Goodreads asked Emily Gray Tedrowe:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Emily Gray Tedrowe Last night I finished a wonderful biography of Charles Dickens (by the master biographer Claire Tomalin), and while reading an account of one of his regular days -- working on Edwin Drood (his last, unfinished novel) I was struck by the fact that I get to do what the greatest writers in history have always done: sit down to a piece of paper and make up stories and characters. Something about that connection to the writers I have loved my whole life makes this work not just worthy to me, but special.
