Goodreads asked Sarah Forgrave:

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Sarah Forgrave It depends on the type of project I'm working on. If I have an outline but I'm stuck on the details, I revisit the outline and the underlying research that supports it. Sometimes that will get me unstuck. Other times, I find that I need to jump to a different section of the book altogether and work on it for a while before I come back to the trouble spot.

If I'm stuck because of a missing element -- whether it's a hole in my research or an analogy that would drive the point home -- I give myself permission to step away and do some hunting. Oftentimes additional stories or sources of data will bring those "aha" moments I need to keep writing.
