Yes! There were so many things like that. I wondered many times how he was so specific in some of those kinds of details. The only thing that I didn't catch was the connection to the German characters that he told about throughout the book. The actor/director lady for example. He kept telling about her, but I kind of was expecting more resolution or something from that. And maybe there was and I kind of missed it since I was listening to it on audiobook.
I read Little Women a few months ago and forgot to put that on here as my book that is more 100 years older than me. It was published in 1868. And I loved it!
My book involving a sport was The Boys in the Boat. I had been wanting to read this for a while and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love books about history and people. And this was a fascinating read!
For my book in this category I read Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda. And I loved it. I so enjoyed learning about the culture of India through this well told story. Would definitely recommend.
I just finished my book with a blue cover. It is a book that I've been wanting to read for YEARS. I finally did it and I loved it. :)
PLUS!! I just read from another reviewer that this book was based on an actual person!! A lady in Idaho that lived about this time (late 1800's) named Mary Hallock Foote who was a famous artist of the time. Apparently the author even went so far as to quote some of her actual letters as his own writing in the book! With no acknowledgment whatsoever. Isn't that blatant plagarism??? And this book won the Pulitzer? Sheesh!
Yes. It wasn't really a page turner....but since I was listening to it on overdrive I didn't have to bother with turning the pages. ha. I just let it play on and on and on.....and on as I folded my endless laundry. But I could have forgiven it for being just simply boring and long. But I actually found far too many incongruences with the plot and characters and it had no point and it even made me mad sometimes. So unfortunately it got 1 star from me.
I just finished the book "Angle of Repose" by Wallace Stegner. It actually fits into 2 of the categories for me: award winner and book set in home state. Since I had a hard time finding books set in Idaho (What?! This glorious state needs more books! haha) I decided to count it as that. The whole book isn't set in Idaho, but about 1/3 of it is I'd say. And that's about as good as I can find! All of that being said.....I didn't really like this book. ha. So too bad for me and Idaho. ;)
I decided to read To Kill a Mockingbird as my book i haven't read since H.S. I know I read this book about 20 years ago in HS....but honestly didn't remember much about it at all. Most of the books I read in H.S. are a blur to me actually---though I did get good grades in English I don't think I cared too much about the books we read. Probably like most teenagers. But mostly I think I just didn't have enough life experience to appreciate what I was reading! So reading this again was so much more memorable this time around. I know enough, now, to appreciate this amazing book--how the author told this entire story through the eyes of a young girl and how poignant that was. How the reader both knew what the girl was witnessing was wrong---and yet how innocent she was to it all. What amazing writing! I also loved Atticus so much as a parent. As I was reading and going through my own parenting I kept thinking, "how would wise Atticus handle this situation?" haha. It's true. I loved his integrity and wisdom and strength. A great book. I guess I took HS English 20 years too soon. haha.
Kristen are you from Galveston? Our good friends and neighbors here are from Galveston. Last names: Smith and her maiden name is White. haha. Just realized as I wrote it that those are probably too common of names to make a connection.....ha, oh well."Howdy pardner, you know any Smiths from Texas?"
"I reckon I do....."
I was a huge Sweet Valley fan back in the day too! haha! And as far as the Good Earth, I loved it too. We read it in our bookclub a few years ago and ever since I've thought so many times about that amazing chinese woman and how she gave birth and the next day was out working in the fields like nothing ever happened. incredible.
Awesome! Thanks! I'll see if I can find it on overdrive. I'm loving audiobooks lately. Can listen and be entertained while doing laundry, dishes, etc. And it motivates me to clean since I want to keep listening! My house has never been so clean. haha.
Bossypants was good. She had so many funny thoughts. I was distracted too much by all the crudeness (language, topics) of it though---so that's unfortunate. Harry Potter was so fun to read! I mostly listened to the audiobooks which are truly amazing. Jim Dale is the man.
I finally finished the Harry Potter series!! I didn't love these books, but I liked them very much. The characters and storylines were just so fun to be a part of the past little while. And now I'm ready and excited to exit Potter-World and see what else there is out there! I just got Bossypants by Tina Fey from Overdrive and started it today. This will be my book by a comedian. There has been some crude language so far.....but besides that, pretty funny. Has anyone else read this?
I finished Harry Potter 5 yesterday. And while I am trying to get through them all this month (because my bookclub is reading Cursed Child this month) I needed a Harry Potter break. So I downloaded Wizard of Oz from Overdrive and listened to that today and am counting it as my book about travel. :) Ya know because Dorothy and her gang travel along the Yellow brick road.....that counts right? (and I just realized I went from one Wizard book to another......So I must be in a wizardry kind of mood. Ha.)
Ok I keep messing around with it....Anyways, I just made an example shelf with my name to put books that I've read for the challenge. So, we could make shelves for each member of the group to put the books they've read. Or if we want to go all out we can have 3 shelves for each person (currently reading, to read, and read) anyways, someone better stop me before I take over goodreads. And the world!!!!! hahahahaha
Ok, I just put on the Harry Potter book on the currently reading bookshelf to see how it would go. I guess it comes up in the feed. Do we want that? Anyways, I am fine with whatever you want Sarah, and everyone! :) Just let me know and I can take it off, or we can add more!
Hey Sarah, and everyone else too. I was clicking around and saw there's a place we can put books on bookshelves for this group. That might be a fun way to visually see what everyone is currently reading, wants to read, and has read as part of the challenge? Or we can each make our own shelf in there and just put the books we've read on there. And we can all see them and stuff?
Anyways, what do you think?
