Stephanie Meyer and her clones have spent too much energy making the vampires sparkly and werewolves buff to bother to make Bella a strong character.
Okay right you guys have got a lot of wrong books here and to name a few, City of Bones? Clary can be annoying but in a way you're meant to see her as annoying until we see her from Jace's point of view and see how brave she is to help the people she loves. Hush, Hush? yeah Nora seems a little dull but then Patch comes along and she feels alive, she acts better because she starts to take her walls down. That's what books are about, Twilight deserves to be here because none of the characters develop (especially Bella) but in probably a lot of these books they do. Maybe not the way you want them to but did anyone want Sirius to die in Harry Potter? Or any other great examples? No, but the author decided that it happened, it's their world they can do whatever the hell they want and we can't do squat. So stop complaining and get on to reading books you do like instead of trashing ones you don't but others do.
What is Last Sacrifice doing in here? Rose is awesome, badass, witty, funny, gorgeous, strong and well she is a bit bitchy and selfish and uncaring sometimes (**cough**ADRIAN***TRAGEDY**COUGH), but she doesn't deserve to be in this list.OH , and Clary may be a bit too whiny but she's awesome but apparently nobody in the books notices that nor does the person who put city of bones in this list!
this is just my opinion!!
Oh, NO! not another hate Twilight list. Can't you people think of anything else besides your hate?
yes i agree with some of these heroines, espesh Bella Swan, but why is Clary, Rose, Katniss, Nora, Tris, Grace, Luce, Tally and Beth on this list??? All of these people either a) know how to kick butt or b) are tossed into a world they have no idea about and try to make the best of the situation, and do so exceedingly well!!! Why are they on this list??? Yes they need their "boyfriend's" help because they have no clue what they are doing at the start, but as the book continues, they actually get better and better and are actually very strong, realistic, occasionally annoying (but what character isn't?) and perfectly in sync with the book. Without those characters, there wouldn't be any book to read!!! Say what you want, but the books which have the characters that I have just listed are some of my favourite books ever, mainly because of those characters!!!
TheOneAndOnlySam wrote: "yes i agree with some of these heroines, espesh Bella Swan, but why is Clary, Rose, Katniss, Nora, Tris, Grace, Luce, Tally and Beth on this list??? All of these people either a) know how to kick b..."Clary, Nora, Luce, and Beth are annoying as shit.
I haven't ready any of these books, but I know that Hilary Clinton is a bit of an old witch, so I voted for her.I suppose that I have, technically, read Romeo and Juliet, but it was in school, and under duress.
Who made this frickin list? Okay 1 some of these books are actually really good. To whoever made this: Grow up, and keep your hate to yourselves. This isn't fair. I suggest you read all of these books again with a more matured outlook. Put yourself in the character's shoes and redo this list.
I can never understand why people these days like picking on successful writers, singers, actors. Although some of the listed books were not my favorite, I don't think it's very mature to make a list like this. It's bullying in my opinion.
*GASP!!!!!!!!!!* HOW DARE YOU!!!!!!!!!!! WANDA (THE HOST) IS ON YOUR WORST FEMALE CHARACTER?!! WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE?! FREAKING BLIND!????? DONT BE SUCH A PREJU-FREAKING-DISTIC JERKS!!!!!!!!AHHHHHHH!!!!
Looking for Alaska? Seriously. The way Alaska is portrayed is intentional because it's how Miles sees her at first. It's about learning to see people how they are instead of idolizing them.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What!!! What is going on here????? Some of these are my favorite books of all time!!!!!!
Just Listen. Seriously? That was a complete surprise for me. Well, the fact that Annabel did not go to the polcie or her parents or anyone did bug me but she had to go through a lot. I personally think that Ruby from Lock and Key was waay more sucky. Well atleast there is no Macy Queen here.
I just think you're one of those people that can't appreciate a good character. I mean, pretty awesome role models are on here! So what the heck? I mean, seriously, Hunger Games? She sacrificed herself for her own sister! FIRST VOLUNTEER OF DISTRICT 12, EVER! Just . . . no. And what's with the hate on these girls? How about you just make a nice list of the characters you like, save us all a little happiness?
Jemma wrote: "*GASP!!!!!!!!!!* HOW DARE YOU!!!!!!!!!!! WANDA (THE HOST) IS ON YOUR WORST FEMALE CHARACTER?!! WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE?! FREAKING BLIND!????? DONT BE SUCH A PREJU-FREAKING-DISTIC JERKS!!!!!!!!AHHHHHHH!!!!"I totally agree! Wanda is so nice and kind to everyone!!!!!

WHAT IS BLOODLINE DOING HERE!!!! WHY IS SYDNEY IN THIS LIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????
What if the female character is supposed to be repulsive? What if the author intends for us to hate her? I believe that is the case with Steinbeck's East of Eden (98).I'm a bit baffled by the hate for Hermione.
Nora is by far the worst. She's so stupid that Hush, Hush should have been titled How to Get Yourself Raped and Murdered.

