I recently read Girl of the Southern Sea and attended your Freeman Book Award presentation and I'm currently reading Music for Tigers for an author study I'm doing on you for my international children's literature class. In answer to your question, I would have to say the single most important message I hope young people take away from my books is a sense of their own empowerment, along with empathy for others. All of my books feature the themes of self-empowerment, self-acceptance, friendships, and celebrating differences - those traits seem hardwired in my stories!

Hi, Have you read either book by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley - The War that Saved my Life or The War I Finally Won ? I read the first title a couple of years ago, and just started reading the second this past Sunday. Young girl, Ada, has the same condition that Alba suffered from. Both books are set in England during WWII when children were evacuated from London during the bombing. Interesting connection.
