The Mundane World- Odysseus' mundane world is when he is on the island of Ogyia, with the goddess Calypso, Calypso tries to make Odysseus love him, but he never does. The island is perfect to an ordinary man, but Odysseus dosn't feel like he belongs there, he wants more, he wishes to be with his wife Penelope and his young son Telemachus.
The Call To Adventure- Odysseus' call to adventure takes place while he is on the island of Ogyia with Calypso. The call to adventure comes to Odysseus when Hermes travels to the island of Ogyia to tell Calypso that Zeus demands the release of Odysseus from Calypso and the island. Calypso disagrees but says he can leave if he wants, Odysseus dosn't go at first but then decides to take on the adventure.
Crossing The Threshold- Odysseus crosses the threshold because he decides it, as in some heros journey the hero has no choice. He crosses the threshold by deciding to leave the island of Ogyia, he builds a raft, and starts sailing home towards to Ithaca.
Path Of Trials- New Challenges: Odysseus' ultimate challenge is when he gets trapped in the Cyclops' cave with some of his crew. He cannot kill the cyclops then and there or his body will block is way out of the cave. So he comes up with a risky plan and gets his crew together and blinds the Cyclops, finding a way out.
New Mentor: Odysseus' new mentor is the witch, Circe, who lives on the island Aeaea. She may have trapped Odysseus and his crew at first, but after Odysseus lives with Circe for a year because she seduced him, she is more of a mentor when he leaves the island to continue his journey. Circe warns Odysseus about the Sirens and advises him to put earwax in his ears and his crews, or have his ship destroyed by the rocks. She also advises him to beware of Sylla the sea monster, Circe tells him to keep going, to not stop and fight for there will be no victory if he does, Circe shows all signs of a mentor towards Odysseus by advising him.
New Knowledge Odysseus learns new skills on his adventure, one of which is to not let your pride take over, if so, it could lead to loss. When Odysseus discovers the Cyclops' cave his men suggest taking the cheese and goats, but Odysseus wants to stay and meet the Cyclops, thinking that he can stand against anything, which leads to some of his crews deaths.
New Enemies: Odysseus' enemy was standing against the Cyclops, although the Cyclops is powerful and stronger then Odysseus, the Cyclops is very dumb. Odysseus can't simply kill the Cyclops as he might with any enemy for if he does the Cyclops' dead body would block the entrance to their escape, which is a challenge to Odysseus.
New Skills: Odysseus' new skills are overcoming the Cyclops by outsmarting him. Odysseus comes up with a plan to get the Cyclops drunk and then blind him, after they will hide under the sheep so the Cyclops will not feel them escape. Also, Odysseus lies to the Cyclops and says his name is Nohbdy, so that the Cyclops will say that nobody tricked him when he calls for help to his neighbors. So Odysseus new skills are strategy and planning.
New Friend: Odysseus' new friend is Circe she may be evil at first but she helps Odysseus in the end by warning him of his enemies of the sea to make sure hes safe.
Master Of Two Worlds- Odysseus becomes master of two worlds when he returns to Ithaca to his wife and son. Escaping all enemies on his journey and overcoming challenges that only a hero can overcome. When Odysseus returns home he is truely different from who he was when he took off on his journey, learning to not let pride take over and discovering new experiences.

53499 The first line in Joseph Campbells quote from The Power of Myth "We have not to even risk the adventure alone, for the heros of all time have gone before us." tells the reader that someone has already taken the risks of that adventure, that someone has already experienced it, that that individual is not alone. "The labyrinth is thoroughly known." tells the reader that everyone knows the beast that awaits at the end of the journey. "We have only to follow the thread of the hero path." says that there has already been a trail laid out, and an individual must follow that path. "And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god." means everything isnt as bad as it seems, there is good in the end. "And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves." tells the reader that hurting one another will effect everyone, it will hurt everyone. " Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to center of our own existence." tells the reader that instead of trying to learn about the world, the important thing is to learn about ones self. "And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world." is telling the reader that everyone takes the same journey.
This quote tells the reader everyone is on a journey in life, a very similar journey.
This quote relates to mythology because mythology often tells storys of a hero on a journey in life. The quote is about the journey one must take in life whether a hero or not. This quote is very true, life is a journey that everyone must take, along with challenges. In the end one finds who they truly are.

