Genes are protein makers, so if we do things that are inherently bad for us, they make bad proteins that can harm us. Richard Dawkins wrote about "The Selfish Gene" i.e., our genes are not loyal to us, but have evolved independently. I have often said, "Genes are our blueprint, not our destiny." Good health and a better, happier life are things we can achieve by our actions.
