I once found a letter sent to my mother that revealed (in passing) that a young woman had been adopted, though it was clear from the context that the young woman herself, and those around her, probably did NOT know. This was a long time ago, but it struck me at the time that it could be the sort of secret one could come across by chance, going through someone's letters after their death.
