book, especially for those readers who have not been members of a Masonic Lodge.
Having been a lodge member myself, it lost some of its impact for me, on the same basis that after leaving the town where my lodge was located, I did not join another lodge. That was because the myths were more exciting than the actuality.
A lot of the author's time is spent pulling down Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, but that should be expected from this 'truth v fiction' works.
This is a good book which clearly dispels the myth and thoroughly illuminates the truth.
Almost a text-book for those searching for knowledge, but a little less for those who read to be entertained only.

For centuries Freemasonry has been the subject of rumor, intrigue, and conspiracy theories. In this easy to read book, the author attempts to separate fact from fiction. By delving into the likely true origins of Masonry, its philosophy, practices, and rituals, the author does a fairly decent job of separating the facts from the fiction. Also, the author includes a list of famous Freemasons (i.e. Buzz Aldrin, Mel Blanc, Samuel Colt, Davy Crockett, Roy Rogers).
