176380 I dove in this week and have now read the first chapter of Against the Day. I haven't found the need to look up references for the most part (thankfully, as I had no internet access) so it's been easier going than I thought. Am I missing references? I don't doubt it, but it's not hampering my ability to follow. Of course, ask me in another 900 pages if I managed to keep the characters straight...

I'm loving the energy Pynchon brings to his writing. Happy to be on board this airship.

I hope it's not just a mean trick ;)
Then again, I've heard pretty much all of his novels recommended as "the best place to start"! That must be a good sign.

176380 Hi everyone! Looking forward to this read but also intimated like many of you - I'm a Pynchon virgin but I've been advised to start with this one by a friend whose opinion I trust, so here we go!
