107940 I've reviewed it, so I'll head over on Monday and add my link, and read your review :)

107940 I agree, I think the worldbuilding was top notch. I wouldn't say that this is my favourite ever book, it is quite slow, which is not a bad point, just that it took a while for the main story to get started. In fact I don't think the "main story" started until Geder made his way to the temple, but I enjoyed getting to know the characters so I won't complain too much about that :)
107940 I went and bought the second book as soon as I finished this one, but I do have a few books I need to get into first, online courses and book club reads.

I really hope we get to know both Kit & Marcus more, and I'm looking forward to getting a better insight into Clara's character as well.

107940 I think I like Marcus and Cithrin the most. Marcus obviously feels the clichéd warrior with a past, honourable but a mercenary. Still he does really try :)
Cithrin I think is making a lot of practical decisions that will come back to haunt her. But what else could she do really?

Dawson I dislike, mainly because of his attitude to the servants, other races, and slaves. But at the same time I have to respect him because he is an honourable man trying to do the right thing.

Geder I'm sure has plenty more surprises for us.

107940 I agree, the path is both a physical road, the jade road, and a saying that means you are heading for destruction.

107940 I totally agree. It's very hard reading some of his opinions, comparing people to dogs and saying that everyone had the place and they better make sure they stay there.
I do hope he will cop on a bit but honestly I don't see happening. He is a total product of his class and society and nothing I can see at this stage will convince him he is wrong.

107940 I think it's great. often in fantasy novels the political world is looked at very closely but the economic aspect are ignored. In reality the political and the economic are so closely linked that both need to be shown. Even in an unchanging feudal type society economics and trade pay a huge role in the power games so it's nice to see it make an appearance here

107940 I hope I'm not jumping in too soon, but I just finished this section and I have to say I am so upset with Geder!
I can sort of understand why he reacted that way, he has been bullied for so long he felt he had to strike back but talk about going too far. Way too far!
107940 I'm enjoying it so far. It is very traditional fantasy epic so far, with the worldbuilding and the medievalesque setting, but it is well told and not too derivative. Looking forward to seeing how it develops.
Interesting idea with the 13 different races, seems somehow like someone, or something, experimented with the "Firstborn" genetically to create the other 12.

107940 I agree that the apostate is most probably Master Kit. The use of the "probably" sealed it for me :) And his knowledge of when someone lied, look at his reaction with Cithin said her name was Tag.

As for the characters I'm most drawn to, well I do like Cithin, but I think that Marcus and his tragic backstory are the ones gripping me :)

I do like Geder as well though.

107940 I'll probably be a little late answering the questions, getting married on the 11th, but I'll certainly be around for week 2.