I read the books, and hated them from the start. And people can hate what they hate. Just because you like Twilight doesn't mean everyone does.
Nic wrote: "Oh gosh I agree with you! Probably every hate list on this site has Twilight on. Sad thing, most of those who voted, either never read the books or they did love it once!" I'm sort of part of that group. I absolutely loved the first half of the book. Then he was sparkling, the romance was suddenly sappy, the conflict completely disappeared, and I was bored to tears for the second half of the book. Completely turned my attitude about the book around. Does that invalidate my opinion because I liked the first half? Absolutely not.
Gotta love people who comment on "worst of" lists to complain about the existence of "worst of" lists. Go find other lists that suit you better if you don't like them. And Hannah (#17), don't be ridiculous. Criticizing a book is not "bullying." Books are products that are put up for sale, and readers have every right to discuss them however we see fit. Frankly your use of the word demeans anyone who's ever actually been bullied.
this list is actually ridiculous because there are many books listed here in which the female character is actually really strong
Aj wrote: "I just think you're one of those people that can't appreciate a good character. I mean, pretty awesome role models are on here! So what the heck? I mean, seriously, Hunger Games? She sacrificed her..."That was her shining moment, in my opinion. The rest of the book is unrealistic and Katniss is either completely dull and robot or thinking about Gale vs. Peeta. And I agree with whoever put Clary and Bella up here - they're just whiny and wait for their boyfriends to save them.
This list is not for people who like these books, stop getting all offended because somebody's opinion differs from the current bandwagon!
I find it funny that about a third of these female leads are the strongest and most kickass female characters I know.

I apologize. I did not mean to offend anyone.
I don't get why Juliet is on here - she is a little bit of a wimp but definitely not a worst female character. Give her break, she's only thirteen.
Cassie wrote: "What i want to know is if these books and heroins are so bad what do you people consider good?!?!"I agree, some of these are quite controversial.....
Harry Potter? Really people? In this book there are tons of amazing female characters who are really worthy and you put them with Bella Swan? ( weakest female character for me but I really enjoy Twilight).Who ever created this list has to reread many of these books on this list and update it.
I'll never understand the hate on Bella. She's down to earth, she's independent, yes she spent her college fund on a bike, but it was her money, she never asks money from her parents and she cooks. Her boyfriend asks her to not see her best friends and she doesn't obey and she is in forks because she wanted her mother to be happy. I agree that in New moon she was too mopey, but I see the entire series there, not just new moon. I don't get it.

What is Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Graceling, Shadowhunters, Looking for Alaska, Hunger Games, Twiloght and half of this list doing here????????????????
I love this list. I voted for all the insipid, simpering little twits I have encountered in badly written fiction. The only drawback with fiction is the fact that I can't bitchslap them the way they deserve.
This is for everyone whining about why their favorite book is on the list, why their favorite character is on the list, and why people are so "hateful".LoveChica99 wrote: "Who made this frickin list? Dear LoveChica99
I know this was written almost 10 years ago, and I assume you have grown since then, but in case you haven't
- You can see who made this list. The people who voted. That list is below the list of books.
- this is an opinion. Don't take it personally. Opinions don't need to be fair or mature or PC.
- You don't need to agree with everyone on this planet. Everyone on this planet is not going to agree with you. Just because something is written down on a list, it doesn't mean it's a fact. You can't disagree with facts, but this is an opinion, which means that you can disagree. This means that if you don't think the heroines on this list are the worst female characters of all time, you don't vote for the book. If you think this list is bad or wrong, you don't vote for any books on this list. Go make your own list of best female characters of all time, and you'll have a lot of people agreeing with you.
- Adult people do find fictional characters annoying. Adult people can "hate" things. With passion. Even more so than non-adult people. It's not a question of maturity. It's a question of being a human being. I'll save my "maturity" to interact with real people. Because, if you don't know, these people are imaginary. They don't exist. They aren't real. They don't have feelings I could possibly hurt. They are figments of the author's imagination. And the authors are adult people, who know not everyone is going to like their characters, and that people can experience their books in a different manner than they intended, and that's OK because they know themselves they don't like every book ever written, nor every character. And might be that they would never criticize the characters or the books the way people criticize their books, but it doesn't matter, because people are different, and you don't get what you give.
- Read these books again? Never! I can tell you it won't make me see them with more compassion, on the contrary. There is this "look at that bitch eating crackers as if she owned the world" mechanism hardwired in the human psyche, which means that the more time we spend with people we find irritating, the more faults we find in them. I read the first six books with Clary, and she made me hate everything Cassandra Clare ever writes. Interestingly enough, it's the same thing with Bella and Sarah J. Maas heroines. I can't stand heroines who are supposed to be so brave and selfless and amazing and wonderful and kind and all that, when they are never shown to do anything brave, selfless, kind, or other things like that. the only reason I "know" they are, is because every other character in the book keeps telling me that. I can't stand heroines everyone in the book loves, except the villains, who hate them. For no reason at all. I can't stand heroines who magically have all the skills necessary to reach the goals they set for themselves. I can't stand heroines who take no real responsibility for their choices and actions. They take "responsibility" only for what is convenient for the story the author tries to tell, and that only to show us how "brave" and "selfish" the character is. These characters usually just decide to do something very stupid that becomes a plot problem, without talking to anyone. Like when Bella went and "sacrificed" herself to save everyone from the evil vampire. And so on, and so forth. I could write essays about why these characters are bad.
- Consider the fact that the purpose of art, like literature, is to create an emotional response in the consumer, and when people hate these characters, the author has managed to make the reader react strongly. Well done. Now, if the author was smart, they wouldn't just rest on the laurels of their popularity, but learn from the criticism, and stop writing marysues, show more, tell less, create more layers and depth, develop the side characters more... well, every character, etc. None of this will take anything away from the author's style and voice, or the stories they want to tell, on the contrary.
So... maybe YOU need to reread every book and try to see the POV of REAL people - the readers who find these characters annoying - and consider the very real emotions and reactions of REAL people over fictional characters, instead of what you are doing now?
Order of the Phoenix is on this list for a good reason: Dolores Jane Umbridge clearly was meant to be loathed for her cruel, racist, and abusive behaviour. She got her comeuppance in Deathly Hallows for pretty much everything she had done. After the Second Wizarding War, she was imprisoned for life in Azkaban for her crimes against Muggle-borns.
