Paul Jones Voted. But I'm not telling you who for :)

PAUL
Author of Towards Yesterday

Robert +1

message 3: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Paul, your book sounds really interesting. If it ever gets published in hardcopy, I'd like to know.

message 4: by Kim (new)

Kim I've voted but not for Brooks or Eddings (read those) and not for Moorcock (can't stand his work)

Agreed... my iPhone fails to let me know properly :(

message 6: by ♥Xeni♥ (new)

♥Xeni♥ Also, Howl's Moving Castle was nominated. Anyone want to read it with me anyway? It'll probably be really fast and fun, since it's Diana Wynn Jones after all!

Kim ♥Xeni♥ wrote: "Also, Howl's Moving Castle was nominated."

I might be reading it for July in another club I'm in :P Waiting for that poll to end. If it doesn't win that one I'll read it next month.

I'll read it if you are. Happens to be one I own and I haven't read it recently. :)

Edit: Did you see Diana Wynne Jones just died like less than two months ago? :(

message 9: by Katie (new)

Katie Voted (:
And for those who can't read the titles with mouse-over:
They are:

- Piers Anthony - On a Pale Horse
- Terry Brooks - The Sword of Shannara
- Guy Gavriel Kay - The Summer Tree
- Mercedes Lackey - Arrows of the Queen
- David Eddings - Pawn of Prophecy
- Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman - Dragons of Autumn Twilight
- Micheal Moorcock - Elric of Melniboné

OMG, I know! I cried a few tears for her. :( I was so so so devastated when I was told. Gosh, I just love her Chrestomanci!

♥Xeni♥ Qylie wrote: "Xeni have you seen the movie?"

Actually, yes. My little sister is a HUGE anime/manga fan and shoves that 'art' at me all the time. And thus I have seen Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, that one with the girl and the bathhouse... yeah, I've been a bit edumacated in that area xD They're not too bad... they just really really stretch my imagination with their artwork!

I should read the rest of the Chrestomanci books sometime. I've only read one (Charmed Life it must have been) but it was really good. Just never got around to the others.

message 15: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon (last edited May 19, 2011 11:15AM) (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon I've read HMC before, but it's been awhile and I've been thinking of doing a reread, so I'll try to fit it into June to join any discussion that might happen. I'm a bit booked up from other groups, though, so I'll see how it goes.

Also, while I love the movie, the book is very different.

(As a side note, I dislike closed polls.)

message 16: by Qylie (new)

Qylie I love all those !! Miyazaki ROCKS! You should watch Ponyo! The bathhouse one is Spirited Away, I love that one too.

message 17: by Bluelily3 (new)

Bluelily3 I voted for Dragonlance, because it's one of my favorites. I love Shannara and Valdemar too, so it was a toss up.

I think it's randomized, because they're definitely not in the same order for me and change places every time I click "change my vote"... :/

Andre Boradicus wrote: "Where is the poll???? I vote Elric of Melinobone` by Michael Moorecock"

You're on the poll page. Just click the picture of the book you want. If the pictures don't show up, then I don't know what the deal is. I too would prefer the text-based version.

message 21: by Kara (last edited May 21, 2011 08:56PM) (new)

Kara I've read a lot of these, but have been meaning to pick up the Elric Saga for a while now. I'm a lil nervous b/c I've never read anything by Moorcock, but we shall see.

♥Xeni♥ wrote: "Also, Howl's Moving Castle was nominated. Anyone want to read it with me anyway? It'll probably be really fast and fun, since it's Diana Wynn Jones after all!"

As a side note: I LOVE Miyazaki's animation works (don't forget Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind!), and actually ALSO have HMC on my to-read list, as I was more curious in the book the movie was made from. Please keep me in the loop if people decide to read it.

message 22: by ♥Xeni♥ (new)

♥Xeni♥ That's how I feel, Kara. I'm interested to see if the book is at all like the film!

message 23: by Andre (new)

Andre ♥Xeni♥ wrote: "That's how I feel, Kara. I'm interested to see if the book is at all like the film!"

I've read it already, and I can tell you that there are major changes in the plot. I won't spoil anything else now, but if I remember right, the book's plot made a lot more sense than the movie's because it explained things better. I'm sure I'll have more to say on that when we actually read it.

I also love Nausicaä. :) The movie really brought the manga to life, I think. I haven't seen or read that in years though...maybe I should find a copy of the movie again.

message 24: by Brett (last edited May 23, 2011 02:16AM) (new)

Brett Hmmm...I nearly always read a book before or if I see the film version. Sometimes I won't even watch the film. My imagination is better! -grin-
Which means I need to read HMC since I've only seen the film.

Nausicaä is one of my all time favorites along with Akira, Origin: Spirits of the Past, Appleseed Saga: Ex Machina, Ghost in the Shell, Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, (you can see I tend towards Sci-Fi), Steamboy was fun too.

Don't even get started on individual episodes or manga!

message 25: by Qylie (new)

Qylie LOL this is great timing - we watched Appleseed Ex Machina last night!! Awesome!

