233974 Oooohh, I had that song stuck in my head for hours the other day. Which is weird, because I was not watching that particular musical, but was watching a different one....

233974 I'm still working on The White Rose and Fair Winds - though The White Rose is taking all my attention now. It's shaping to be the debut - hoping the beta call will go out this fall sometime.

233974 Awesome idea, Julian! Pity I didn't go to RM this year, otherwise I'd probably join you!

233974 OOhhh I may be able to help! I'm a historian by trade (though I will admit, the history of courtship is a little fuzzy for me).

In most cases, chaperones weren't "required" until courtship actually began. Although ladies of a genteel nature typically didn't leave the house without an escort of some kind - either another lady or a servant, or a brother/father. The latter was done for safety reasons.

There are documented instances of young people sending notes to one another asking for visits or letting the other know where they would be in order for them to "pass each other along the way."

Have you read any of the Scarlet Pimpernel series? The latter books deal more with the Terror and love affairs. While they are fiction, they may give you a better idea.

If you want a good rule of thumb, have them be in places where people can see them (living room, street, etc.). Also, reputation was a big thing to worry about during that time period (even during the Revolution).

If you want a research topic, try looking for courtship during the American Revolution. I know it's a little earlier than the time period that you're writing from, but it may give you a general idea of what the norms were in those kinds of situations.

233974 Thanks, R.M!

I've heard of World Anvil, but haven't played with it much. Mostly, I've been relying on Melissa Gravitis's Questions to Ask series, which is super helpful for me.

Wrote another 1k+ today! Starting to flesh out a wee bit of the conflict and action, but stayed mostly exposition today. Gotta start somewhere, right?

233974 A new snippet for today:

“Who is the Blue Star this time, another distant relative?”

Tobais sighed. “No, it’s one of my sisters.”

Ealdread raised his eyebrows, both at the fact and Tobias glum tone. “Indeed? Dare I ask which one?”

A brief pause spoke volumes before Tobias’s voice did.

“Magda.”

“Magda??” Ealdread couldn’t keep the surprise from his voice, or from his feet from stopping. “I thought she would have been in a courtship of her own already.”

Tobias sighed again. “The problem is that Magda enters into one flirtation after antoher. If there is one thing that drives away a virtuous man, is a woman chasing him.”

233974 Dear me, I haven't shared a snippet here in a bit....

Here's one that I wrote on January 3 from my "villian's POV":

Absently, she picked up the pitcher of water and proceeded to pour it. But instead of hearing a cresending flow, she heard a steady stream that was accentuated by dripping. Looking down hurridly, she say that her cup had been upside down, and she was pouring water over top of it - which was now running to the floor, wasted.

In consternation, she banged the pitcher down and hunted for a small rag to clean the floor. It was not easy to find the water again, as it was growing darker by the minute. How could she have been that stupid as to not see that her cup wasn’t receiving the water?

233974 I'm picking up writing again this month on The White Rose. After a 440 word count day, I was shocked to discover that I had broken 30K words!

This work is getting bigger and bigger....and I'm really really stoked to see this little baby start to grow. *squeals*

233974 Don't worry - I've struggled using the app myself, Julian. Welcome to the team (again, LOL) and I can't wait to see what this new year holds either!

233974 Interesting persepective - seeing the younger sibling's POV after an older sibling flies the coop instead of the other way around. Awesome job, Gray!!!

233974 *dissolves into a puddle of feels*

233974 I found 2 books in the YA section of my library that I can recommend:

Fires of Invention by J. Scott Savage. This is a fantasy/steampunk book about kids trying to save their state from an outside threat using creativity and invention, which have been outlawed.

Sir Kenderick and the Castle at Bel Leone by Chuck Black. Perfectly clean Christian allegory set in a medieval type world. Highly recommend!

I also found Rangers Apprentice by John Flanagan at the library too, but that one has some language in it.

All of these have been reviewed by me, in case you want to see my thoughts and RW ratings for them!
