Hi Jacob,
Well...that's a good question.
So, the intention was to take a couple of weeks when the book came out (summer of 2015) and bang out a quick little short--something in the 5000 word rang. It ended up taking about six weeks, the story was north of twenty thousand words, and everybody who's read it agrees that if I'm dumb enough to put it out, I'll retroactively ruin the love for Mount Char.
"It's way too long and it also sucks," seems to be the consensus. Ouch.
You're not the first person who's asked, and I think about this quite a bit. I think the problem was that the story I was trying to write focused on Carolyn. Her arc was largely done at the end of Library. That's also the reason why I'm hedging about whether there will be a full-on sequel to the novel.
Kind of what I'm thinking now is that I'll go back and approach it from the point of view of one of the librarians who got less page time. We'll see how that goes.
Meantime, I'm working on an unrelated story. Sorry I don't have more for you.

Thanks so much for "The Library at Mount Char". Your bio reminded me so much of a friend of mine living in the US (I'm in New Zealand), that I took a photo off the back cover and sent it to him. He agreed. I would love to know your writing method. Do you just set aside time and write, or do you have techniques to trick yourself into sitting down? Also, how long had you been working on the novel before publication?
