The tragedy of the spider!! Also loved that part. We watch the animated movie a lot in our house (we have a three year old) and I appreciated how Schmendrick is so much more of a schmuck in the book. He goes through a real character transformation in a much more profound way than the movie. I just read this for the first time last year and your review is on point!
I've never seen the movie, but I'll try to do so sometime soon-ish. I've heard good things about it.
