When i asked my American Lit. teacher Mr.Watson under what critical school he taught he said Cultural criticism. "In our American lit. class under the theme or the idea of the American dream we discussed many of the cultural issues that either impede or inspire american upward mobility or is decline." Some of the textual evidence that we used in class where plays such as The Crucible, A raisin in the sun, & The great Gatsby. The crucible dealed with religion & political beliefs that is because within the play it dealed with the Salem witchcraft trials and how the whole town was opposed to witchcraft. So they would take them to trials and execute them if the town thought they where practicing witchcraft. On A raisin in the sun it dealed with ethnicity and dominant vs. dominated cultures. This play was about an African american family living in the south side of Chicago during the 1950's. They receive some money for the fathers death and the wife decides to buy a house in a more peaceful neighborhood of all white residents. The president of the neighborhood council had made the family an offer to rethink their decision and not move into the neighborhood. Here they where dealing with issues where whites are the dominant culture and African americans are the dominated because whites think that they can bribe minorities into doing what they want in their communities.
Along with many others i think that Gregor's dad is one of the characters that had a major shift in their lives. At the beginning he was not playing his role according to society because a man is suppose to be the foundation of the house providing for the family, but not him right after Gregor started working. he would put all the financial responsibilities on Gregor's back, still controlling the money though. "the same man who would lie wearily, buried on his bead,...Now, however, he was perfectly erect, dressed in a tight blue uniform..."(Kafka 37). So now after Gregor isn't able to work he has taken the responsibility of taking care of the financial needs and this time he doesn't just control the money now he has to earn it as well. here he transformed by being a lazy person and just laying around and pushing everything on his family to someone who has to work and put up with his responsibilities as the man of the house.
I think that kafka is trying to show in metamorphosis that women are portrayed as worthless. He is saying that either women don't have financial power and if they do then it's low and does not meet to men standards. That just for being women then your job is not as important as a mans job and that they don't deserve to get much money off of it. "Even in the course of the day the father already laid their entire financial situation and prospects before both the mother and the sister"(kafka 28). Here he is saying that he's controlling the finances. Even though women can work they wont get much money and does not meet to what a man would make. He is also trying to say that men are the ones that keep a house stable with the financial situation. This is how society has portrayed men and that's how every household should be where the men are supporting the house financially.
I agree with Marekjavorek because kafka uses everyday realistic events and everytime he jumps right into action. He never explains the begining of the stories or how it all started always right into the action. "...he foubd that he had been transformed in his bed into an enormous bug"(kafka 11). here in the beggining of the story he is starting right in the action just like a regular person would just that adding some fiction to it which makes it modernism literature.
the fact that he is now a bug and is treated differently would he bring his hopes up and try to become someone in life or is he going to lower his self esteem and believe all his life that he is good for nothing?
I agree with Joe Ms.Mallard at the beginning of the story felt depressed because her husband had just died.I dont think that she felt entrapped because if she did then she would have been happy after her husband had died. most women if they feel entrapped in their marriage then they would be more than happy knowing that they wont have to go through that every day anymore.i also think that divorce might not have existed if the story says that she might have felt entrapped then she had to stay with her husband no matter what happened.
I think that Obama becoming a president was a great thing for America. Even though this is a big change and something new to America its going to work out well. I think that this is going to open doors to many people and their ways of thinking about things as well, especially to the minorities. I also think that he would be able to put up with his expectations because, like he said its not going to be easy but slowly he would bring this country back on its feet. As Americans i think that we should support what he says because everyone thinks that magically from one day to another everything would be back to normal, but it all takes time and we have to be patient and contribute to the actions.
I think that the girl is from Jamaica. Her mom is talking to her and telling her to become a good women. I think that the girl is pregnant. I also thought that her mom was telling her mom to not go with a lot of men because she can get a bad reputation for her actions. If she gets a bad reputation then when she wants to get with a guy, he wont want her because of her bad reputation.
