Some things, like a harmless bird in this case, create joy and deserve our protection so that it can continue to create joy. Protecting children so that they can safely reach adulthood is a forgotten them in this book (and movie adaptation). Mayella could not safely reach adulthood due to her abusive father, and no mom. Scout did and was able to re-tell this story.
