I dove in this week and have now read the first chapter of Against the Day. I haven't found the need to look up references for the most part (thankfully, as I had no internet access) so it's been easier going than I thought. Am I missing references? I don't doubt it, but it's not hampering my ability to follow. Of course, ask me in another 900 pages if I managed to keep the characters straight...I'm loving the energy Pynchon brings to his writing. Happy to be on board this airship.

Then again, I've heard pretty much all of his novels recommended as "the best place to start"! That must be a good sign.
Hi everyone! Looking forward to this read but also intimated like many of you - I'm a Pynchon virgin but I've been advised to start with this one by a friend whose opinion I trust, so here we go!
