Goodreads asked Ryan W. Mueller:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Ryan W. Mueller Read a lot. When I started out as a writer, I didn't read much, and it showed in my writing. My greatest improvement as a writer came once I started reading voraciously. Reading gave me a feel for the flow of good writing, for the nuances of character development and the structure of a good plot.

It also gave me the confidence that I could do this too. The more I read, the more I wanted to contribute my own stories that readers could enjoy just as much.

Reading is also great for generating ideas. You might decide you want to improve on something that disappointed you in a book. Or you might just gather bits and pieces from everything you read and combine them to make your own unique world, story, and characters.
