Goodreads asked Victoria Costello:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Victoria Costello This is an autobiographical novel, inspired by my Irish grandparents’ coming to America at the turn of the last century and the coming of age of my eldest son. He was an orchid child, neurodivergent being another way to describe his differences. I imagine many of you can relate to this relatively new, liberating identity.

I shared these bits of my family story in a memoir, titled A Lethal Inheritance. In the decade since that book came out, I decided to fill in parts that I didn't know by asking the simple question... what if?

What if my grandfather also had 'the gift?' As the Irish Rebellion of 1920 broke out, what if his ability to see what others didn't was misconstrued as collaboration with the British, forcing his and my grandmother's emigration to New York City. Then, as I followed three generations forward, it only seemed right to have their fictional descendants return to Ireland to finish the leftover family business. Perhaps even heal the family wound that had festered over a century.
