Emma Deplores Goodreads Censorship’s comments from the Read a book from each country group.

Sorry to see that the recommendations themselves were deleted. Anyone remember what they were, or have any others to add?

Four Reigns. Chronicles the life of a Thai woman from the late 19th century until right after WW2. Not a lot of plot but really engaging all the time, and it has great cultural detail.

I second The Blood of Flowers especially, and also The Septembers of Shiraz.

The Harmony Silk Factory by Tash Aw.

Following the Wrong God Home by Catherine Lim. (She has several other books too and is quite popular in Singapore I'm told.)

The Poisonwood Bible also takes place in Congo, although the author isn't from there.

Absolutely loved The Seamstress by Frances de Pontes Peebles.

I quite liked the Mernissi suggestion, even though it's more of a memoir and I usually read fiction. Also published as The Harem Within.

La novela de Peron and La Tierra del Fuego. Or something by Florencia Bonelli if you're in the mood for some romance.

A third vote for House of the Spirits. One of the best books I've ever read.

Things Fall Apart. A classic.
