Referencing the title to my current book, The Pine Barrens Stratagem, I would have to say the existence of the New Jersey Devil. The lore has been around for a couple hundred years and those stories were used to scare the heck out of me a summer camper in those same woods. The story could be about the folklore, or maybe that a criminal group is using the legend to hid, or keep people away, from where they're doing business.
