François Cheng is a French academician, writer, poet and calligrapher. He is the author of essays, novels, collections of poetry and books on art written in the French language, and the translator of some of the great French poets into Chinese.

Born in China and taking French citizenship in 1973, he was elected to the Académie française in 2002, and was the first person of Asian origin to be a member of the Academy. He was the winner of the 1998 Prix Femina for Le Dit de Tianyi ("The saying of Tianyi")

When Cheng arrived in France in 1948, on a study grant, he did not speak a word of the language. He subsequently adapted quickly and profoundly. In his speech to the Académie française, he explained, "I became a Frenchman in law, mind and heart more than thirty years ago [...] especially from that moment when I resolutely went over to the French language, making it the weapon, or the soul, of my creative work. This language, how can I say everything that I owe to it? It is so intimately bound up with the way I live and my inner life that it has proved to be the emblem of my destiny." It took many years before he became a novelist. His first works were on Chinese poetry and painting. Later he began to write works of poetry himself, before finally turning to the writing of novels.

Excellent adaptation of oral reflections by the author. Poetic, evocative, yet well focused. The author's style seems to have been influenced by Bachelard. Cheng's perspective will be particularly appealing to readers who enjoy etymological explorations, in this case thoughtfully contrasted to explications of corresponding chinese characters. (The "talks" seamlessly incorporate western and Taoist insights.) This little book already is a valuable addition to my collection of works on the theme of beauty.

This is the second book I've read from Chinese/French author François Cheng. This title is a non-fiction book on beauty. The author met with other French intellectuals to discuss about beauty; then he wrote down his reflections from that discussion. The meditations on beauty are more theoretical in nature than practical. There are well developed thoughts that are too intellectual, too philosophical and too abstract to be remembered and attract the interest of readers.

A very beautiful and seriously inspiring and thought-provoking read... Like others have said, a fascinating east-west exploration, very well laid out, and a dense content but which was so interesting it prompted me to take notes as I went along and not hesitate to dip back a few times over and reread certain passages before moving on. Well worth it, because as clarity seeps through, your eyes and mind open up, big style...

A book I savored. Cheng stands between two traditions of art: China and Europe. He interweaves ideas exclusive to each together to produce a work full of poetry and wisdom. One understands through reading the book how much and how deeply Cheng has looked and observed in life and art.

This book is extremely complex and has an intense philosophical thread throughout. It becomes more complicated as each meditation proceeds, but overall it is a good and insightful book. What I liked best about it (though it was a little difficult to understand sometimes) was that Cheng really makes an extraordinary and clear bridge between the cultures of "the West" and "China" which is symbolic of "the East." In today's world crossing the cultural barrier is extremely important and to understand beauty in different perspectives is one way to start. He viewed them as separate at times, but intrinsically linked and I appreciated that outlook on this book.

It is not something I would pick up to read for fun again, but perhaps something I will come back to as a reference, especially the first three meditations, which I felt were the best of the five.

100% satisfecho.

This book is inspiring in many ways. It is also, in many ways, a religious book, and therefore has many baseless claims. The fact of their baselessness though, does not make them less valuable necessarily. I didn't agree with everything in the book, but I still learned a lot from it. If you read it, expect a lot of Taoism.

First philosophy (philosophy adjacent ?) book that I’ve read and it was a lovely discovery. Particularly liked the first Meditation and the reflections on the role of nature. Appreciated getting to dip back into Chinese language and philosophy but found the more spiritual arguments a little harder. Really beautifully written.

ENFIN !!

This is a short book, but one which I struggled with. The meditations come across as spiritual, but in a way that feels detached from life as we/I know it.

I don't think I understood a single thing that I read...This merits a reread some time in the future when philosophy is less elusive to me...
