Hi, I'm afraid I can't either as up in Aviemore for a week. Since I don't think the Romans came that fat north!? I thought I could be excused reading a Roman book too! 😂 See you all next month. June
Hi,Can't remember who it was that had read Margaret Atwood's The Heart goes last, but just to say I really enjoyed it. I really enjoy dystopian novels and loved the dilemmas that the characters had to endure. Not sure I actually liked any of the characters at all, but that didn't take away my enjoyment of the story.
On the subject of dystopian novels, on my way out of the library last night I picked up The Boy on the Bridge
which is the second book by the author of The girl with all the gifts and it is set in the same world. Think some of you have read The girl with all the gifts, so I'll let you know what I think of this one.June
I have read Last Rituals in the last month from this list. Really enjoyed it, especially with not long coming back from Iceland. Liked the main characters enough to want to go on to the second book. I'm about to finish the first book of another Icelandic crime writer.Reykjavík Nights: Murder in Reykjavík
Not sure whether this writer is as good as Yrsa, though I may still read the second one in the series so I can compare!
June :)
Hi Elvine,Your thinking is correct! We can read a book on travel and talk about it next month. I'm about to start mine! June
Hi everyone, I too enjoyed last night and have now increased my massive reading list to even more massive! Lots of the books sounded so interesting. Looking forward to Laura's list!
Elvine, I too really enjoyed The girl with all the gifts. I particularly liked the ending. Will give The boy on the bridge a go when I can!
Thanks Laura, I put a request in for it and it's waiting for me at the library. I'm down south for a funeral but will pick it up later on in the week. June
Hi Nicola,I managed to somehow post this twice. If you look at the other post, Elvine has said the book is Present Tense by WHS McIntyre.
Laura is currently organising the reading group at Larbert Library so if you want to come along she is the one to contact. ;)
Hi,Was wondering if anyone else in the book group has read the above book? I really enjoyed it, mainly because it is based around the Junta in Argentina in 1970s and the 'disappeared'. It was a topic I knew from news as a teenager, but the book really brought it to life following a family trying to locate their daughter and her fiance. Learnt so much about that time.
So recommend it.
June :)
Hi Laura,Sounds like a good idea to me. Would maybe need to wait until more people joined the group and got used to it first?
June
Hi Elvine, I love all his books. His new one, Kill Someone, though has taken over as my favourite just because it really got me thinking. Do anything, really stuck in my mind too. Most of his books are really quick reads. I think the longest one is the Stone Man. I just really enjoy his ideas. Judi, I think we will all be in agreement with The Sellout!
Laura, I'll be putting back His Bloody Project tomorrow morning so hopefully you can get to read it at last!
I have managed to get about a third of the way through The Sellout. Determined to finish it but it's so pretentious!! Laura you will love His Bloody Project!
I have the sequel on order from the library. That was the one the Radio two book club was talking about. Think it follows what happens to Lovelace. Had great reviews.
My friend and neighbour gave me Vinland by George Mackay Brown. She knows how much I love Orkney! I'm about a quarter of the way through, took me a while to get used to his style and sometimes it feels a bit like a history lesson but I think I'm quite enjoying it! Steve, my husband was given one of his other books so we can swap once finished!
