'Through Forests and Mountains' is my second novel published by Penmore Press in Arizona. I was adopted as a baby and my birth mother came from the former Yugoslavia. In the 1960’s, my adoptive mother told me stories about the female Yugoslav Partisans who had fought alongside the men, a story that has captivated me ever since. 'Through Forests and Mountains' recreates the timeline by which these women became involved in the struggle against Hitler, and why they spoke of their time with the Partisans as ‘our most beautiful days’ (Batinić, 2015). That said, I am well aware, as a Christian, that so many contemporary novels promote atheism and are generally scornful of a belief in God. I was determined that mine should be different, and I took every opportunity to write my historical novel from the viewpoint of a living faith.

Finally, the trees parted until he could see the whole of the Milky Way above him, so glorious in its vast silence that he could only gaze at it in amazement, though he had seen it many times before when it tremored above the pulse of the waves. He was reminded of the widow's milking shed where he had battled death and won, and he sensed again the child in the manger and fancied that he, too, was following a star.
‘We haven’t risen up against the occupiers yet,’ said the priest. ‘But we will.’
‘We?’ A ticklish wind whispered across the old stones of the chancery. The priest rubbed his back and Anton rubbed his shoulder. ‘Aren’t you too old to be fighting?’
‘You don’t know your scriptures, son,’ returned the priest smartly. ‘Wasn’t Moses eighty when he the led the Israelites across the Red Sea?’
‘I don’t know. Was he?’
‘“Arise! Let us go back to our people and to the land of our birth, because of the sword of the oppressor.”’
‘Moses said that?’
‘Jeremiah.’
At sunset, they dug a grave for Aleksandra in the thick of the forest. Mara and her friends stood with Nikola and Boško as they laid the young girl in the friendly earth like a child at bedtime, and tucked her up with leaves.
‘Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny, ’said Mara. ‘And not one of them will fall to the earth without your Father’s knowledge. Of how much more value are you than the birds.’
How the words of Christ exhibited an understanding of nature! In the same way, there was not a death, nor a poem, nor a thought that did not link the Partisans to the natural world.
