I loved Stoner - and other works by John Williams. You should read Augustus (not For the USA book list) and Butcher's Crossing (Kansas and Colorado). He is just terrific!
For those looking for a wonderful read about Montana, please look for Black River by the incredibly young S.M. Hulse. Quiet, intense and beautifully written, beautiful in place, this novel has it all and is similar to Kent Haruf's lovely works. I don't want it to end.
It was terrifying, Suzanne. But I find many of Roth's novels to be so - especially American Pastoral. Nemesis all about polio during the summer of '44 - the silent scourge that was so horrible and inexplicable - while such a destructive war with the enemy was in full swing overseas. We think we live through difficult times now. But I can't imagine the sheer terror that reigned back then due to this horrible disease that seemingly at random, took so many lives and left so many more crippled, especially children.
For New Mexico and Colorado, another good one is Peter Heller's The Painter, which I'm finishing now. Art, love, loss and moral ambiguity all roiled into one.
For a good story set in Texas, I recommend Ruby by Cynthia Bond. Incredible story, but not for the faint-hearted.
Another question for anyone who has read The Glass Castle. Which state would you classify this book under: Arizona or West Virginia?
Does anyone have a good recommendation for Nevada? I have on my "to read" list, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Ox-Bow Incident, but if there's something more recent, I'd be happy to change things up. Thanks!
Great book. Nothing happens, but everything happens, if that makes any sense. Plainsong is one of my favorites.
Back in Brooklyn/NYC finishing The Suite Life, the second novel in Suzanne Corso's trilogy. A fun, end-of-year read!
Thank you, Jenny. I tried posting my list per the advice given on the site via the "personal file" and can't seem to do so. Just thought I may be missing something here. I can be very dense when it comes to tech-y issues!
Oh, I'm currently reading We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, which is set in both Indiana and California. Fun reading, so far.