53499 Charles Dickens shows archetypical characters in his novel A Tale of Two Cities, making it relevant to a modern audience. Archetypes are shown in the past, as well as modern times in literature. The character Madame Defarge reflects characteristics of the villian archetype many times throughout the book.Charles Dickens describes Madame Defarge as a ruthless woman (pg.281). Throughout the novel, she does not stop to help others, she shows no compassion, and she doesnt care about the innocent people she harms, as long as she gets what she wants. These characteristics are those of the villian archetype.
Many novels in modern times show characters reflecting the villian archetype. There are even novels in modern times that show violent characteristics such as violence.Madame Defarge also reflects the villian characteristic of violence. She shows violence many times throughout the novel. Villians show violence to get what they want, just as Madame Defarge does when she pulls out a gun on Miss Pross, (pg. 287). Madame Defarge would be selfish and violent by killing innocent people, just to get what she wants.
Madame Defarge shows that any book, written in any period of time, can be relevant to a modern audience through archetype, such as A Tale of Two Cities does.

53499 The novel A Tale of Two Cities is relevant to a modern audience in many ways,it shows the reader the villian archetype, shown in the character Madame Defarge. Archetypes are shown in modern times as well as historic times in literature. Madame Defarge reflects the villian characteristics by being selfish and ruthless such as the villian archetype. The author Charles Dickens describes her as ruthless, shown on page 281 when she is walking the streets after speaking with The Vengeance. "There was not one among them more to be dreaded than this ruthless woman, now taking her way along the streets." The author describes her as ruthless, showing no pity or compassion toward others. This example shows that Madame Defarge embraces the villian archetype by being selfish and ruthless.
There are more characteristics of the villian archetype than selfishness, being selfish is just one in many. Madame Defarge also reflects the villian characteristic of violence. Villians show violence to get what they want, just as Madame Defarge does when she pulls out a gun on Miss Pross, demanding to know where Lucie Manette is on page 287. "Soon Madame Defarge's hands ceased to strike, and felt at her encircled waist." This shows Madame Defarge attempting to strike Miss Pross to get what she wants in a viloent, villainous way. This attempt leads to Madame Defarge's death, as all violence leads to death.
So yes, A Tale of Two Cities is relevant to a modern audience, it shows archetypical characters such as Madame Defarge. And you can find archetype usually in any literature and text throughout many different periods of time, such as A Tale of Two Cities.

53499 (Michal) An archetype is a pattern or theme that recur in different texts across an extended period of time. These patterns are seen in myths, literature, movies,T.V, folklore, dreams and rituals. In literature they are found in the use of character types. One archetype is the general male archetype, the characteristics of the male archetype are conquering and providing. Men need to provide for their fdamily, they feel its their duty to take car of the ones they love instead of the other way around. They also have the need to conquer, men want to conquer their emotional feelins, you usually see the female archetype crying instead of the male archetypye, this is because they feel they need to conquer it. Suzanne Collins made the character Katniss Everdeen embrace the male archetype instead of the female archetype in the fantastic book The Hunger Games.
Katniss Everdeen shows sign of the male archetype multiple times throughout the novel, When Katniss' little sister is crying for her to not go Katniss shows that she wants to conquer her emotional feelings: "This is upsetting me and I dont want to cry. When they televise the reply of the reapings tonight, everyone will make note of my tears, and I'll be marked as an easy target. A weakling. I will give no one that satisfaction." Katniss does not want to be seen vulnerable like the female archetype, she is conquering to hold in her feelings. Katniss also shows the male characteristic of providing:"I swing my legs off the bed and slide into my hunting boots." She goes out hunting in the woods to bring home food and provide for her family.
Suzanne Collins made Katniss reject the female archetype and embrace the male archetype, by conquering her feelins and providing for her family, there are many more examples of the male archetype in Katniss in The Hunger Games.
