That's a very good point, but don't forget that most of the things that people 'knew' about each other were usually incorrect. Like Miss Stephanie's 'knowledge' on Boo Radley, or the children's for that matter. Also, in the black and white film, the children have strong southern accents, whereas Atticus has an English accent and there is no mention of this in the book. Possibly a hint from the producer about the true meaning behind Atticus' words?