Has anyone watched last exile? I think that might be my favorite series right now.

message 26: by Brett (new)

Brett I have Last Exile on my 'To Be Watched' list but that list is getting as long as my To Be Read list! Especially the Anime part.

message 27: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu I wish someone nominated A Spell for Chameleon rather than On a Pale Horse, just because it is his most famous work to date.

message 28: by ♥Xeni♥ (new)

♥Xeni♥ K, so it seems like a lot of people want to read Howl's Moving Castle! Amazing!

I am definitely looking forward to more clarity from the book. The movie left me wondering "whats going on??" a lot of the time... and although I've probably watched it 10 or 12 times by now (my little sister just adores forcing me to sit through anime) it's still confusing. At least now, next time she wants me to watch something, I can tell her something new!

On another note: I really really loathe that the poll results are hidden. I understand why you want to do this... but this group has a very large tendency for people to change their votes base on what the front runners are. The merits of that can be discussed for hours, no doubt, but in the long run it's been working for this group, so why change now?

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides Anyone else think Elric is too whiny and angsty? I've tried to read various Moorcock stories featuring Elric and ... I just can't get past that.

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides Boradicus wrote: Whining, afterall is complaining about something you cannot change instead of finding something positive to focus on!!!

I chose to focus on the positive by reading stories I felt were enjoyable. :)

message 31: by Kim (new)

Kim Yay The Summer Tree won :) I already have that one

message 32: by Kim (new)

Kim Boradicus wrote: "The Summer Tree was cool if it is the book I am thinking of... is that the one about a tapestry or something????"

The Summer Tree is book 1 of the Fionavar Tapestry trilogy. I've been meaning to read it since we did The Lions of al-Rassan.

message 33: by ♥Xeni♥ (new)

♥Xeni♥ So... you're saying it looks promising, Kim?

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides Wow, The Summer Tree won? Yay! I don't think something I want to re-read has ever won just as I wanted to re-read it. :)

message 35: by Andre (new)

Andre Snail in Danger (Sid) wrote: "Wow, The Summer Tree won? Yay! I don't think something I want to re-read has ever won just as I wanted to re-read it. :)"

Me too! Can't wait to read it together. I think it will generate some interesting discussion.

message 36: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Snail in Danger, Kim and Andre... Anyone interested in leading the discussion? Let me know :). You all seem very excited for it that I think you'd be best suited for it.

message 37: by Andre (new)

Andre I've never led a discussion before, but if I were to do so for any book, The Summer Tree would be good since I've already read it and know the themes.

message 38: by Cindy (new)

Cindy I can help you along. The book is actually on reserve at the library. I just figured it would be better with someone who has fully read it and seemed excited for it :).

message 39: by Cindy (new)

Cindy I'm pretty lax with the book discussion as I think anyone who really wants to post a discussion topic should be able to but having a "leader" is nice when the discussion lags or needs a little kick in the pants.

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides Yay, Andre, for volunteering! It's been so long ago that I read the trilogy that I remember what happened, but how is a little patchy, if you know what I mean.

message 41: by Andre (new)

Andre Snail in Danger (Sid) wrote: "Yay, Andre, for volunteering! It's been so long ago that I read the trilogy that I remember what happened, but how is a little patchy, if you know what I mean."

Yes, I'm looking forward to revisiting the details myself.

message 42: by Cindy (new)

Cindy The reason I did not change the poll is because we are trying out different polls and styles to see what fits. Goodreads is making a lot of changes and it's hard to keep up so we're trying something new. I tried the poll on both a computer and a mobile phone and it worked fine. It was something new to try, it obviously did not work out.

As for Howl's Moving Castle being nominated, it was nominated after all 7 books. The rules state that the first 7 were put up.

message 43: by ♥Xeni♥ (new)

♥Xeni♥ Yeah, I realize that, Cindy, about HMC. But some of us are still interested in reading it this month together... so I hope you don't feel too overrun by that!

message 44: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught Doesn't that happen every month now? Bypassing the poll process and picking up a rogue read, that is. Seems like it's become the group norm.

message 45: by ♥Xeni♥ (new)

♥Xeni♥ Mhh... I do rather push for it. So it's only become the norm because I really want to read certain books and I make other people read with me!

message 46: by Andre (new)

Andre Yeah, it's all Xeni's fault. :) Not that I mind...

message 47: by ♥Xeni♥ (new)

♥Xeni♥ So, Andre, Howl's Moving Castle, then? :D

message 48: by Andre (new)

Andre ♥Xeni♥ wrote: "So, Andre, Howl's Moving Castle, then? :D"

Yep. It's on my bedside table. :) Do we need a thread in the general discussion area?

message 49: by ♥Xeni♥ (last edited May 30, 2011 10:07AM) (new)

♥Xeni♥ We need a thread in the side reads area... whereever that might be!

Edit: Looks like that's Members Discussions. Consider it made!

message 50: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Nope I don't feel overrun :). I was explaining here due to the number of letters I got complaining that it was supposed to be in the poll. Obviously not you Xeni :) but others.

I feel if the group wants to discuss a book by all means let them. There are millions of books so why limit yourself to reading something you don't want? The whole point of the group in my opinion is to discover books and discuss them. Who's to say it has to be the main group read?
