Seriously, don't do it. It's a hassle and nobody pays you unless you strike it super lucky or your name is JK Rowling. If you really *can't* not do it, then learn everything you can, start a blog to practice your voice and develop a very, very thick skin because all kinds of people will say all kinds of useful-hard and unkind-hard things about your work. And your feelings will probably get hurt.
