I enjoyed Dark Horse
and the series: Class 5. I believe they fit your request, although I wonder about the romance/tech balance... but I think they're worth checking out. : )
I also finished
recently. Great read and a definite 'dangerous hero' book (as was
, the first in the series).

Have you heard of
? I recommend it, along with everything R. Lee Smith has written. Also, there are several book lists for 'villain as hero' or similar. Good luck. : )
You may want to check out this Goodreads list: Villian Gets the Girl. I'll be following to see new recommendations as well. : )
Hi Cindy (et al. : )). I'm kind of 'just a lurker' but I wanted to thank you for participating. It's really interesting to read about these behind the scenes aspects, the writing process and so forth. Great thread.

I've read a few from the genre and liked them, I think, despite the Steampunk aspects. O.O It's just not my favorite 'built world' but I can get into for an otherwise great book.

Hi Pet. I see you have Stacia Kane's Unholy Ghosts on the TBR pile. That is a great series to take the edge off. Be warned, however, it's not done either (although there are five books and some novellas thus far). Enjoy. : )
Thanks for the heads-up Christine. It was a great idea but all the stores in my area are sold out (a very nice clerk just called around for me). Bummer!
Ideally, I'd agree with Justina but series tend to be spotty sometimes, as far as quality. Also, some authors are better at making their series books standalones as well. As I said, I simply picked and chose among the Dark Hunter series. I read the first full book first (Night Pleasures) which I thought was fairly good (although not a particularly dangerous hero). I think the next I read was Night Play (Dark-Hunter, #5), as I mentioned above. I would definitely recommend it (not a dangerous hero either but he was great). I didn't bother me at all that I had skipped although at the beginning it mentions that the H/h met in a previous book. Then I went back and read Dance with the Devil which was pretty good (I think it was #3). I said what I thought of Acheron (blech). Have a few more on the tbr pile but like some of you, not thrilled.
The Immortals After Dark series, on the other hand, was great almost book for book.
A Hunger Like No Other
is a very good book. Hero is actually fairly dangerous to begin with. I have my favorites in the series but they are all good. I bought a Lords of the Underworld bundle for Kindle and only read 1 and 1/2 of three stories but other people seem to love it.
Lol Peep. Well, I guess you didn't like it much more than I did. I can imagine that the Dark Hunter series get repetitive. I skipped around also. I think Night Play (Dark-Hunter, #5) was the best and I DNF'd the .5 book.

I just recently read Acheron and I thought Kenyon completely ignored the fact that it had been 12,000 years between the time of the matters you're referring to and the time of the H/h interaction. Imagine what a (ahem) god must have seen and experienced in that time (v. aprx a 12 year period in his early life). I just think the character could have had more gravitas.... something like Raphael in Singh's Guild Hunter series.
