She is "tanned" because that is her natural skin tone/color. She doesn't have a tan because she goes out into the sun alot. That is just the way she is. Rule number one, book covers lie. There has been a lot of controversy about the face that publishers keep whitewashing covers. Because they believe that covers illustrating that the main character is a POC won't sell. So you have the main character of the book series looking nothing like the cover. Then you got fans only thinking about what the cover looks like and not how the character is described in the book. If you have noticed, that the first vampire academy cover at least for the US version looks nothing like how Rose is described. She doesn't look tan to me at all especially if that is what you were planning on going by. The VA graphic novel seems to be much more suitable to Rose's appearance. Zoey Deutch is just another white girl. She essentially has the same kind of look that Bella, Elena, Lena, and others have. Jeez, even Katniss and she is supposed to be olive toned too. That seems to be what they are going for. Oh please, money talks alot with authors. Alot of authors have been willing to change their stance on these types of issues especially if they are getting paid big time. Are you sure it isn't because Mead also realizes that they are going to keep Zoey regardless of what she says? If she wants VA to be a big hit, she can't go against what the directors want and start badmouthing them. If she says that Zoey doesn't look like how she pictured Rose to fans, alot of them won't want to go see the movie. Whitewashing is so an issue in this case too. Just because you don't see it or don't want to see it doesn't mean it isn't. It doesn't change the fact that others see it very clearly.
