The use of religion was a bit odd. It would flip-flop between using religion as good, and then bad. I mean, in real life, all religion has aspects of both, but I didn't get the idea that that was what the author was going for.
The book is really good. It's a little mysterious in the beginning, but has a ton of action, and questions what makes something "alive". I just watched the movie, and it's pretty good! Glenn Close is brilliant in her role, and the girl who plays Melanie does a very good job, considering what her character has to do.
