Andrew Watts Samuel, I got a lot of my inspiration on characters from reading news clippings about actual espionage events. I tried to imagine what type of person might be involved, and what their motivations might be. At the time when I first wrote about Lena, my wife and I had three children under five years of age. We were both under a lot of pressure. So I probably also got inspiration regarding my female villain from my wife's treatment of me at the time.
