2779 Four Reigns. Chronicles the life of a Thai woman from the late 19th century until right after WW2. Not a lot of plot but really engaging all the time, and it has great cultural detail.

2779 Following the Wrong God Home by Catherine Lim. (She has several other books too and is quite popular in Singapore I'm told.)

2779 I quite liked the Mernissi suggestion, even though it's more of a memoir and I usually read fiction. Also published as The Harem Within.

2779 La novela de Peron and La Tierra del Fuego. Or something by Florencia Bonelli if you're in the mood for some romance.
